Do you consider Hispanics/Latinos as "White" racially when it comes to your mind?


I ask purely out of interest in racial subconscious's of people. I do not care about any faction or ideology.

 

It depends on which Latino person you pick and Latinos in the US carry 18.0% Native American ancestry, 65.1% European ancestry, and 6.2% African ancestry on average. Those who self-report as White Hispanic may have more European ancestry than ordinary Latinos and Mexicans carry more Native American ancestry than Latinos overall, according to the genetic study (Bryc et al. ‎2015). As of 2010, 50.5 million or 16.3% of Americans identified as Hispanic or Latino and 53% of them also identified as white.

 

I didn't vote in your poll because I believe it needed another choice: "It all depends" explanation in post to follow.

The reason is that latinos can have complexions from very black to very white. In places where there were huge numbers of African slaves, the result of intermixing between native peoples and Africans often resulted very dark 'latinos'.

In Europe, latinos are usually medium to very light complected. In Mexico and South America they can be anywhere in the dark to white range. I know latinos with blonde hair and blue eyes, who are much lighter skinned than many people who identify as Anglo. So, I don't think of latinos as being 'either white or not'. In other words, there is no simple, pat, answer.

In fact, Almost all Spanish are mixed people.


1) Spanish were enslaved by blacks for 700 years.

There were over 4 million Spanish slaves.
Many Spanish slaves were sold to Africa.

The ‘Golden age’ of Moorish ruled Spain-
When Blacks conquered Spain, the first export was 3000 blonde Spanish virgins to the slave pens in Africa.

For years the Moors demanded, and received Spanish girls for use.
The Black Army which defeated Spain - 7,000 men consisting of 300 Arabs and 6,700 native Sudanese.

Then more blacks arrived in Spain. They brought no women with them. Most of them married with their Spanish slaves.


2) After Spain gained it freedom, Africans still took hundreds of thousands Spanish slaves for over 200 years (1530 to 1780). The Spanish writer, Cervantes was a slave in Algiers, he was ransomed.

In the "Song of Roland", the Moors were described as "Blacker than ink with large noses and ears" and with "nothing white except the teeth."

 

My wife is from Ecuador and could
begin her application for Israeli citizenship with a reference to her mom's maiden name.

She is definitely white..... although she is a lot more brown than me.

 

If they're indigenous peoples, they're not white. If they're Spaniards, they are. Obviously.

 

Actually, I seldom think in terms of race. It is a waste of my time since there is nothing to be gained by it.

 

Most in this country are mutts just like all of us. So yes they are as much white as me being Greek and German.

 

The Moors were a mix of North African, Roman, Greek, Phoenician, Egyptian and Sub-Saharan peoples. To say they were black is to say Vijay Singh is black. It's all meaningless anyway.

They were created to show the various mixes of offspring in the New World...Spaniards and the Portuguese were horny conquerors, they started inter-breeding with locals and slaves almost immediately. Very few Spanish and Portuguese women went to the New World single.

As a fan of 23AndMe I have noticed northern Latinos filter out as
60% White and 20% native American, about 2% Black and 0.5% Ashkenazi/Jewish.
Both Eva Longoria and Michelle Rodriguez follow the above averages.

I imagine 150 years ago, Irish were not considered "white" by many in America.

I personally care less about their skin color than I do about their character. Same applies to everyone else, regardless of skin color.

If you mean Caucasian, that covers a lot of ground - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caucasian_race - especially the several maps of distribution. N. Africa, the Middle East into India, & much of Europe - so, yah, Islam was a presence in Spain & Portugal for a good 800 years - but Arabs are also considered to be Caucasian. Blacks out of Africa tend to be sub-Saharan - although that varies too.

Why is this a yes/no question? Below are two pictures of Hispanics. It's called Hispanic because of regions historical ties to Spain, and that they speak the Spanish language.

Ive known and dated a few white Mexicans.

 

I view it as individual. Some Hispanics are white. Some are black. Some are predominantly native American. Others (rarely) are Asian descent. Most are mixed. In general though, I consider them white (as I do Arabs).

 

The Hispanics we get in the US are usually not white. The white Hispanics, who are descendants of the same Europeans that US whites came from, are usually in their home countries, educated, working, and providing for their families. They don't feel a pressing need to go invade another neighboring country and drop a few anchor babies for welfare and citizenship. Go figure.

 

...and yet, that doesn't mean I didn't catch you engaging in a bit of ridiculous virtue signaling.
