[h=1]U.S. Unemployment Drops in May, to a New Unadjusted Low[/h][h=2]Underemployed are now more hopeful that they will find work in the next 30 days[/h] http://www.gallup.com/poll/155000/Unemployment-Drops-May-New-Unadjusted-Low.aspx Let it be said that the Gallup estimate is enthusiastically endorsed by forum right-wingers, who dismiss government estimates. http://www.politicalforum.com/current-events/175054-gallup-unemployment-hitting-10-3-february.html http://www.politicalforum.com/current-events/233243-unemployment-spike-coming-gallup-rises-9-a.html Actually, their preferred estimate is whatever shows weaker employment numbers. Carry on.
I noticed Gallup had dropped to 8.0% for the first time too but was going to wait till it went below 8% before noting it. It's a small bright spot on an otherwise gloomy day on the jobs front (except for those who are invested in failure for political purposes who can hardly contain their glee). The BLS survey is conducted mid-month, at which time Gallup was unemployment figures in the 8.2-8.3% range. Hopefully this late month drop Gallup reports portends the zenith of a slow patch. We shall see.
And continuing the trend since the Great Recession, from the BLS, the number of government jobs fell, which offset greater job gains in the private sector. Total private sector gains were 800K, but that number is not seasonally adjusted. Republicans do appear to be rather gleeful today. Party first. Country second.
Also notable is how standards for success change. Bush presided over a net loss in private sector employment, over an astounding 8 years, about 650,000 jobs lost. Jan. 2001: 111,631,000 Jan. 2009: 110,985,000 After dealing with the effects of the Great Recession, private sector employment has rebounded nicely in just 2-3 years. Jan, 2010: 106,800,000 May 2012: 111,040,000 About 4 million gained. Government employment is where the Bushies excelled. Nearly 1.7 million more were employed. Jan. 2001: 20,835,000 Jan. 2009: 22,576,000 Government employment has dropped since then. Jan. 2010: 22,479,000 May 2012: 21,969,000 http://www.bls.gov/webapps/legacy/cesbtab1.htm
They sat by helplessly as their party nominated what core elements of their party call a "socialist" (the rest of us see as a dumb wealthy elite), knowing that was their best chance at the White House. But maybe what Republicans are really happy about is the drop in government employment and rise in private sector jobs. That would be consistent with actual conservative principles, wouldn't it?
Maybe. Maybe what they are really happy about is that economy isn't growing as strong as it had been, and they know full well that a weaker economy improves their chances in November.
Yes Yes.... Ignore reality, statistics, facts, and common sense... Obama is super awesome, aint that right leftys?
YOu were the one calling 133,000 jobs in a month at the same time new jobless claims were 383,000 in ONE WEEK, an "increase in jobs:, weren't you?
Gallup and the BLS often differ in terms of unemployment trends. I tend to calculate my own unemployment rates. That way, I absolutely know for myself how the labor market is doing.
There are two Unemployment Numbers put out by the government but the public does not get to hear about the U6 number. The public number mentioned here is called the U3 number. It counts just the people who come in for their checks. U6 counts the people who no longer get a check but are still unemployed. That number shows @ 20% unemployment, a very dangerous size since communists beginning gaining momentum for an economic take over with large rallies and big massive turn outs clamoring for any kind if new deal. Both Republicans and Democrats have much to lose if the momentum grows as it did in Venezuela. The good news is that 80 million unkilled laborers are working, but at a min wage which should have been raised much higher than the present $7/hr. The solution to unemployment is to increase Consumer Spending. That raises Demand and the jobs open up in order to produce the Supply side.
Here are the U6 numbers for the current year: Jan 15.1, Feb 14.9, Mar 14.5, Apr 14.5, May 14.8 Source: http://portalseven.com/employment/unemployment_rate.jsp In my opinion, our elected representatives should be providing for the common defence and general welfare of the United States. It is specifically enumerated, after all. What objection can there be to actually solving poverty through unemployment compensation instead of merely paying for our Wars on Crime, Drugs, and Poverty for over a generation and not calling them boondoggles and generational forms of theft?
Putting aside the fact that you are totally wrong on multiple levels regarding the BLS U-3 and U-6 designations (and I would be interested to know where you got your ideas from), what does any of this have to do with Gallup's figures?
Is this "8% unemployment" stat the one that they came up with excluding all the people who are unemployed but who gave up looking for work? This article dating from a few weeks ago when things were relatively "good" holds that the real unemployment rate -- which includes "workforce participation" in the algorithm -- is 14.5% - 18%. I tried to choose a reliable news source, and not a blog: http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/capitol/the_real_unemployment_rate_Dz8PweHqsH1MVVwgkK51mI I know your dislike for WND, for instance, and that is quite understandable since they were reporting that the real unemployment rate is 22.5%: http://www.wnd.com/2012/02/real-unemployment-rate-22-5/ Also, it appears that April wasn't as good as first reported, so they revised it (not for the first time): http://www.kansascity.com/2012/06/01/3637294/hiring-plunges-in-may-april-revised.html I do value your opinion about these things because I know that you value accuracy in reported facts, whether they favor Left or Right, and that is admirable. I'm sure it is irritating to both of us that it seems like the "authorities" can't ever seem to get their numbers right, or, they base their numbers on strange criteria (like just leaving out unemployed people who have given up even trying to find work in this peculiar "recovery" that Obama's got going)....
I believe that the electorate of the United States deserves better than merely political passions of the moment.
What objection can there to actually solving official poverty instead of merely paying for a war on poverty for over a generation. Why should the People be held "hostage" to elected representatives who are only interested in denying and disparaging individual liberty?
Meanwhile the ACTUAL NUMBERS show unemployment GOING UP, to 8.2%. 383,000 NEW jobless claims just last week. Duh....
Would an unemployment rate be a political issue, instead of merely an economic phenomena, if persons could apply for unemployment compensation in full compliance with the concept and legal doctrine of employment at will?
