Before the recession started were 138 million jobs. When Obama took office there were 134 million. The job number bottomed out at 130 million so the economy lost 8 million jobs. About 7 years after the bottom and 8 years after Obama took office there are 145.5 million jobs. So from the bottom of the recession 15.5 million jobs were created over 7 years which is about 2.2 million jobs per year or 185,000 per month during the recovery.

However for other presidents we also include bad economic times as well to factor in the net job growth for the president. So lets measure from when Obama took office instead of the bottom of the recession. Its now only 11.5 million jobs over 8 years which is only 1.45 million per year or 120,000 per month.

When you look at our economy compared to 2008 9 years ago we have gained only 7.5 million jobs over 9 years or 850,000 jobs per year or only 70,000 jobs per month. The adult population then was 230 million, now it is 246 million so the population has grown by 16 million but the jobs by only 7.5 million. This shows that after 8 years of Obama we haven't even come close to recovering.


The problem is that this very small monthly jobs growth is barely enough to keep up with population growth and is the result of the national increase of the population not a strong recovery. In fact recessions tend to result in faster jobs growth than normal as the economy bounces back to normal levels. But in Obama's case there was no real jobs growth and when you look at workforce participation rate, or the percent of the population with real jobs, its still close to where it was at the worst parts of the recession.

Before the recession it was 66.5%. When Obama took office it was 65.75%. At the worst part of the recession it was 64.75%. It bottomed out at 62.5% in late 2015 and now is 63%.

However when you look at Ronald Reagan workforce participation increased from 64% when he took office and 63.5% at the worst parts to 66.5% kind of the opposite of Obama.

 

Were mfg jobs shifted out of country in the 80s?
Was the economy based on a housing bubble in the 80s?
Wasn't the 80s recession due to a housing bust?
What jobs were there to recover in 2009 and beyond? What was the base of the economy?
