You needn't snide it up. It doesn't add to the argument and it certainly doesn't describe me. I don't believe in shooting strangers or in being stupid about self-protection. If someone is trying to rape me then I can also assume they may wish to take my life. Look at the statistics on it.

Having had bad things happen to me, I choose not to have bad things happen to me again. Now, you think this is worth derision...break it out.

    Explain why.

Why do you think a female should not fight back? Why would you let yourself be raped?

    I could tell.

Why don't you move to a less violent area? I know that sounds condescending, simplistic and perhaps impossible financially, but it works.

You should also park your car facing out and ready to drive off. Keep your keys and all your real valuables in your pocket in case your bag is stolen. Keep your keys in your hand with the keys between your fingers to use as a chib (Scottish word for weapon) if absolutely necessary. Pretend you know your attacker and are friendly with him (buy you time) etc etc etc.

But the best self defence is to avoid. Don't put yourself in the situation.

If you can it by avoiding parked vehicles, well and good. If you can cross the street and get into a populated area, well and good. If you can be in a safer location, much better.

I used past tense for a reason.

No offense, but I know all of that already. I do walk with my key between my fingers. I also don't walk like a victim, having had 18 years of fighting and violence behind me. I don't walk like someone oblivious to my surroundings. I've also taken kickboxing (for health, but still...)

I live in a quiet neighborhood well patrolled by cop cars. But...I also am prepared for the random encounter. Rapists go where there are women joggers and activity.

I'm asking YOU now since you put a lot of snark and effort into deriding women who aren't lying down and rolling over...

Do you believe that if someone is about to do you physical harm like rape that you should not fight back with lethal force? Do you think a key between the fingers will save you against someone with a knife? What if he has a gun?

What would you do then? Let him rape you?

It described you perfectly. Which part of the comment is inaccurate, based on what you posted?

The statistics I read said a small percentage of women who are raped, are also murdered. More suffer attempted murder.

If you don't want the opinion of others on a topic in an internet forum, don't post.

Why would you think I think a female should not fight back? Perhaps you can point out where I said that...

No- because a would-be rapist would probably come up from behind and acost the woman, and logically in that case she can't get 10 feet away from the guy to pull out the gun in the first place.

Look Viv, your a foreigner who has no clue what it is like for a woman to live in America and to always be weary of the crime that permeates our minority urban settings. What would a woman be afraid of or have a need for a weapon in merry ole Scotland? Life's experiences for this particular issue will always win out or take precedence in a debate.

Don't have a problem with what you posted, just that you're taking a serious topic where women have to feel their way through and are putting up stop signs to women who don't want to roll over. I already know my position, you're attempting to deride women who don't want to be life-long victims, requiring men to protect them.

Just attempted murder...nothing to worry about. LOL. Okay.

Where's your opinion? I'm trying to get it out of you and you're not putting it out there. I've asked several times.

Then say it, don't dance around it.

I'm asking you to say something that is in reference to the subject. How would you and your key fight back against a rapist? Have you ever been rushed by someone about to do you physical harm? Do you know that feel of adrenalin when you didn't expect to see someone coming at you? Have you ever had to fight someone off before?

We are physically weaker, unfortunately. We need someone to equalize the situation.

If someone is trying to rape you and maybe kill you or give you a deadly STD with the rape, maybe cut you while they're doing it...you don't want to have that option of lethal force...or do you?

What is your opinion on the use of a gun to self-protect. I do want to know.

Show us where most rapes end in murder and while you're at it, some stats that prove an armed woman would not get raped, bub.

Not always, so why not be prepared for the time where you have the option to leave the situation without being raped?

Are we to assume you no longer live in a high risk area, but continue to act in a way which is inappropriate to your current circumstances?

    ...but didn't mention it.

Do you jog with a gun?

...some like myself, of course, who would never dream of "lying down and rolling over"...do go on...

If he has a gun, 85% chance he is not going to shoot at you and if he does, his chances of hitting you are even less.

The keys and all other examples of possible self defence posted, show any number of things you might do to try to defend yourself in a situation like that, but the point is the most effective self defence (including carrying a gun) is by far...avoidance.

More effective than guns, knives, keys, jujitsu or any other imaginary friend.

As to what I would do, everything at my disposal.

I didn't say that most rapes ended in murder. Reading comprehension helps. And so does logic--you are less likely to end up dead if you have equalizing force than if you don't.

Libhater, I lived in US in my most sociable and formative years and was for a time engaged to a US citizen. My family lived and worked in US for generations and some of them still live there. Now go and finish reading your Stormfront Weekly.

Edit] Or go and read the stats on Scottish knife crime.

I will not use the divisive political terms, but people in the inner cities fear guns more because that is where most filth hangs around.

I don't believe that I did make that statement. I believe that I am speaking of what women have a right to do.

Why would I need to? I'm speaking about a general topic and what people have a right to do...defend themselves.

I believe I said that those locations are prime. If I'm running, I'm going to keep on. Fight or flight. I'll try the flight first.

Link to the 85% chance that he's not going to shoot you. As for guns being aimed...we all know from experience, zig zag and if you're in the house during a drive by get low and behind stuff.

Have I said otherwise? I don't think I ever once suggested to go looking for trouble. I even said to avoid parked cars, bushes, etc.

Don't think anyone ever said it was. I'd much rather not be in that situation than narrowly escape it.

So, you would use lethal force and accept that lethal force is acceptable to save your own life? Good to know. I agree with you.

In inner cities most people have a gun in the glove compartment and a baseball bat in the back seat.

I'll bet those 7 women raped at some youth camp just lately wish they had some of those furiously fast guns.

It's been over 4 years since I left the North Phily ghetto, but I was more under assumption that they mostly have fear in their hearts and a concern on how to get the next welfare check?

You're entirely wrong. This is the final frontier in liberating women. Until women are physically capable of self defence, we will always be viewed as prey. And no matter how scrupulous males publicly pretend to be, we know what they do in their spare time online and it doesn't seem to concern them that 73% of women involved in the sex industry are coerced and they are providing a market for that.

Still, that is well off topic.

But self defence is a key issue in progressing equality for women. It should be addressed seriously by those pursuing a feminist agenda. It is our Achilles heel.

However, if a person male or female is approached by a gun-wielding attacker, gender is irrelevant.

    If you're wrong, you're wrong.

You can trust me to decide what to post.

    As it happens, many times.

A gun does not equalize the situation in most cases.

If you haven't grasped that yet, what is the point...

I don't defend points I haven't made and there is a fair discussion currently ongoing in Feedback about whether it is ethical to misquote.

I did not mention lethal force.

Anything at my disposal will vary according to circumstances. But you can trust me not to walk in your scary neighbourhood after dark and expect not to be interfered with. You can probably trust most people with a brain to take reasonable care not to be in that situation, as the danger there is predictable.

    True, true.

    Why?

    I concur.

Absolutely. Gun wielding defenders also make gender irrelevant.

Then you know what that feels like. I've beaten someone who jumped me with pop bottle as a teen until people had to pull me off. I thank God he was on drugs and unable to comprehend how to defend himself. I completely lost myself in fear. It's surreal and it made me realize that you can put clothes on us, put us in houses, but deep down...we're still bipedal apex predators.

Cite some statistics where guns don't equalize the situation. A man holds a gun on you and says: Come with me. Another man just tells you: Come with me. Which one are you more likely to listen to (although you should run from both)?

    People fear guns.

Okay, then I'll make the assumption and you can tell me if I'm wrong. You don't think women should have the right to have a gun to defend themselves and should be left with the following options: run, avoid, or use a key.

I would not want anyone to live in my former scary neighborhood at all. I wish they would raze the entire (*)(*)(*)(*)ing city and start over. But...how do you get poor people into the suburbs?

I got out by going to good schools and getting advanced degrees. Not everyone had my ability to do this.

Not liberal or conservative. But support the right to bare arms. I agree that if a woman is armed with a gun it does reduce the chances of rape or worse. I will not stand in the way of a woman who wants to protect herself. More power to her.
