And the Arab world is going after her for doing so. And the western media is ignoring the whole affair, simply making inane announcements like the Saudis called home their ambassador along with Kuwait and others. We all know how women are treated there. Read the article @ http://www.spectator.co.uk/features...audi-arabia-what-happens-now-concerns-us-all/
Yes.. this was last week. She probably doesn't realize that there are no roadside services or facilities and that traffic is a horror or that women drive on university campuses. Meanwhile, the Gulf Co-operation Council condemned her ‘unaccept-able interference in the internal affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’, and I wouldn’t bet against anti-Swedish riots following soon. Yet there is no ‘Wallström affair’. Outside Sweden, the western media has barely covered the story, and Sweden’s EU allies have shown no inclination whatsoever to support her. A small Scandinavian nation faces sanctions, accusations of Islamophobia and maybe worse to come, and everyone stays silent. As so often, the scandal is that there isn’t a scandal.
So, Margot2, what is YOUR attitude as to how Saudi Arabia - and other Muslim nations - treat women? Is it okay to deny them the right to drive a car? Or to leave their homes without being accompanied by a male family member? Or to go without wearing their face-covers?
I don't know about "resolved," she did back down and apologize. But, what she said has merit. The flogging of a blogger IS medieval. There is no denying that. And, Wallstrom was blocked from speaking about democracy and human rights at the meeting of the Arab League in Cairo. As long as the Al Saud family control the country like a dictatorship - they deserve to be called a dictatorship. When flogging those who disagree with the family stops -- when women are allowed to drive EVERYWHERE men can drive and have equal rights under the law - then, and only then, can be begin to use the term "resolved." Until then - they're still just cavemen in designer jeans.
Or perhaps very few people care what Sweden does or doesn't do. There is way too much other big stuff going on in the news, world of much more importance than what one Swedish PM says about women in Saudi Arabia.
I agree.. I did a large press conference in KSA a few years back and one of the questions was on women's rights. I have always been somewhat conservative and opposed to forcing change on other people or cultures.. So my view is that the Saudis will come into modernity in their own way in their own time and we should butt out.
I agree. In a way, at least how I look at, trying to force our culture and values upon the people of other nations is no better than colonization. We being the colonial masters trying to dictate the values and type of government upon others.
One thing for sure, Cameron's government won't stand up against the Saudis and in fact he is going to attempt to bring in a bill to remove Human rights in this country. Doesn't anybody see what this man is?
Maybe someone ought to point out the fact that she's not the Swedish prime minister. She's the foreign minister.
absolutely none of her business, not her country - these idiot fems should stay at home, where they belong!
Very interesting, what bill is this exactly? Personally I would like to see Britain leave the International human rights bill, in favour of a British bill of rights as the predominant law. After all only the British electorate & their governmental representatives should enact laws that effect people living in Britian.
