My town is having major elections this year. Local law says that you must be a natural born US citizen in order to run for any city office here. One of the candidates, an independent, was born in Iraq during Desert Storm, to a female soldier. The local Republicans are claiming that he is not allowed to run, but he is claiming that the children of US soldiers born while their parents are on active duty outside of the US are considered natural citizens. He claims that soldiers are included in the laws that give natural citizenship to the children of US diplomats born while their parents are carrying out offical government work overseas. The Republicans are claiming that soldiers are not, and should not be, included. What do you think?
He's right, these so called Republicans are wrong and I never heard of a Republican who would hold such a belief. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural-born-citizen_clause It is any child of an American citizen not just soldiers.
actually, the Naturalzation act of 1795 replaced the one from 1790, making it void. And it did not give the children of citizens born outside the US automatical natural citizenship. They do get citizenship, but they are considered born on foreign soil. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naturalization_Act_of_1795
Your link; I bet there was another one after this one. I don't see it though I do see this; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural-born-citizen_clause
What I think is that there is something not right with that story. Females I have known who became pregnant were all shipped stateside just about as quickly as they could pack and a seat could be found. I have trouble believing this person would be the child of an active duty female US soldier serving in a war zone.
Something definitely does not compute. A female in a third trimester would likely not have been allowed inside Iraq during Desert Storm, the only American units that went into Iraq for Desert Storm were active combat units and their support elements, and I doubt the support elements would still have allowed a pregnant woman to go that close to "Indian country". No matter where a child is born, if at least one parent is an American Citizen, the child is an American citizen as well. Same rationale I used to say that even if Barack Obama was born overseas, he was still a natural-born citizen.
such a simple legal issue. If its a question at all, then its merely obfuscation. And a point for the iraqi born american to expose the dishonest racist bs of his/her opposition.
If John McCain could run for president, there is no reason that this candidate couldn't run for office.
That is BS. People born to soldiers fighting for our country are American from day one no matter where they are born or stationed.
That is not necessarily true. If both parents were US citizens and 1 resided in the US, then yes. Otherwise it gets a little more tricky having to do with when the anchor parent lived in the US and for how long.
The new Obama Rule of Law can be applied in some special instances. For example, President Obama was born in Kenya of native Kenyan parents. His legal mother (not biological mother) is a white woman and U.S. citizen. That is enough to make Obama a U.S. citizen. The Obama Rule of Law should be applied to foreigners with charismatic, bubbly, cute, witty personalities whom everyone loves. If the mayoral candidate in question is loved by the people, he should be allowed to run for office, citizen or not. Thank you
Something weird about someone THAT pregnant being stationed in Iraq during a war. How the heck does that happen?
there are citizens other than naturalized and natural born? where are these other classes in the Constitution?
We didn't station troops in Iraq during Desert Storm. The only units that went in were a part of the "Hail Mary" plan devised by the Coalition leadership that caught the Iraqis with their pants down and their collective Johnson in their hand. I still stand by the assertion that a female who was pregnant would have been allowed anywhere within range of the Iraqi Scuds.
I don't get it. What kind of facilities does a base in Iraq have for babies anyhow? And what kind of mother wouldn't request to go home before she's on the no-fly list? The whole thing stinks.
Let me state it again. There was no, as in Zero, nada, zilch, zippo, nein, naught, base for American or other Coalition troops in Iraq during Desert Storm. Iraq was ENEMY TERRITORY during the First Gulf War. Considering that women were precluded from combat roles, she was likely NOT even near the front lines, and certainly NOT attached to a unit that was going anywhere near the front lines. I am not current on military medicine, but many doctors are still trained in rudimentary obstetrics, as far as I know, even some veterinary school students are taught basic human medical techniques, such as obstetrics and basic first aid.
