I was drinking beer in europe at 16 a number of european countries allow beer at 16 and stronger spirits at 18...so 2 yrs of learning what effect alcohol has on their bodies before allowing them to drive, it also lets them mentally mature...immaturity combined with alcohol and driving is a deadly mixture... My parents allowed me to drink small amounts when I was 13, they never made a fuss over it (it tasted bad)as a result I didnt drink until I was 16 ...I did similar for my kids offering them wine and beer at 12, one got sick on a single beer and never drank again until she was 20...3 are adults and none have drinking issues and will not drive even after a single drink or get in car with someone who has...I also took my girls to Amsterdam for their 1st experience with pot, they're quiet proud of that trip telling their friends "we got wasted in Amsterdam with our dad!"... My last project is my son, he refuses to drink beer but he'll have a vodka cooler with me on a hot day, he's 14 in a few weeks and he's legally allowed to drive if accompanied by an experienced driver, 2 years before he can drive alone on a restricted license at 16...I need to eliminate the fascination of alcohol and pot before that time artives...
it's really more about establishing habits and keeping out of the hands of kids even younger. 18 and 14 y/os socialize somewhat but 21 and 17 y/os not so much.
steady pie does have a US state listed as a location along with Oz. i can understand the confusion. - - - Updated - - - so they should be able to buy a handgun AND get kicked off their parents' health insurance if they're not a student???
they should be able to buy a hand gun after 18... yes I agree (why would they not, they are old enough to enlist in the military?) parenting doesn't end at 18 for all parents, parents are not required to give their children insurance until age 26 if you do not want too... you just have the option too now .
It doesn't matter what age you start drinking at. Alcohol is addictive. And because Germany starts younger allowing their kids to consume alcohol has only created a drinking problem worse than the US at ages 14 to 21. http://www.drugfree.org/join-together/drugs/youth-drinking-worse-in-than
Drinking age is BS My parents enjoy 4 glasses of wine at meals and a shot of Raki at night so i had alcohol since i remember myself, I also got wasted several times in my 13s and 15s without ever getting addicted . If the state wants to protect us from "bad stuff" they should start with consumerism , capitalism & egocentrism ; prohibiting unimportant stuff like booze is nonsense.
They both go hand in hand. The law should not allow anyone under 21 to legally consent to drinking alcohol when numerous studies have found an exceptional increase in the inability for those under 21 to maturely handle alcohol consumption.
The law is far more concerned with what current affairs shows say than studies. The law can do what it likes - parents should responsibly introduce alcohol into their children's lives anyway.
I would be curious to see how old everyone is. From the looks of the poll numbers most I would guess are early 20's or younger.
i wouldnt want either of you to be put in jail, BUT im not opposed to a citation which carries a fine which of course should be heavier on the adult who willingly sold you the alcohol. The only way i would ask anyone to be actually arrested in this case would be the store clerk if they sold alcohol to a 16 year old or something followed by a fine on the parents of the kid trying to buy the product. we have laws for a reason. but on a sort of similar subject, i find it quite stupid that we will allow boys and girls as young as 17 to sign up for the military and be taught to kill people and such, and then be sent off to war to do the deed..........but ill bve damned if they are allowed a shot of tequila!!!!!!!!!!
If you live in the barracks, your buddies will take care of you. As long as you stay put and not cause a scene no one is going to say anything.
thats not the point. point being this country says a teenager is old enough to kill or give his life in a war, but at the same time says beer in a no no.
Same argument back in the early 70's. The drinking age was lowered to 18 in 1974. The under 21's screwed it up for everyone. The military is all volunteer. If drinking is more important then don't join the military until you reach 21.
Listen to what he's saying. Surely the risk from going to war is greater than the risk from alcohol. The reason why old farts are opposed to parental rather than state control of liquor is because they're forcing a value judgement - that going to war is a more noble cause than drinking a beer. But that's a decision for the individual.

If you can consent to go to war, you can consent to drink. The government has no business whatsoever trying to protect individuals from themselves. Also, the drinking age is 16-18 in most of the world and it works fine.
And you are not listening to me. The world didn't start with the under 21's. Old farts tried it once before under the same logic you are employing. The experiment failed miserably so the law was changed back to 21. Now when you become an old fart, you can change the law then. But I doubt you will as age and experience will show you what I have learned. Drinking is not an important aspect in anyones life. So if you don't want to die for your country before you reach drinking age, then don't enlist.
I am not concerned with consequences, so the reasons for most becoming prohibitionists after age 40 doesn't apply to me. I am concerned with consent - and the use of that consent in ways you find repugnant is irrelevant. Thus, the moral decline everyone sees once they hit 40 will not be a sufficient reason to make it illegal for consenting adults. I don't disagree at all that alcohol causes a lot of problems. Of course it does. And it causes a lot of problems in young people - but that's not a sufficient reason to deny them their choice as an adult in a free society. Especially not for the vast majority who experience no such problems.
