of their day. But the conservatives of today are the liberals of yesterday.

The funny thing about when people try to rob the GOP of it's accomplishments, like freeing the slaves, is that they do so with a generally ignorant understanding of history. You know why Lincoln in his debates said slavery was wrong? Because it robs a man of "the product of his own labor." Think about that, and you'll see why the GOP is still largely the party of Lincoln. Democrats use to want to rob just blacks of the product of their own labor, now they want to rob nearly everyone of the product of the own labor, more and more and more. When is the last time that you saw a Democrat on the national scale argue against a Republican FOR a tax cut? JFK?

Thanks, Republicans. You led the way for the Democratic party to continue freeing the oppressed black Americans for the next 150 years... and there is still much work to be done.

An incredibly stupid thing to post. You're actually comparing criminals in prison doing hard time to slaves doing hard time? Are you f***ing serious?

No I don't wish to celebrate MLK Day and object to it as a paid holiday or school holiday.
    Why Not Cesar Chevez Day

Oh I know, because Black people have a "special History" of being forcibly taken to America.
I will donate to any charity collecting for Black peoples repatriation to Africa.
Oh, they don't wanna go, they say they are American, then stop acting like YOU Black folk are special.
    No MLK Day.
    No Affirmative Action
    No Job Preference
No City Police giving wide latitude because the mob is Black

    Enough is enough.
It is NOT my fault they chose to remain uneducated and criminal.
It is the fault of a pathological Black culture that idolizes evil doers and disrespects the Middle Class dream.

    Am I a racist, NO!
I am a recovered Liberal, if any liberal can ever be termed "recovered".
And if an Asian or Latino family moved next door I would not give it a second thought.

Which is why the amendment was needed. For a brief moment, we agree on something.

Slaves were not freed in this country until after the Civil War was over and the 13th amendment was ratified.

    Typical Republican historical ignorance.

On January 31, 1865, the House resumed discussion before a standing-room-only crowd in the galleries above the floor. When the vote was taken that day, the Thirteenth Amendment achieved a two-vote margin above the needed two-thirds majority, 119-56. The galleries erupted in boisterous applause, which was then joined by congressman on the House floor. In the final vote, all 86 Republicans had voted in favor of the Thirteenth Amendment, along with 15 Democrats, 14 Unconditional Unionists, and 4 Union men; opposition came from 50 Democrats and 6 Union men.
Although a president’s signature was not required, Lincoln signed the proposed Thirteenth Amendment abolishing slavery in the entire nation and it was sent to the states for ratification. In signing the document, Lincoln had both followed and countered the example of his Democratic predecessor, President James Buchanan, who had signed the previously proposed Thirteenth Amendment (the Corwin Amendment), which had unsuccessfully sought to protect slavery at the onset of the Civil War.

My oh, my. You just can't get it through your head. Liberal, Progressives have always been against freedom and for slavery. Even now the Progressive form of slavery is 99 weeks of unemployment insurance, disability for hang nails, and Food stamps to those that really don't need them. It's called the Democratic Party Plantation.

What do you want to see? A most dangerous vs safest city list? Number of blacks killed before and after the democrats took over the cities in the early 60s?

I'll trump that. I live in a mostly redneck and backward state and we're considered by many the most conservative state in the union. At or near last in many metrics including education and wages. Thank goodness for Mississippi or we'd be in the bottom of even more categories.

That's part of why I think Lincoln is radically overrated as a President. He was really quite tyrannical.

The OP has his argument around the wrong way. The Republicans of the past weren't as they are today - back then the Democrats had decent economic policy. Democratic Presidents like Martin van Buren were about as good as they've come before or since.

Wilson and Roosevelt, a Democrat and a Republican, held nearly identical beliefs. Very little has changed since. Both parties are virtually identical on most issues. Taxation? Maybe a 5% difference. Social issues? Obama has done nothing to facilitate gay marriage, he only came out in favor because Biden dun goofed, both sides hate weed, police search door to door in Boston, Patriot Act reapproved. Foreign policy? Identical regardless of who is in power, perhaps a slight difference in motive behind foreign aggression.

Fanatics of the two parties argue all day over nothing. Over talking points; petty differences. It's like watching Microsoft and Sony fanboys fight it out over which is the "superior" console. It's a completely manufactured discussion.

If you're arguing Democrats versus Republicans as parties, you're probably pretty close to the truth. If the point is conservatives versus progressive, that's an entirely different issue. That's why this argument over which party is which by the formal names is both absurd and pointless. In my previous post, you'll notice I didn't say I live in the most Republican state (although that is also true), merely the most conservative.

Comparing Progressives to Conservatives is no better than comparing utilitarian libertarians to Democrats, in my view. It's comparing apples with oranges. Progressives should be compared to utilitarian libertarians like Milton Friedman or Gary Johnson, that's the closest match. Both prefer to operate within the system, but not within the mainstream.

When it comes to race issues I don't think either of the parties have a decent track record. I think traditional Progressives have an even worse record (people like Wilson, Roosevelt), but modern Progressives aren't too bad, excepting their usual views on affirmative action and hate crimes.

So why did pro-segregationist Strom Thurmond become a Republican?

    Proof please.

Anyway, your efforts to portray Democrats as racially oppressive will fail. Ask any black person on the streets which party has helped them more.

As Republicans keep championing voter IDs in an effort to reduce the black vote, support racist comments from Phil Robertson and others, oppose Affirmative Action, and refer to President Obama as "Hussein", they will continue to lose votes from that huge bloc.

I don't know, and why is this relevant? Why does the right always want to refer to black crime rates?

Violent crime comes from poverty, lack of education, addiction, poor parenting, and a host of other social factors. Democrats are trying to improve living conditions and reduce poverty.

Why did all the other pro equal rights Republicans stay? Want to play the "you name 1 that switched, and I name 10 that stayed" game? Only 3 switched. Republicans didnt leave after they passed the civil rights act, and the Democrats just embraced AA like Grand Cyclops Byrd because it gave him power - the only thing the populist left likes - or they lost out to Republicans later, or a bit of both.

Why are you against equality under the law? WHy do you think it is racist? Please dont dodge.

I hope you realize that if
We give to days republicans the credit for ending slavery
Then we must give to days white southerners the The blame for Fighting to continue slavery and
The Jim crow laws that was prevalent
And of racial discrimination Up until the 1960s
Perpetrated by members of both parties
