No. Not true. I have only said you have no right to violate another’s rights. The potential can never supersede the actual. You have no right to pursue your happiness that violates the rights others. This is the principle upon which laws must be objectively based. Just as I have the right to write ever I wish, but no right to force others to read it for their own good, I have the right to use any drug, but not the right to force others to partake in my drug use, and conversely, you have the right not to partake in any drug use, but not the right to prevent others. Another example, even simplier: I have the right to free speech, that doesn’t mean I can stand on my lawn with a blow horn and scream vulgar names at my neaighbor, not because society says, not because it violates community standards, not because the majority demands it, but because it’s a violation of my neighbor’s right to peace and quiet on his property. Individual rights are limited only by the principle of individual rights and must never be the the will of the majority. The individual is sovereign over his own soul, and rights are inviolable.
If that's the case, we are back to your supposed Randian freedom to drive drunk through school zones ... unless you run over somebody's kid. It's one or the other.
Of course not. I never called for enactment of thought crimes! I don't have a problem with you standing on the street corner and advocating drug use, either, nor distributing the biography of Timothy Leary.
I'll give you a list of other things I won't let you do: Masturbate outside, even on your own front lawn, at 3pm, if you live near a school. Local city councils can vote on what is "too close." After midnight it's okay, if you really insist. Have sex with another person or defecate under the same circumstances. Urination we can talk about, if you don't purposefully wag your willy at kids (ot at me) though I'm against all public urination because I'm a tyrant. Leave garbage or derelict cars or other refuse on your front lawn, if in the opinion of the city council it is unacceptably (to them) ugly. Moon passersby while standing on your front lawn. Sing "Feelings" or "I Feel Like a Woman" anytime, anywhere. Even in your own home. Even on your own ranch in Montana. Commit suicide on your front lawn at noon. If you do, I'll issue a stiff fine.
I'm sorry, you are too evil to deal with any longer. There is not an honest bone in your body. Well, stupid is as stupid does, by stupid. Not my property, I don't set the rules. Are really that ignorant or just pretending?
Being on your property doesn't give you right to violate the rights of others, including forcing them to watch urinate, defecate, or masturbate, or lob spit balls, or fly drones into your neighbors house or yard, or spitting on them in your living room, and on, and on, and on, and on... Just what does this idiocy have to do with selfishness, liberty, individual rights, or smoking meth in my bedroom? I suspect nothing, just attempt an to smuggle in horror mob rule under the guise of violating common decency. What goes on in private ain't your business. It's quite the leap of faith from using a drug chosen freely do forcing others to watch you bathroom habits.
I think the proper response to suicide under your scenario would be the death penalty--its as logical and rational as your arguments.
The premise for this argument does not hold water. The idea that I should be able to do anything that I want because I am only harming myself does not fly. You destroy your body with drugs and who supports you? You put an extra burden on the medical systems causing all of us to pay higher insurance rates. Who get stuck paying the costs of the crack babies you create? When meth or opiates or your poison of choice makes you unable to support yourself, how do you propose to live? You will be like millions before you and claiming a disability and living off the taxpayer. Sorry, but deviant behavior does not stop at your door. The rest of society has to pick up the pieces.
You didn't think that was funny? A "stiff fine"? To a dead guy? "Stiff". Get it? Stick around, I got a million of 'em!
No. If you kill me because I am black or gay, you deserve the same penalty as you do if you kill me because I am white aand not gay.
Which is quickly being replaced by statism, another form of mystical belief, this time in arbitrary authority. If you don't take care of your body, you will also cause higher healthcare charges and rates to go up. Same if you have any chance of passing on a genetic defect. Should these be criminalized, or is it only when it comes to thinks you don't actually like?
Society is not a living organism. It is merely a reflection of individual activity taking place within it. We are not bees living in a hive, ants tending a nest, or sheep being herded as a flock. We are independent living souls; we are human beings, not insects, nor farm stock. The moral answer to not paying for the lives of others is a political and economic system that respects the sanctity of the sovereignty of each human soul over its own life i.e., individual rights and capitalism. In other words, you don’t want to pay for someone’s drug use, prohibit the government from collecting taxes from you to force you to pay for it. Want to end drug abuse, then end the abuse of the individual under the banner of the common welfare.
Posted on twitter by Quent Cordair: “I support no man more than I do the freedom of all men. I support a constitution to which politicians are subject rather than politicians to which a constitution is subject. I support freedom of the press over a press which is for freedom. (1/2...)“—@quent cordair Wisely put.
If you live in a manner that costs the rest of us money and time, not to mention convenience, we are going to push back. Sorry. Your concept of liberty (which itself is an incorporeal concept, and therefore mystical) is overbroad. You might benefit from reviewing a legal concept (since you like concepts) called "abuse of rights."
Statism is in retreat. The USSR collapsed years ago, Trump is President, Bernie Sanders a laughingstock Also check the nationalistic fervor in the USA and in several countries of Europe, starting with Hungary.
Straw dog. One thing you have control over, genetics are not controllable, by you anyway. If you have been sleeping, unhealthy habits will get you higher rates. Smoking is a prime example of this. As for me, I think you should pay higher rates if you are over weight too. Why should people who keep themselves in shape pay a penalty for the lard butts?
They will be one day. (Genetics) As to who ought to pay what for their healthcare-let the market decide, not some petty bureaucrat in the name of the common good.
