The Confederacy represents White Supremacy and racism.

Almost all declarations of secession by the CSA states cited preservation of slavery as their main agenda.

The Vice President of the CSA stated this, in 1861:

Our new government is founded upon exactly [this] idea; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.

This is why many folks want the Confederate memorials to come down, or at least be move to a less central site like a museum or cemetery.

It does, in that there is truth.

However, the individual soldier shouldn't be your target. It's unseemly.

i see nothing wrong with removing Confederate monuments from the public square

they do have a place, but in a museum or cemetery.

could you imagine a monument to Erwin Rommel in the middle of Berlin?

Why shouldn't they be? Let's take an individual soldier like Robert E Lee for example, shall we?

Should we not go after a guy who gave the order that free Northern blacks would be enslaved if encountered while on the march?

Well I've got his biography on my book shelf. I'm sure there's more antifa tiger material in it than the total of statuary in all Christendom.

The monuments that are being targeted are all of them including the "Soldiers Memorials".

I've opined and you've read that I object to some monuments slammed onto court house front lawns in the 1910's and 1920's. Commercial formulaic crap. McNeel Marble. Great sales staff, wrong reason. They aren't memorials to confederate dead from the town.

    Cheers

Its true that the confederacy was racist. But so was just about everyone else.

Heres some of what Lincoln had to say about blacks:

    1. On the expansion of slavery:

    Lincoln said:
"There is a natural disgust in the minds of nearly all white people to the idea of indiscriminate amalgamation of the white and black races ... A separation of the races is the only perfect preventive of amalgamation, but as an immediate separation is impossible, the next best thing is to keep them apart where they are not already together. If white and black people never get together in Kansas, they will never mix blood in Kansas ..."

    2. On shipping blacks back to Africa:

    Lincoln said:
"In the language of Mr. Jefferson, uttered many years ago, "It is still in our power to direct the process of emancipation, and deportation, peaceably, and in such slow degrees, as that the evil will wear off insensibly; and in their places be, pari passu [on an equal basis], filled up by free white laborers."

    3. On outlawing slavery in the south (before the rebellion).

    Lincoln said:
"I have no purpose directly or indirectly to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so."

    4. On equality:

    Lincoln said:
"I have no purpose to introduce political and social equality between the white and black races. There is physical difference between the two which, in my judgment, will probably forever forbid their living together upon the footing of perfect equality, and inasmuch as it becomes a necessity that there must be a difference, I, as well as Judge Douglas, am in favor of the race to which I belong having the superior position."

    5. On inter-racial marriage:

    Lincoln said:
"Our republican system was meant for a homogeneous people. As long as blacks continue to live with the whites they constitute a threat to the national life. Family life may also collapse and the increase of mixed breed bastards may some day challenge the supremacy of the white man."

Its been suggested (and seems likely) that Lincoln was only intested in freeing the slaves as 'step one' in deporting them all to preserve americas whiteness.

You seem to want to demonize the south as racist, but in reality, the whole damn country was racist (and most of the world, really).

The USA never fought a war to preserve slavery.

    The South did.

After the Civil War, the USA instituted a glorious system of Reconstruction, which sought to destroy all remnents of black servitude and discrimination. Many blacks were elected to State legislatures, blacks were given land, jobs, educations.

The Lee statue in Charlottesville was erected in 1924, so it had nothing to do with the Jim Crow stuff. Yes, the statues were erected as a **** you to the north, but they weren't all just erected during the turbulent 1960s.

Of course by extension, that means America represents racism, after all, that was all legal then. Time to take down the flag.

But neither did the US ever fight a war to end slavery or promote equality. The south killed hundreds of thousands to protect sovereignty and economics based on slavery. The north killed hundreds of thousands merely to protect the legal precedent that its citizens couldnt withdraw from the federal system.

I dont really see a moral high ground here.

Even Lincoln believed blacks were not the equal of whites. But Lincoln believed blacks deserved equal legal rights and they should be allowed to succeed or fail on their own, without any legal barriers preventing them from success.

Should we nuke the Lincoln Memorial and take him off our coins and currency? How far do we go in erasing history?
