exercise your second amendment against those lootin' your live steaks. :gun:

that job does not pay a living wage as 15 n hour is not enough, has to be at least 25 n hour to be commensurate with the higher cost of living. :truce:

have you boarded or taped the windows, and put sandbags at the door for flooding?

hurricane andrew survivors from the 90's recommend this

So's as I arrived at my new Psychiatrist office and took a
position { the prone position } on his fancy leather divan, the
first tink out his mouth was ... So how's It going ?
    I said ... How's WHAT going ?
    he said ... " things.How are things going ? ".
I said I ain't here on his expensive couch to discuss things.
He says ... " Okay then. How are You going ".
I said if I thought it was any his bidness then I'd tell him.
    So's he says ... " Well I guess that's enough for today's session."
So's I says ... OK Doc, what the bill come to.?
Then Doc said ... " Um ... Bill was here yesterday. "
    I said ... Who ?
Doc says ... No ... Who's on First.
    I said ... What ?
    " No.You already asked about WHAT ! "

Taping and boarding didn't help much during Andrew. He was mean, he ripped off the tape and kicked in the boards. With 185 MPH just save your money. Andrews sustained winds were 165MPH compared to Irma's at 185MPH. You should have seen Miami after Andrew, pure devstation. He bent and twisted steel like it was nothing.
We live on a hill so maybe the flooding wont be a problem. We are ready. Right now it looks like we may not be in it's direct line of fire which is a good thing. My prayers and thoughts are for the people who will be in it's path. We have made plans to leave in the event she heads this way.

Won't be as big as Camille. They { Weather Forecasters } have already
    admitted as much.
But you never know for sure. This one could weaken as Camille did
but then Camille came roaring back as a Cat 5.It depends on how low
    the barometric pressure is recorded.

Last time I looked it was at 914 mb it has dropped by about 6 points since this morning it was at 920.

Camille went in to the Gulf, it seems when those storms get into the Gulf they build in intensity.

So far it looks like we are going to be spared the bigger part of the storm unless it goes into the Gulf.

Today is my border collie's birthday. He is one year old, let me tell you about him. He can put his toys in his toy box, sit, stay, get down, shake hands, fetch his frisbees when he wants to play, he will let you know when he needs to go out and he is always eager to please. The amout of words he understands is outstanding. My husband is impressed and he is not easily impressed. I am impressed he is impressed..:)

Unfortunately hurricanes are not respecters of people. They don't cull who gets hit or missed. Some of the hurricane shelters in South Florida are the best, maybe they will live up to their reputation. I would not stay if there was a way to leave. I heard that jet blue was selling cheap tickets so people could leave, a ticket from south Florida was less than a 100 dollars.

    Rush Limbaugh says:

    1. Fill your bathtub with cold water.
    2. Fill every empty plastic container you have with water.
    3. Fill enough ziplock bags 3/4 of water to provide 1 gallon of water/day/adult in your household.
    4. Put the bags in your freezer.

The Ziplock idea is a new one for me. I always fill several 5 gallon plastic containers to always have enough water to flush the toilets.

One of the benefits of having cats for me is I end up with all the spare 5-gallon buckets I could ever want from buying litter :D

But, oh well. I only end up using them for aquarium water, living where I do. No emergencies demanding water or food storage on that scale.

You are very fortunate. Anyone who builds on a floodplain should consider hauling in enough fill dirt to insure that the top of the foundation and sill plate is well above the 100 year flood level. A few inches made all the difference in Houston.

My basement floods a lot, but I guess that is just down to rising groundwater levels. Happens quite regularly. Running the sump so much does get expensive, though.

Good to have a generator back-up for a sump pump, but generator maintenance can be a pain.

Heard a safe place to stash important stuff (pics, papers, etc) that you cant take when you evacuate is... the dishwasher. Its sealed and usually survives floods.

I live on a flood plain in the city, but Im also atop a fairly steep hill, so flooding has never been an issue. A beautiful wooded creek runs near my house so its also a blessing. Cant imagine what it would turn into after 50 in of rain!!!

That's because you are smart -- you and your hubby picked a good spot.

Still you gotta watch out for the big bad wolf and winds.

Plus if you become an island you need food storage (rice, pasta/noodles, wheat, etc.) and water storage (and/or a water filter) and a stash of booze to last you until the waters recede.

You can be high and dry and still stranded.

Speaking of stash of booze, I have been working every day for the past 2 weeks and today (Thursday) is my Saturday and now I finally get to make a mixed drink (Sangria wine with soda water and moonshine) to chase my rum shooters with while I make dinner ( tortilla soup with vegies and mixed seafood). Yum !!

    The bathtub thing is over-rated.

Instead you need a porta potty with lots of plastic bags to poop into. Don't forget toilet paper storage too.

For ice storage I save gallon water containers and put them into the freezer.

For water storage I have dozens of other water containers filled with tap water. To actually drink this you need to filter it and/or boil it though. Water "spoils" too.

A chest freezer is smarter than a standing freezer because the cold air is heavier than room temperature and stays in a chest freezer when you open it (from the top).
