Note that this says nothing about the overall suicide rate, just the firearm suicide rate. It doesn't back the idea that reducing guns reduces suicide.
Agreed - but as I pointed out often they use the most "at hand" method and if it is pills - they stand a chance. I have looked after a few failed suicides from guns - see most people point the gun at the temple then last minute jerk it forward - but not enough to miss the eyes.......... Same as when they point it up under the chin - it either exits through the nose taking out the middle of the face or hits the base of the skull, and well, you do not want to know but death in that case is a blessing
Thee years ago an old terminally ill friend of mine shot himself. I suppose he`s amongst those statistics somewhere as a suicide, we call it euthanasia.
No , but this does. http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/Lookup/by Subject/1370.0~2010~Chapter~Suicide (4.5.4) Total suicides have also been trending down significantly since 1997. The inference is unmistakable.
The inference is obvious, there has been a general downward trend in the suicide rate during this period, not associated with firearm laws at all.
The problem is when parents don't bother to lock up their guns and little Johnny gets his hand on it, takes it to school and shoots his teacher. Then the conservatives jump up and down and blame everyone and everything but the gun and the pathetic parents.
I just get a broken link. Even so, suicide rates have been dropping in the US since the '90s as well (at least until the market collapse), but gun ownership is higher than ever. http://www.suicide.org/suicide-statistics.html#death-rates Thus gun ownership can't be the reason for the reduction in suicides.
Not from what I've seen. Still that is no less reasonable than liberals blaming legal gun ownership when a criminal uses a stolen gun in a crime.
Okay then - given that most of the rest of the world think you are stark raving gun mad I will concede that some have suggested you would be better off without guns - but how close is that to actually happening? One of the American myths surrounding guns is that they will at any second be forcibly taken from their "cold dead hands" Truth is that hyperbole of the NRA was inspired advertising and has, over the years sold millions of additional armaments for their sponsors Truth is we can talk all we want about how twonkerish your myths are but none of us are really interested in visiting your country for the sole purpose of removing said guns Personally I believe that you can spend all you want on what ever arms you need to satisfy your testosterone fuelled longings but I do object the spread of inane American gun myths
The CDC's WISQAR database ( http://webappa.cdc.gov/sasweb/ncipc/mortrate10_sy.html ) has all the information you would need. The figures that I've researched in it resemble the NRA's figures. Accidental gun death is quickly becoming an extremely rare event.
He was posting suicide rates (i.e. completed suicide) not attempted suicide rates. Japan's suicide rate is higher than America's combined murder and suicide rate, for example, despite Japan's almost complete gun control.
And it doesn't happen often. There was a period of time that was happening quite a bit, but I think there was something historical going on then. If you lok at the more recent mass murders, such as the Virginia Tech killer, you will find that he was in high school at the same time as Colombine. There was something sociopathic about that group of kids.
Just another example of a spurious relationship. We know that there are multiple variables impacting on suicide rates. We also know that gun control is one of them!
How exactly do you blame a gun?...and what examples do you have of conservatives not blaming negligent parents?
Wrong,as usual......better mental health screenings and education brought down the suicide rate...gun control isn't going to stop a suicide, they'll just find another way
What you call hyperbole is a cold ,hard fact.....I WILL NOT give up my firearms...they will be long hidden before the brownshirts you let run your country come to take them....and I will DIE before I give them up And I don't think you will be visiting here with the sole purpose of taking my guns, that's inane, besides, we have enough here trying to do that, so you can stay home. I'm long past the age where I let mypenis do most of my thinking for me, so nothing in my life is 'testosterone fueled', and did you ever stop to think the 'myth'is spreading because people want it?
At least try and respond to the comment quoted! Does everyone agree that there are multiple variables impacting on suicide rates? Obviously! Does the evidence find that gun control is one of them? Yep!
Can you direct me to evidence that supports your theory that a person`s political leanings have any effect on their concern for their children`s safety? Does this theory of parential neglect extend to other safety risks, such as fire risk, road safety, suffocation, drowning, nutrition, sharp objects, risk of falls? Or does this theory only apply to firearms? Any specific caliber? Or any specific action? Or is it all types of firearms that conservatives have no objection to accessability by children? Please respond with some supporting evidence.
Uncle Meat is in fact an Aunt. Am I allowed to say that? Not being a student of PC etiguette, I`m unsure of how PC control works. I`ve been spoiled for PC by living in the real world too long. In my world, firearms are inert objects, they don`t spontainously escape from their confines & massacre anyone. The same applies to other risks in life, like traffic hazards, risk of electrocution, eating mud etc. FYI, certain posters on this forum are prone to tantrums an complaints of personal abuse over the slightest little thing. I was only recently, shattered, devastated and deeply hurt by a censorship of one of my posts that I thought to be quite amiable, friendly in fact. All I did was to suggest that Aunty Meat head for the library for research & I was struck down by the sooky stick. Terribly traumatic, and downright sad for me, it was. I wonder if I could get some comfort counseling from the lefty Govt to help me over this deeply hurtfull experience?
You have dogma, I have empirical evidence. It would be nonsensical to deny that the evidence finds that gun control has significant gun control effects. Its matter of fact.
Your irrational fears have gotten the better of you, Friend. You're substituting cussing, name-calling and false accusations (all in one short sentence) for logic and reason. You can probably do better than this, I don't know.
