8yr old 'Grand Theft Auto IV' Player Shoots 90yr old Woman in the Head

I am not sure about my brain functions any more, but I am old enough to remember when Donald Duck cartoons were blamed for child violence, I am old enough to remember when TV was blamed for child violence. I am old enough to remember when heavy metal music was blamed for child violence. I am old enough to remember when D&D games were blamed for child violence.

I am also old enough to have raised enough kids to know 8 year olds dont have the mental capacity to distinguish cause and effect of firing a bullet into a human body.

 

So we should ban them right?

 

Isn't safe weapon storage dictated by state laws? If this gun owner didn't do anything illegal, then legislators in that state are broken. Any gun I ever bought came with a trigger lock and instructions on safe storage.

We might consider rating the games and making them illegal to play without an adult. Why would violent video games be any different than hardcore porn?

 

Games are rated. And games are protected speech. And no there should no laws making it illegal to play without an adult. Nothing needs to be done except better parenting. And its not illegal for children to watch porn.

 

I don't disagree that there is a parenting issue. But I do think NC-17 and XXX means nobody under 17 is allowed (movies). I don't know how the game rating system works though.

 

The MPAA is a voluntary organization that movie studios use. There is no law mandating the MPAA and it is not a government organization. The same goes for the ESRB.

 

You'd think you know me by now. Of course I am not justifying that idiot gun owner's actions. This gun owner needs to do hard time. I'm saying if the gun owner didn't commit a felony, then the politicians are broken. Because what kind of effed up politician thinks an unlocked gun should be available to children or to retarded people? I may own more guns than anyone on this site and may be one of the few with a federal firearms license and a carry permit; but I have common sense and know guns need to be protected from misuse.

 

Do you somehow think that the claim was illegitimate simply because it was obviously LESS of an influence? Are you incapable of distinguishing degrees of said influence?

And it still is - and it is escalating. So? It's you progressives that continue to push the envelope, and continue to desensitize our children.

And? No one is claiming that this is a new problem. I, for one, believe that this problem is ongoing, and escalating.

Then you have been around desensitized and stupid 8 year olds, because my children at 8 years old would never have dreamed of grabbing a gun and pulling a trigger, because the consequences were well known to them.

The ability to AIM a firearm signifies the ability to discern consequence. Try to deny that.

 

I am a Libertarian and I cringe at yet more laws; but these games really send the wrong message to impressionable children. If people are too damn stupid to be good parents; something has to be done to protect the innocents like that little old lady that took a bullet and died. And those gangsta thugs in the black sub culture - you don't think they lose touch with right and wrong because of these games like grand theft auto? We have a joke up here in Upstate NY. What do you call it when you see a black male next to a horse and carriage? Grand Theft Amish.

There should be a parent test. If a parent is too stupid to raise a kid they should be neutered before they get a chance to further eff up America with broken children.

Good question. What can be done? Maybe some laws around those game and movie ratings? I don't know the solution but I clearly know there is a problem. There is a lot of violence in America, especially among blacks. And I suspect if someone doesn't come up with a fix this country is going to be in deep trouble.

 

Some of us can address one aspect of this issue without ignoring others, or assuming that such irresponsibilities do not exist.

What sort of laws? I suppose you mean censorship. And just to point out that there is ZERO evidence violent movies or games contribute anything to violence in people.

Censorship is when something is banned. I am just saying kids should be required to be supervised around game and movie violence. Why do you think kids are becoming violent thugs nowadays? Back when I grew up in the 60's we didn't have drive-by shootings even though we had cars and guns. We didn't have poopie pants, bling, mouthfuls of metal teeth (except in one James Bond movie), and black crack dealers standing on street corners. And we were dirt poor so it's not a poverty thing. The Russian Jewish community I grew up in would never tolerate black thugdom. And we lived in what you could easily argue was a ghetto. Run down tiny apartments, everyone dirt poor, not enough food to go around, not enough places for everyone to sleep. I grew up in an apartment with my mom, my grandmother, and my uncle and we had three rooms and one bedroom. The whole apartment couldn't have been more than 400 square feet.
