That pie graph looks really scary. The blue, military part of it is beginning to look like a big blue pac-man about to eat and digest the nonmilitary and civilian expenditures! This country can't remain half war-mongering and half civilian!

china had the biggest army in the world yet Vietnam did not give in their demands, not to mention India BTW. Having the biggest does not mean having the strongest. And even in our own history, not to mention something like Vietnam from 1962 to 1975 defeated the USA, where we defeated the strongest and best military in the world called England from 1776 to 1781. Israel used to be feared and invincible until a rebel group defeated them.

 

Don't it tho… lol. I'm all for the US being strong enough to take on anyone that would attempt to mess with us, but there is a point of overkill. When we can't do other important things because we don't have the money, that huge military budget seems out of proportion.

 

Oh look at that graph they carefully define and limit "discretionary spending" to make the military which is only about 18% of the budget look like more than half. Here is a hint the total 2015 budget was 3.7 Trillion. Your graph represents 1/3rd of it.

Actually, I was thinking of the Battle of Canae and the Battle Of Arausio.

Rome had three major changes to its military during the Roman period. They were defeated several times in which those changes occurred after the defeat. Romans were extremely practical when it came to winning but had their fair share of losses. They were not as invincible as you may think in your romanticized version of that time period.

There is a difference between fighting someone on your turf and fighting someone on theirs. Vietnam had a very capable military and being that they had the advantage of their own surroundings and applying guerilla warfare . And we had Vietnam beaten, but certain politicians changed the tide.

Lets not forget China does not have a Navy either, but when they finally get one we will all be on notice.

And as far as Israel, it take multiple countries for anyone to take that little spec of a military down, and Israel is scrutinized ofor rules of engagement meanwhile those "rebel group terrorists" they have to fight from all sides get to do anything they want. If Israel was allowed to go full force all the time like the terrorists are and no face repercussion, there wouldn't be much left of the coward rebel groups who hide amongst civilians, hide their weapons in schools and shoot rockets out of people back yards. Also don't allow people to leave when Israel is attacking a certain area so their sorry ass rebel groups can make sure and have a high civilian death count for propaganda purposes.



Now with that tidbit of info out of the way. Would you dare send any military into Chinas homeland and start a fight? You would be absolutely insane too, might as well jst like up your own troops and put a bullet in the back of their heads.

 

That huge military budget we now have also is loaded with pork and all kinds of things that are not related to actual combat capability. Lots of requirements for various social programs, job training programs for those who lost work because of trade deals, non-military construction programs. The congresscritters try to use it for pork thinking they can keep telling us its for "national defense".

 

Or after starting one to many wars with one leader, the next leader came in an got even more (*)(*)(*)(*) stirred up. You know, like the Messiah has done.

 

Canae seriously? We are talking about the late empire here. Not early Roman didn't even have a standing army republic. Serioully do you understand the difference between 3rd century BC and 5th century AD. Its rather large.

Hate to ruin a good rant but isn't the USA's military already the most powerful on the planet? I mean except when the commander in chief is a total screw up that will not use force when necessary to be a productive deterrent?

Stupid eh? There was no deception intended or involved. The budget is what it is. Yes, that graph was discretionary spending, because Social Security and Medicare fall in a different category.

Here's total budget graph. Remove Social Security and Medicare and the military is still the largest expenditure. It's getting a large portion of the budget, as it should. However, it dominates any other spending that we do, other than the retirement program and medical care for those that paid into it all their lives. I'm not arguing anything other than we already have a huge budget, a well trained military that is second to none in the world. Trump wants to make it bigger. It's already bigger than any other country except China, and we spend three times what China does, yet they have a billion more people than we do.

1. The theory was raised that Muslims "only win with superior numbers"....isn't that how the allies (US, UK, Soviets) defeated the Germans and Italians? We had the most men and equipment?

2. The Defense Industry will find new ways to spend LOTS of our money...and politicians (Repub and Dem) who'll gladly give it to them. And those same politicians will tell their constituents that boondoggles and strategic weapons that play ZERO role in an anti-terrorist fight are "necessary".

One thing you cannot do is make projections today on the kind of conflicts that will be fought in the future. Militaries have been accused of planning to fight the last war and having lack of foresight for years. Today we are fighting assymetrical conflicts against unsophisticated opponents. That may not be the case tomorrow. You cannot say there will never be combat on traditional battlefields with huge armies, corps, divisions against another similarly organized opponent. You don't know. It is in the best interest of all of us for the military to be planning for all eventualities, the unknown unknowns as Rumsfeld used to say. Don't know about the other services, but the Army is working now to be more lots more mobile yet more lethal in all kinds of conflict and is developing weapons that reflect the ability to fight all kinds of wars.
