There are idiots in every fan-base, but they don't have nearly as much impact on the actual games as they might believe that they do. No harm in them wearing their magic underwear on game day though...
That one still is a tough one to forget. But my Irish boys and my local Boise State Broncos both won their bowl games, each on the last play of their respective games, so the domer is a happy boy.
I was wondering with a name like "domer" if you weren't a Golden Domer. I went there for a couple years, too, same class as Joe Theismann, so that must be five years before you. Keenan Hall, across from the North Dining Hall. I also got a couple degrees at the UofArizona, the same school your Broncos just throttled. In all the games I watched yesterday and on Wednesday, it seemed that one team or the other came out flat. And then we had a freshman quarterback who showed his age. Ah, well, they'd did a lot better this year than I thought they would. Congrats on both games. I didn't believe ND was going to be up for LSU.
Yeah, I was surprised ND could hang with them. The Irish have been woefully overmatched for many years in the bowl games and the record shows it. As for Kelly, I don't like the guy much and my wife REALLY dislikes him! I was in the class of "Rudy", literally. Started the year after Theismann left. Grace Hall, which may not have been built yet when you were there. As for the Broncos, a nice finish in the post-Chris Peterson era. We were 3-2 and stomped by Air Force early, but the team found itself and finished nicely. I was fortunate enough to attend the first BSU/Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl, which was one of the great sporting events I've ever attended. Sure glad no SEC team is in the final!
I ran across another Domer the other day. He also lived in Grace, but a couple years behind you. I remember walking from Keenan to the dining hall one day with our hall monitor (or whatever they used to call those guys) and he told me there were going to be two now towers with the first one to be called "Grace". I asked him if the second one was going to be names "Indulgence". Reverence has never been my strong suit. Ol' Ara was the coach when I was there. He's getting up in years, but he still makes his home in Tucson which is where I have been forever. His grandson is an orthopedic surgeon here that I've been to a couple times, mostly for a knee problem that I sustained playing football on a field just about where Grace stands now. There hasn't been an Ara sighting in years so I don't imagine he's doing too well. I don't know about Kelly yet. He said early on this year that ND won't be a good team until next year. I'm holding him to it.
I am guessing that, by "ND," you are referring to Notre Dame--not North Dakota. (North Dakota State is a Division I football powerhouse--it has won the Division I championship the past three years; and it is currently scheduled to play in the finals this year also, after having trounced Sam Houston, 35-3, on December 19.) That is similar to the "SD" that I sometimes see on sports shows; and then I remember that South Dakota does not have an NFL team, so it must be referring to San Diego...
cuz LSU, UF, UT, have done anything recently? yet again... claiming entire conference domination because 1 team wins the title is simply not true. The sec west was sure trying to distance themselves from the east when the east got swept by the ACC.... but now that the East won their bowl games.... the SEC west is all "SEC went 7-5 this bowl season"
Off-topic. As a Catholic, I'm pretty much done with Notre Dame after allowing Pres. Obama to speak at a commencement. It's a secular school for the most part now...God has left that campus a long time ago. It's just another college chasing the gravy train of Division I football and basketball revenue and alumni bragging rights. As it once was the flagship Catholic University in the U.S; it has fallen from "Grace," no pun intended. There is no longer a Christian vision among it's leadership. Money changers in the temple = Notre Dame sports; what with the multi-million dollar contract with NBC to air their games on television.
I am what I am Like I said, Meyer knows Saban and could figure out how to beat Bama and exploit their weakness If Jimbo could not contain Mariota in the pocket that it would be a long day for FSU both were correct IDK if OSU has enough to beat Oregon this year. Frankly, I sure hope the hurry op offense of Oregon takes hold. Maybe we'll see a leaner linebacker enter the game in order to corral QB's who run. linemen who weigh 50 pounds less might be good for the game (and their health) as well. maybe we'd see less injuries in the trenches sidenote- if only Oregon football could rub off on major league baseball and teach those people how to speed up a game
I think the Oregon FSU game is going to fundamentally change the game of football starting next season. AU beat bama with the hurry up, but FSU was able to stop it for the title. You saw teams like WVU start trying the hurry up with mixed success. (they did hang tough with Bama) But Oregon ran it to perfection against FSU and it showed. Our offense was running a traditional scheme, and Oregon could adjust to it and did it well. FSU didn't have time to adjust and got mentally exhausted. two offensive fumbles put us in a hole, and Jameis tried to make a play and the result was the worst play in college football history.... lol I like Oregon in the championship simply because OSU hasn't seen that style of play this season. It could get just as ugly against them as it did against FSU.
but, Urban is more flexible and creative than Nick or Jimbo I don't see the Ducks running it up like they did with FSU It didn't take long in the NFL to shut down Miami's "wildcat" and it won't take long for big college programs to shut down Oregon. Big question; does Oregon have a replacement for Mariota who is a dual threat QB? Again, look toward the NFL. Would Seattle have success with a pure pocket passer?
I said early on, our defense was our weak link. Jeremy Pruitt adjusted to AU's hurry up last season..... our current DC was a linebacker's coach promoted up when Jeremy left. He's just not at the Pruitt level Honestly, at this point, I would love to see FSU adopt a new hurry up style.... I'm willing to bet a bunch of ACC middle of the pack teams will start using it so they can try and beat us.
Any system where half the teams get to go to a bowl is just wrong. You literally only have to be over .500 to qualify. Next they will start handing out "First Place Participation" ribbons to all the players.
Why is it "just wrong"? Everything outside the two bowls that decide the national champion is irrelevant in the overall picture. Bowl games are about MONEY, not feel good participation awards.
agree.... I'd argue their is National title, playoffs and then a few upper tier bowls, but then... yeah... pretty meaningless in terms of relevance.... but there are TV monies that can be made even with the 6-6 teams.
No one should be rewarding teams with records that are the literal definition of average. I get why they do it and they get more money but if you watch some of these between the crowds and the announcers they act like their team actually accomplished something that season when the only thing they did was score better than 50% of the other teams. That is horrible by any other standard. I had to deal with this in the Badgers game. They didn't get to the Rose Bowl but they got into the Outback Bowl which is beneath the Rose Bowl. I am sitting here watching people get excited about the Badgers winning a "loser" bowl. Its like people manage to convince themselves that their team is really good when they are in fact not. If they want to have another series of game then call them something else. Calling them all "bowls" though is misleading and it gets annoying having to explain to other people which ones are for the real winners and which ones have sucky teams playing in them. They keep changing the names as well which also gets annoying.
it's money makers for both the team and the TV deals from it..... You don't have to call it anything different as anyone who watches NCAA realizes that there is a huge difference between the Motor City Bowl and the Orange Bowl, even though both are called bowls
You would be amazed the number of people including people who follow college sports that can't keep all the bowls straight. I would be fine if they put something like "second tier, third tier" or some other qualifier in the titles of the bowls so that people know exactly where those teams stand. They can instantly know then if the teams they are watching are actually good football teams or if they suck. I just hate rewarding mediocrity. And stop handing out trophies, losers don't deserve trophies. This doesn't fly in professional sports as everyone remembers the outcry when Seattle got into the playoffs with only 7 wins a few years back, so why is it acceptable in college sports? Quit rewarding losers and make them work for those trophies.
oh I definately can't keep them straight, or even follow them.... but they wouldn't be doing them if there wasn't money being made... Everyone that watches knows which ones "count" and which ones are fillers. Even though my team (FSU) lost in a real bowl, my UF gator fans buddies are trying to act like winning the Birmingham bowl against ECU means they are doing better than FSU..... lol but UF and ECU both made money
Yeah, I had that here with my team losing to Ohio State (I root for Alabama solely because they have a midget on their staff) and I had the same discussion with some Badger fans around here. Sorry, but the Badgers are not in the same league as Alabama or any other team from the SEC for that matter.
Wisconsin is not Bama level... but they barely lost to LSU, and the beat AU..... seems Wisconsin could fit nicely in the SEC West but agreed to the point that wisconsin smack talking Bama losing by a score when they lost by 59...... very laughable...
LOL.........I forgot about their Ohio State loss. Dammit! The ultimate comeback and I completely missed it. They might fit in but not until they get rid of Stave. Usually you can find at least a couple of people that will defend any quarterback on their team simply because they are on their team. Not with Stave, everyone I know hates his guts.
#blameJameis lol I just got my ESPN-FSU update.... it scrolled through the top bar of my phone like this.... at this point, my ears are perking up and my eyes are wide...... I'm thinking "won't go pro...." you have to open the announcement for the rest of the line.... lol... I was mad.... I fell for click bait....
