Ex-Trump Adviser George Papadopoulos Pleads Guilty in Mueller’s Russia Probe

Former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos engineered a agreement with Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The was accomplished in secret three weeks ago as these things are. The GIULTY action that Popadopolous pleaded Guilty to was to lying to federal agents about his contacts with Kremlin-connected Russians.

So a nothing burger investigation turns out to be a Hot Tamale !! Let's see how that the WH will spin this!! Did anyone watch the Sarah The Lying Huckabee press briefing ? i did not wonder how lying Sarah spun this baby!!

Is this all that Mueller has? Will Manafort sign like an Italian opera star and lead us up the Manafort ladder?

    Where will this lead?

Also worth noting this trip never took place & Trump campaign brass turned down meetings in Russia so no cigar on Trump/Russia collusion.

The guy George P admitted to lying to the FBI> We do not need to prove that Trump himself directly colluded with Putin. All that we need to prove is that some people in Trump's campaign had colluded or attempted to collude.

I heard the first part of her presser today. I actually enjoyed the reporters drinking beer analogy for the tax reform. But then I had to turn it off.

Did she really try to pass George off as some unpaid volunteer? Seriously?

Collude to do what? Campaigns often have meetings and discussions with foreign entities.

If they did or do they do not lie about the topic. The Trumpeizdas claimed that the meeting with the Russian attorney was about adopting Russuan orphans. Do you really believe that they met over Russian orphans?

You mean the 'nothing came of it' meeting with the Russian that was tied to Fusion and the DNC?

Popodopolous was arrested months ago.. he's been working with Mueller since about July....... so Mueller knows a lot more than what the Trump camp has claimed .. and that is probably dawning on them right about now.

Former Trump Adviser Contacted Russian Who Promised ‘Dirt’ on Hillary: Plea
George Papadopoulos admitted to lying to FBI about his contacts with a professor tied to the Kremlin
By Shane Harris - Wall Street Journal
    Updated Oct. 30, 2017 3:14 p.m. ET
    https://www.wsj.com/articles/former...er-to-plead-guilty-to-lying-to-fbi-1509374354

WASHINGTON—A foreign-policy adviser to Donald Trump’s campaign has acknowledged interacting with a professor who had close ties to the Kremlin and claimed that Russian officials could provide the Trump campaign with “dirt” on Hillary Clinton in the form of “thousands of emails,” according to court documents unsealed on Monday.

The Trump adviser, George Papadopoulos, has pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his meetings with the professor and with a female Russian national he believed was related to President Vladimir Putin.

The information in Mr. Papadopoulos’s plea agreement provides the most substantive evidence to date linking the Trump campaign to Russian attempts to influence the campaign through stolen emails, meetings with Trump aides and other measures.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday that Mr. Papadopoulos had a “very minor” role in the Trump presidential campaign as a volunteer, and that his guilty plea had to do with false statements, not campaign actions.

It isn’t clear from the plea agreement what emails the Russian officials claimed to possess. But U.S. intelligence officials have concluded that Russian government operatives stole emails from the Democratic National Committee and Mrs. Clinton’s campaign chairman, which were then posted online in the summer of 2016 as part of a Russian government operation to damage her campaign.

According to Mr. Papadopoulos’s account, he first became aware of the potentially damaging emails in April 2016. That was a month after Russian hackers stole emails from Mrs. Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta, U.S. investigators have determined. Russian hackers also had infiltrated the accounts of DNC staffers as early as 2015, investigators have found.

Russia has denied meddling in the election.
Mr. Trump has repeatedly denied any knowledge of Russian efforts to damage Mrs. Clinton or help his campaign. The president has called the story a “hoax” conjured by Democrats in order to explain Mrs. Clinton’s unexpected loss.

Former federal prosecutors said that Mr. Papadopoulos’s plea agreement is a sign that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team is aiming to obtain evidence against higher-ranking campaign members.

It seems clear that Papadopoulos, who has pled, is cooperating and Mueller’s team is building on that cooperation,” said Steven Levin, a former federal prosecutor.

Mr. Trump’s defenders played down the importance of Mr. Papadopoulos in the federal probe. Jordan Sekulow, the son of Jay Sekulow, an attorney for Mr. Trump, said on his father’s radio program Monday that Mr. Papadopoulos was “not a campaign professional.”

Mr. Papadopoulos wasn’t a prominent figure in the Trump campaign and wasn’t known to be under investigation by Mr. Mueller. When the FBI interviewed him, he was told that investigators wanted to know about any contacts he had with Russians, and even anyone who spoke with a Russian accent, according to the plea agreement.

Mr. Papadopoulos told investigators that he was conducting “shuttle diplomacy” on the campaign’s behalf with officials from several countries, but “he omitted the entire course of conduct with the professor” as well as efforts he made to establish contact with Russia’s ministry of foreign affairs, the document states.

Mr. Trump was present when Mr. Papadopoulos described his efforts to reach out to Russia.

In late March 2016, after he had become a foreign-policy adviser to the campaign, Mr. Papadopoulos attended a “national security meeting” in Washington, D.C., with Mr. Trump and other foreign-policy advisers to the campaign, according to his plea agreement.

When he introduced himself to the group, “he stated, in sum and substance, that he had connections that could help arrange a meeting between then-candidate Trump and President Putin.”

The Trump campaign shared a photo of the meeting on Instagram.

Mr. Papadopoulos sent multiple emails to other members of the campaign about his “outreach to Russia” and was encouraged by a campaign supervisor to make a trip to Russia to meet with officials. The campaign supervisor isn’t named in the document.

Mr. Papadopoulos admitted lying about the timing of his efforts. In an interview with FBI agents in January 2017, he acknowledged that he had met with the professor, who also isn’t named in the plea agreement and is only said to be “overseas,” but said their communications took place before Mr. Papadopoulos joined the campaign. “I wasn’t even on Trump’s orbit at this time,” he told FBI agents.

In fact, Mr. Papadopoulos had met the professor for the first time in mid-March 2016, after he had learned he would be a senior foreign-policy adviser to the campaign, he later admitted. And the Russian professor only expressed an interest in Mr. Papadopoulos after he found out he was working for the campaign.

Mr. Papadopoulos “understood the professor to have substantial connections to high-level Russian government officials and that the professor spoke with some of those officials in Moscow before telling [him] about the ‘dirt,’” according to the plea agreement.

After that March meeting, Mr. Papadopoulos emailed Trump campaign officials to say he had just met with his “good friend,” the professor, who had introduced him to an individual described in the email as Mr. Putin’s niece, according to the plea agreement. (They turned out not to be related.)

Mr. Papadopoulos said the topic of the meeting was “to arrange a meeting between us and the Russian leadership to discuss U.S.-Russia ties under President Trump,” according to the document.

A campaign official said he would “work it through the campaign,” but that no commitments should be made at that point. The campaign official added, “Great work.”

The professor also introduced Mr. Papadopoulos, over email in April 2016, to an individual in Moscow who said he had connections to the Russian ministry of foreign affairs, the equivalent of the country’s department of state. Over the next several weeks, this person and Mr. Papadopoulos “had multiple conversations over Skype and email about laying ‘the groundwork’ for a ‘potential’ meeting between the campaign and Russian government officials,” according to the plea agreement.

It wasn’t long after that meeting that Mr. Papadopoulos met the Russian professor for breakfast at a London hotel. During that meeting, the professor said he had just returned from a trip to Moscow where he had learned that the Russians had obtained “dirt” on Mrs. Clinton.

"They have thousands of emails,” the professor said, according to the plea agreement.

A recent college graduate when he joined the Trump campaign, Mr. Papadopoulos had a background largely in oil-and-gas consulting but little experience in politics or foreign policy.
    [.......]
Mr. Papadopoulos was arrested in July and since then has “met with the government on numerous occasions to provide information and answer questions,” his plea agreement states.

Another proposed meeting in Russia during Trump's campaign.. Papodopolous' email instructions are to send a low level person from the Trump campaign.

Well no. That's like saying all we have to do is prove that Hillary's janitor was crooked and then we've got her and all the upper level wonks who worked for her. Try again.
