I read the first few paragraphs of this tripe and it turned my stomach. This Letter of Solidarity basically expresses college faculty views on America from a view so far left that even Marx and Lenin would turn their backs on it. Yes, everyone has the right to speak up. But, these words come from professors of the Masters of Social Work Department at a state- and federally-funded institution. And, how many parents who spend their money trying to help their children gain an education even know about this garbage. Okay, so read it for yourself. And, the author of this presents an argument far better worded than my little blurb here. Sadly, this seems to me a representation of the state of our American education system. Please provide the critique of Marxist theory that you think you're referring to. Lets be honest now: this is an anti-intellectual grunt that uses Marxism as an insult and as a means to avoid content.
Yes. Accumulating more than what you need to live a reasonably satisfying and wealthy life, using goverment force to guarantee title to your possessions, is a mental disorder. We are all born to this earth and need it to survive, yet only a very few steal most of the resources, and declare it "fair," even as they earn more and more rent-seeking and living like a parasite off the labor of others.
Reading vacuousness wouldn't be consistent with rationality. Why don't you instead show your might? Where's the Marxism in the OP?
I'll ask again (but I know you can't construct a relevant remark): Where's the Marxism in the OP? Try to respond
Let me break it down for you. First and foremost, I am responding to the thread, not you. Secondly, you are not the arbitrator of discussion - I am not obliged to follow your lead, and neither is anyone else. Lastly, and most damningly, had you simply reread my post, you'd see that I made an edit, so that what was intended to be a subtle yet withering reversal of OPs logic, became more clear and obvious (largely due to your inability or unwillingness to reevaluate what I said for just as long as it takes to read a few additional sentences). I urge you to come out of Berzerker Mode and engage with people like an adult.
Rich people live off the labor of others. Seems like classism to me. The USA fought a revolution against such classism, so it surely can no longer exist.
The only group of people engaged in class warfare right now are, paradoxically, the super rich, and the people they manipulate into supporting them, often the dirt poor. It is truly impressive how capable the oligarchy has become at getting people to suppress and object to their own self-interest, all the while pursuing their own ruthlessly.
So why didn't you manage a reference to Marxism, given the stupidity of that comment blubbered about it? This is true. If someone wants to make vacuous comment I can't do anything about it. Asking for Marxist comment on a Marxist comment may seem to strange to you. I'd just look at you quizzically. Why you'd avoid the bleedin obvious just doesn't compute
But it will trickle down, right? We've been waiting 30 years for the wealth to trickle down so if we wait another 30, it's bound to happen. Surely the rich getting richer and the income gap growing is a good thing. How can an extra few million poor people per year possibly hurt the economy?
I did manage a reference to Marxism. In fact, I basically reiterated the core Marxist analysis of private property. Once again, and for the final time, reread my post.
The sad part is how easily handled all of this is. And we could even fix it by reducing government, via a guaranteed minimum income, or similar scheme. Alas, some people just won't get over the bootstraps delusion. - - - Updated - - - It's okay to have made an error. Next time just reread instead of act like an idiot.
I'm not a fan of a basic income. Some people just aren't good with money. Better social programs with a smarter welfare state seems to work in the wealthiest countries, so I'm sure it could work in America. If unregulated capitalism is going to create such a vast poverty disparity, there should be social programs ready for those who can't cut it in a sink-or-swim society. The main problem is that most people fighting for the privileged few are unprivileged themselves. How do you fight indoctrination?
Stand by for incoming bleedin' obvious. Education. Education is the weapon against indoctrination. Unfortunately it's easy to say and very difficult to put in train. Propaganda works on the ignorant, indoctrination is in place of education,. Real education destroys both ignorance and indoctrination.
Thank you. Unlike the childish little name-callers and nya-nya posters, you have made a valid point worth considering. The idea behind my posting this was to out the propaganda being used by tenured professors to propagandize their students into their leftist attitudes.
For mine any teacher who seeks to indoctrinate is not educating and should be disciplined. Problem is that isn't always easy to identify. We can have stereotypes of teachers I suppose. They can be left - such as Howard Kirk in Malcom Bradbury's "The History Man": or the crusty old conservative such as Professor Charles Kingsfield (a superb John Houseman) in The Paper Chase. Kingsfield, in the film, is far less hostile than the character Kirk. Either way indoctrinators are not educators.
I asked you for information, none was provided. Do you know where I hear about Marxism the most? Cultural theorists and right wing Americans. Now one of those groups isn't using it quite right...
I read it and found very little in it that was Marxist or anti-American at all. It seems to be a letter stating the obvious, that our cultural norms are making progress in many areas and that we must be vigilant in defending the true nature of our ideals as we move from one era to another era. I fail to see how this letter threatens you or America at all, it merely hopes that we remain committed to our own principles of freedom and equality for all. As for the comments regarding state funding of the university, this baffles me. A university is a place where a mind can be exposed to new ideas, challenged by debate, strengthened by understanding and dedicated to the task of exercising yourself mentally. It is not a place where anyone, left or right, should be allowed to skate by without having thought deeply. If you want to rant about our educational system, rant about the lack of critical thinking so many students suffer from as a result of their culture, upbringing and backgrounds. We want minds to think not comply.
The Frankfurt School won. They succeeded. They managed to infiltrate academia almost a century ago and now our higher learning institutions are completely backwards and devoid of any kind of reason, critical thinking, or rational thought. To put it bluntly, going to college now actually makes you stupider instead of smarter.
I have no idea how you come to this conclusion. Our universities are filled with students from all across the world. I think you are channeling some right wing story line about the socalled liberal academia. You might want to think long and hard before you blame highly educated people of being liberals as if that was a sign of decay or ignorance. If the majority of PHDs end up liberal, that might be telling you something.
