RALEIGH, N.C. The North Carolina House has approved a bill mandating background checks for welfare recipients. The bill that passed 106-6 Thursday requires all social services employees to perform background checks to bar applicants and recipients with outstanding warrants or other active violations from welfare and food stamp programs. Employees would have to report them to law enforcement. Bill sponsor Rep. Dean Arp, a Republican from Monroe, noted the federal government already prohibits giving public assistance to fleeing felons and others with active violations. Arp appeased many opponents after providing assurances that county offices won't shoulder additional costs. Some Democrats previously expressed concern about creating new burdens for social services employees and the perception that the bill unfairly singles out poor people for distrust. The bill now heads to the Senate. As far as I know, a welfare check going to a person with outstanding parking tickets to feed their kids never blew brain matter out of the side of another persons head.
Alright cool, in order to gain welfare, you need to pee in a cup, pass a background check, and qualify for federal aide. However it is your god given right to be able to buy bulk amount of ammo with a Valid Email address.
That's a big step in the right direction. An update to that bill should require that any background check that otherwise passes muster, but shows a drug/alcohol related incident, requires that the welfare candidate voluntarily undergo periodic and/or random drug screening to maintain eligibility. Refusal to volunteer for screening is just cause to deny benefits. Also, the "benefits" should be in the form of a loan that is repayable when the recipient gets a jobs. They are, after all, the ones who actually have something to "give back" to the community, aren't they? - - - Updated - - - Wow. You're absolutely right on everything you just said. Except for the fact that people pay for ammunition with credit cards and such, not e-mail addresses.
Yeah, let's spend even MORE money to try to save the small miserable amounts we give in welfare. And spend MORE money yet for everyone who ever has had a beer. Will the Right ever get a clue? Much of welfare IS a "loan"! And if you get on social security disability, or win the lottery, or Unclle Bob leaves yo a barrel of money, the recipients are obligated to pay the welfare BACK! And MANY of the families on welfare have a father that abandoned them, and when the state tracks him down, they take the money, put it in the state coffers, and the wife and children STILL keep showing up on the welfare roles. Geez, why doesn't ANYONE on the Right bother to learn ANYTHING about welfare or FEMA, or any other program before they blow off their fat mouths screaming about it! Or better yet, go help some old or disabled or sick person try to get all these "free and easy cushy benefits", and get to see just how little they get and how hard it is to survive while dealing with the problems that go you there in the first place! MANY people on welfare CAN'T drive or ride a bus because they are disabled or mentally deficient or simply too old or sick. If you want drug tests, a case worker will spend ALL of heir time trying to get these asinine bureaucratic requirements handled.
As I've always said, I am perfectly fine with drug tests for welfare recipients if they have a history of drug abuse, or have a criminal record with drug-related offenses... Otherwise, why is this necessary?
