I'm halfway through Ulysses. In the meanwhile I'm reading a book about Romani culture and the situation of Romani people in Europe and Hungary in particular. (I would provide a title but the book only exists in Hungarian language and because of that I think it would be pointless.)

Voyage en Icarie (Voyage to Icaria) by Cabet, after seeing it mentioned by H.G. Wells several times. I'm really pleased with my French comprehension; I used to have to look up every other word, but I've improved a lot.

SVANTE PÄÄBO IS THE FOUNDER of the field of ancient DNA and is the director of the department of genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. In Neanderthal Man he tells the story of his mission to answer the question of what we can learn from the genes of our closest evolutionary relative, culminating in his sequencing of the Neanderthal genome in 2009. We learn that Neanderthal genes offer a unique window into the lives of our hominin relatives and may hold the key to unlocking the mystery of why humans survived while Neanderthals went extinct. Drawing on genetic and fossil clues, Pääbo explores what is known about the origin of modern humans and their relationship to the Neanderthals and describes the fierce debate surrounding the nature of the two species’ interactions.

I think they're doing a pretty good job with it myself. There are some differences, the main one being that the entire storyline for Chrisjen Avasarala (the UN undersecretary) doesn't even show up until book two, and the whole Amos/Holden conflict is much milder, but overall they've done a really good job of bringing book 1 to life this season. If you haven't read the books, there is a really wild ride ahead...

If you're into science Decoding the Message of the Pulsars by Paul LaViolette is fascinating. Mainstream science can't figure out what pulsars are so they decided to make something up. Forever more we will say that pulsars are neutron stars. LaViolette pretty much disproves that theory. These 'neutron' stars pulse with such regularity they couldn't possibly be natural phenomena.

I'm currently binge-rereading Nietzsche, because he was like the philosophical personification of teenage cynicism. And I, er, totally need more teenage cynicism. I'm on Die fröhliche Wissenschaft (The Gay Science) right now.

"A superb book.…Mearsheimer has made a significant contribution to our understanding of the behavior of great powers."―Barry R. Posen, The National Interest
The updated edition of this classic treatise on the behavior of great powers takes a penetrating look at the question likely to dominate international relations in the twenty-first century: Can China rise peacefully? In clear, eloquent prose, John Mearsheimer explains why the answer is no: a rising China will seek to dominate Asia, while the United States, determined to remain the world's sole regional hegemon, will go to great lengths to prevent that from happening. The tragedy of great power politics is inescapable.

Oh you have to read the book "Five people you meet in heaven." It is absolutely excellent. about a man who is an accident and these people/spirits he meets on his journey. It sort of explains why people come into our lives even if only for seconds and how we affect others lives without even knowing it.

Sleep Logistics as a Force Multiplier: An Analysis of Reported Fatigue Factors From Southwest Asia Warfighters

Less a book and more of a thesis really. Well, it's a thesis to be precise. It's a data analysis regarding the sleep patterns of warfighters deployed to the Southwest Asia (SWA) Area of Operation, and operating in Iraq and Kuwait from August 25 - October 15, 2003.

I deal with fatigue risk management and shift schedules with clients ranging from FedEx to the Department of Defense.

I wish I had more time to read for fun, but this would interfere with my posting time here of course. When I do read, I like science fiction. The last sci-fi book I read was Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. The story begins in the present day when the explosion of the moon triggers an extinction event on Earth, Stephenson ranks among the better sci-fi writers today, at least in my opinion.
