The Beatles by a mile because they kept churning out great stuff year after year.. I'd rate the Beach Boys as second best, then there's a whole bunch of groups in third place. Funnily enough, I never rated the Rolling Stones very high at all, they had a few big hits but that was about it; they were more of a 'rebel icon' than a proper music group. My 'credentials'? I was a teenager in the 1960's, I was friggin there.. This sad freak below is me, I looked like this through the 60's onwards-
Well, this is not a hard one for me. I consider Rock and Roll to be like being in a rowdy bar filled with all kinds of rough people getting high or drunk, dancing or fighting, with cigarette smoke, dirty bathrooms, kids, bikers, moms, professors, plumbers and every cross section of life. The music is driving, there is a hot lead guitar, great beat and a hell of a drummer. You want to move. Given this description, the best rock bands of all time are the following: 1. Stones 2. Beatles 3. Zep 4. The Who 5. Doors 6. Eagles 7. Allman Brothers 8. Credence 9. Nirvana 10. Clash
Have you seen/heard the Stones play lately? They are still killing it live after over 50 years. If you get a chance, catch Havana Moon which was recorded live in Havana last summer. They were awesome that night and have been every time I have seen them over the years...
No, I'm more into listening to music than going to concerts. I've only been to maybe 10 rock concerts my whole life.
Hmm most talent at each position-easy-Cream but of bands that developed the talent Led Zeppelin -but wait Page came from the yardbirds Ok, the Allman Brothers Duane-the best slide guitarist in rock history-matched only by Derek Trucks who also came from the ABB Dickie Betts-Another top drawer guitarist Gregg Allman-maybe the best southern blues vocals ever-wonderful songwriter their twin Drummers-they and the Grateful Dead's Kruetzman and Hart perfected that tandem The beatles win in terms of influence. Led Zep wins in terms of both the quality of the songs they turn out and the level of technical skill each member displayed. Page is always rated as one of the very best guitarists and he is ahead of some of his peers (Clapton and Hendrix) in terms of his writing. Bonham is usually rated the best drummer ever. Plant often wins best vocalist in hard rock and JPJ played everything really well Other contenders-and a dark horse. Mountain. Felix Pappalardi is one of the forgotten gems in American Rock. Not only did he produce some of CREAM'S best stuff, his vocals, songwriting and brilliant bass was why he was compared to his good friend-Jack Bruce. Lesley West's melodic guitar work was brilliant and Corky Laing's drumming to a back seat to no one Best band of the "whole is much better than the parts-No doubt about this one-its the Clash. Other than Nicky Headon, none of the members were particular lauded for their instrumental skills though Mick Jones was pretty good. Paul had no formal training in the bass and Joe Strummer was no Hendrix or even Johnny Ramone with the guitar. but together, the Clash was not only incredibly influential, their short but mercuric career produced tons of brilliant stuff: London Calling was among the best records in history and all of them were good.
I saw them on the steel wheels tour in 89=I guess you could say about half way through their career or as middle aged performers. They were really good. I think what they have going for them is that-years of really solid music. over 100 really good songs. I don't think they were ever the best act in any given year but they were good when the Beatles were good, they were good when LZ was king, they were good when the Clash Ruled, they were still good when REM and U2 were the top draws, and they are still good. In terms of the BEST live performances I have seen all of these were top of the line LZ-Cincinnati, (the second show-far better than the first) 77 Grateful Dead-New Haven 77, NY 79, 82, Ramones, NY (Ithaca) 83 IIRC Pretenders-Maiden Tour in 81 or 82 NY Jethro Tull (maybe the most underrated band in history-certainly the best band to be slighted by the lugubrious Rock and Roll Hall of fame) Cincinnati 76 Stones-89 Cincinnati Page and Plant-Cincinnati 85 Ian ANderson thick as a brick tour, Cincinnati 2014
1) The Beatles (No Contest. No one else is even close). 2) The Rolling Stones (A Solid and Undisputable #2) ___________ After that, it is up for grabs. (With as many opinions as there are bands).
sounds like timing is your reason The beatles because they were first and the stones since they lasted the longest
As a lad, Mom had a washing machine that top loaded with an agitator inside. Took out the clothes and engaged the wringer. It was a top and bottom roll and when you put the pants or shirt in, the wringer captured the clothing and it came out a lot dryer.
Led Zeppelin had Stairway to Heaven, a favorite Eagles awesome Moody Blues ditto Beatles great. just got back to America when at NY City it was announced they were on the way. Frankly I still love ABBA as well I have a much longer list of favorites
Dead and Company on New Years Eve at the Forum in LA was outstanding! If you get a chance to see these guys, I would recommend it highly. They play Pittsburgh this summer.
I have been to no more than 3 star studded musical events. Who can forget the great Neil Diamond. I was not actually expecting the performance to be so thrilling, so awesome. The audience was in love with Neil Diamond.
That has the segment I was referring to that my dad would tease me about. I had that on a reel-to-reel not long after it came out. I played it everyday for about three years. It had that, Wish You Were Here, and Jethro Tull, Too Old to Rock and Roll, and Aqualung.
No band is technically the greatest. Many have had great moments, but that's about it. Single song examples of greatness (in the rock world, as opposed to the pop world) abound, from otherwise mediocre outfits. A very good example is "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes. A masterpiece of a rock song, as established by the insane number of covers done since it was released. "Closer" by Kings of Leon - outstanding. "Paint it Black" by the Stones. "Killing in the Name Of" by RATM. Soooo many.
Did you hear who the song Sweet Caroline, is about? And "You're So Vain" was about Warren Beatty, IIRC.
Sure did. I did not realize Diamond felt that way about her or her family. That sounds as if it fits Beatty. That man was a world class stud. Women adored him.
