I view tipping in simple terms does the person have an employer OR can they set their own fees for a service - or not?

As I see it the worker has an obligation to fight for the best wage if a wait person wants a tip fight for a normal minimum wage first, then tipping is extra. If you can set a fee for a service as in a self-employed barber charge more for the haircut and don't expect a tip.

Now if your ONLY tipped generally this falls into bathroom attendants, Buskers, those offering a service like well washing a window of a car for you or something then tipping is fine.

I for one though will usually leave a tip even to the first group usually 10% for good service to be nice.

You are free to tip fast food employees - why so stingy if you think they deserve more, pay them more. Why do you always expect others to do what you yourself are unwilling to do?

Then dont eat there and let the people go unemployed.

Wow the left sucks. Tipped industries are a clear case of where you work harder you get more reward, no wonder they want law to even the field, so those that suck, slack and leave other waiters to pull them out of the weeds get the same pay. Lefters!

If the waiters worked for the tip then it would be a none issue. How did my discussion turn into a left right thing? Lol. Although it is about greed at the top levels.

You are so engrained with marxism that you dont even know it when you post it. Waiters make more combined together on the restaurant then the owners.

If that is true then they need to definetly work harder for the tip. Also, I think you haven't read all my posts. Next time before you post on my thread please read all the posts. Thank you in advance.

I never eat in restaurants unless I'm out of town/out of country. If the service is good and the food is served promptly and at the correct temperature, I tip between 15% - 20%. Otherwise, I might simply not leave a tip at all. I don't agonize over it in any event....

Believe it or not, frozen food, right out of a supermarket, is MUCH better than it was even ten years ago. You'd be amazed what you can do to feed yourselves well if you use careful selection and a powerful microwave oven. And the savings? Try eating at home for one year and see how much more money you have!

Sorry, I think expecting a tip is a form of begging - it should not be an integral part of any civilised society. Leaving a tip because you think the service is outstanding is another thing entirely.

The villains of the piece are the restaurant proprietors for not paying a living wage, but the society in general must share some of the blame for supporting such a ridiculous, third-world system.

Having said that, when I was in the USA, I left tips because that is the custom. LOL, I was 14 at the time, and the staff looked pleasantly surprised, even though I left very little (I never ate at posh places though, as I was pretty broke). :)

I got a food dehydrator for Xmas and am hoping to save a lot of cash now that I can actually eat all of my fresh vegetables that I buy before they go bad. Things like berries, strawberries, peppers and even bananas are hard to go through for me before they start to lose their freshness or even mold up in the case of berries. It's just one of the challenges of being a bachelor that lots of fresh foods are sold in family-sized quantities.

I tip generously, because I not an (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*).

Having worked in multiple restaraunts, I can promise you that the staff remembers who tips well and who doesn't. When people are known to tip well, their service is usually better. When someone is know to tip poorly (or not at all), let's just say the kitchen staff is very "careful".

    It pays to tip.

Glad no-one is mentioning the old "gob in the soup" story

Although I do remember the tale of one waiter - who, to get his own back at a group of, unwelcome, diners - balanced part of an oyster between his right nostril and upper lip - as he served them he licked the part oyster off his top lip and ate heartily

Let us just say their meal was not as enjoyable as they thought it was going to be…..

Why tip them at all? If the cheap azz employer doesn't care how much they make...then why should I? They're the company's employees, and if the company doesn't care, then neither do I.

I'm not going to be bullied into tipping 20% just so the spiteful staff don't act like pricks or play pranks on me. It is not my fault your employer doesn't pay you better and if you take it out on me I'll be telling him/her so and probably not coming back - every person you (*)(*)(*)(*) off with your spite loses you money, so.....

Eating out is too expensive nowadays to just throw on a bunch of extra money I didn't need to spend.

Seriously, take it up with the owner. Why no one does this I don't know.

It's not my decision wait and bar staff chose to work in the hospitality industry. Not being paid enough, move on and find another job.

    Easy peasy.

No, Americans are the world's most unpopular tourists because even though they tip they tend to be annoying and religious.

Personally I've never experienced a server who I considered to be rude or arrogant, but then again I don't expect my every whim and fancy to be catered to. And I've certainly never been compelled to tell a server by any means that they are "illiterate trash, worms and peasants unworthy of even the respect of a cockroach." That's a disgusting and arrogant attitude to take toward anyone.

Servers put up with a lot of crap from obnoxious overly critical patrons who are looking for any excuse to avoid tipping or for the simple sake of being a jackass. I'm there for an enjoyable experience, not to nitpick and criticize every half full tea glass or misplaced order. I generally find that if you treat them with respect they will respond in kind.

I hate this "the customer is always right" mentality. You should tip service workers even if they make some mistakes. Service workers get extremely stressed and they will all make mistakes regardless of their levels of dedication to the customer. Businesses generally hire the least workers they can so service workers are usually overstretched. If you get (*)(*)(*)(*)ty service blame the business owner not the worker.

I get the feeling that some customers just want a chance to replicate the employer-employee relationship.

Then don't go to places where they offer service. Stick to McDs. When everyone is paid the same no matter what no one cares about hustling for you and service suffers.

Tips are fine. Just pay them you cheapo or for waste servers time.

Will remember this next time you trot out one of your "people other then me should pay these people more" arguments. Same for you Mr Fraud. Cheap as hell to the people working for you. As a server I always though the customers were who I worked for. The house just covers taxes. You sound like a cheap employer that tries to get the work without paying. Remember that next time you pick on corporations, you are worse then any I have heard you complain about.

This is all BS. I have worked in many restaraunt and only saw this type of thing when a cop who had arrested our cook came in. He had ball sweat on his burger bun, that was the only occasion in all the time working in the restaraunt industry. We just call you a jerk, and when you come back you get the service you paid for last time.

Who isn't tipping? I have made tips when I screwed up orders. Because I didn't argue, the customer was right I took it back the kitchen sent out new and everything worked out. A bible thumper group once left me a fake $50 with a note "but don't be upset, god loves you" printed on it. I told the other staff and the next Sunday they waited for ever for food and drinks before they got the message and left never to come back. My boss laughed and said "(*)(*)(*)(*) them if they for want to pay". Couldn't agree more.
