This is the cognitive distortion called emotional reasoning. It's extremely common among adolescents but not limited to them.
I think he had something to say about brainwashing too, using neuro-linguistic programming**. ** Say something often enough and it will eventually be instilled into the brains of the gullible for ever. Or sommat like that!!
What I said is true. And psychiatry is a science. No need to be defensive. Lot's of people reason emotionally rather than logically and rationally.
Actually psychiatry is another fake science - practitioners of it make a good living by pretending they understand the processes of the human brain.
While there is still a lot to learn about the human brain there is a great deal that is already known. @primate is correct that a great many people emote rather than think. The evidence for that emoting is right here in PF.
There's already a lot known about the human brain - brain surgeons operate successfully on it every day - but that is physiological knowledge - the neurological side of it never will be understood. For those problems psychiatrists routinely keep prescribing various psychoactive medications and hope that eventually they'll find one that has a positive effect.
You have no idea what you're talking about. I assume you've never studied neuroanatomy, neurology, psychiatry or psychology, or have any knowledge of neurophysiology. How does buproprion work in affective disorders? How would you treat a generalized anxiety disorder? What medications are efficacious in the treatment of BPD? You should know this off the top of your head without having to google it BTW. If you don't then you probably should withhold judgment or opinions here.
I've been told exactly that many times, always by those whom it subsequently turns out know less than I do. Also I've never professed to being a chemist or a pharmacist so I obviously can't answer your questions - nor even see the point of answering them. What I can say is that I'm not as stupid as you obviously think!
Not calling you stupid. Just ignorant of the topic above. Doesn't surprise me you have been told that many times as you say. And I do know the topic reasonably well. I don't think you should be surprised to get called on making such ridiculous statements or that you might run into someone who knows the matter much better than you. Not offended or even annoyed either.
I confirm that I didn't intend to offend you or Derideo_Te, but if you're honest with yourselves y'all might agree that what you really mean is that you've learned of lot from what you have read in the NASA publications? That isn't knowledge, it's a paper version of hearsay.
Who would have guessed that the amateur astronomy and robotics that I engaged in was "hearsay"? Early this morning I was looking at Venus. I have personally seen 4 of the moons of Jupiter with my own equipment which is nothing expensive. So explain to me exactly how the NASA observations of Jupiter and it's moons are "hearsay" when I am seeing much the same thing only from a greater distance? Are you alleging that if I had the same equipment as NASA I would be seeing something completely different?
Why not BOTH! What are you, *greedy* - you want to spend money you earned on yourself, instead of forking most of it over to Big Brother, who in the Clintons' words, knows how to spend it better!!!
While they commit suicide at a higher rate than normal Americans. I read about that famous psychiatrist, Sigmund Freud, "analyzing" pedophiles. He would write down their latest exciting story of molesting little boys as if it were some holy research project, instead of turning them over to the police for ruining children's lives. Truly a sick bas****.
No I've learned a lot studying and doing. It's not that hard to say 'my bad' or 'I was wrong' unless you're the Fonz.
What does their suicide rate have to do with the entire discipline being fake in one's opinion? Sigmund Freud is as far away from modern psychiatry as you can get. Even the small number of psychoanalysts don't take much of him seriously these days. He does have the oedipus complex down. And I know of no literature that supports your claim that Freud analyzed pedophiles and didn't report criminal behavior. If you have data to support that I'd like to see it. I know he wrote briefly of pedophilia and bestiality.
Jeez there really is a disconnect: I've never said the universe isn't there (I mean DUH!! it's there every time I look up at a cloudless night sky), only that NASA is self-servingly hyping it up with waffle about black holes, and gravitational waves, and (for reasons which escape me, seeing as it will never be able to support human life) nonsensical reportage about sending hardware to a planet at the extreme reaches of the universe and making up all kinds of crap about the information being received from it, and chasing an asteroid for 3 years in order to catch up for the purpose of landing a so-called 'probe' on it, when it's a known fact that asteroids travel haphazardly through space at 300.000mph, give or take. And in order to con the 'believers' even more purely to increase the circulation figures of the ever-growing number of 'space magazines' (Dan Dare, eat your heart out? ) dress it up with all kinds of over-the-top dramatically dynamic rhetoric where everything is exaggerated with ridiculous levels of hyperbolic fantasy. I mean, it's all so false? Quite honestly I simply do not understand how an otherwise intelligent man - and you obviously are intelligent - can actually soak it all up without question or challenge, and without any tangible evidence whatever. 'Tis a puzzlement to me!
Since we both respect each other's intelligence we can do the math. The asteroids in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter have known orbital trajectories. http://www.brighthub.com/science/space/articles/64710.aspx https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/dawn/news/dawn20100607.html Note that is just one tank full of gas to achieve a speed of 5,500 mph. The orbits of those asteroids are well known and the technology to reach the speeds necessary exists. This is no longer sci-fi but scientific fact. The scientists and engineers at NASA are doing some incredible research on what is essentially a shoe string budget. Millions of people all around the planet are fascinated by science and the new discoveries that are being made. As humans we have always been explorers and this is just another form of exploration. The Brits have a history of exploration and it seems strange that they no longer care to learn more about our amazing universe.
To have eventually caught up with the asteroid after 3 years, the Philae whatever it was called must have been travelling at least ten times faster? I'll let you do the maths (or 'math'? ) on that. Mind you, you can tell me how it was actually steered during those years until it did catch up if you like? Was it from NASA 'mission control' by someone using a kind of Xbox hand controller gizmo?
Remote vehicles, including the Mars Rovers, have onboard computers. Signals containing instructions are sent from mission control beforehand and then the onboard computer executes them at the specified time. The onboard computer (and there is usually a backup) have fail safe modes for rebooting and reorientating their antennae back towards earth in the event that something goes wrong. As far as speed goes there are several variables. Since Mars was on the way it was used to provide a gravity assist speed boost. Secondly matching the speed is much the same as it is for going from a lower orbit around the earth to a higher orbit around the earth in order to deliver supplies to the ISS only it applies to the Sun instead. Since both the Earth and the asteroids are in orbit around the Sun the spacecraft can essentially "wait" for the asteroid to catch it up instead. Think of the ring road around London. If there is a car travelling around it at 60 mph and you are travelling at 40 mph eventually the other car will overtake and pass you. From the graphic above Vesta is "traveling" in the "slow lane" and the Dawn spacecraft takes the Mars on ramp and then waits for Vesta to appear in the rear view mirror and accelerates to match speed so that it can go into orbit around it. Then it moves over into the "fast lane" and repeats the same process with Ceres. I know that is an over simplification but in essence that is how it works.
Thanks - sounds and looks good theoretically (and I'd love to know where you get your info from) but I'm not at all convinced about the practicalities. Sorry. It must be the cynic in me?
