Quite. If you buy an Apple you have to buy Apple software, You also have to do Apple things with it in the Apple Way. This will cost you about twice what you would pay otherwise and it won't run or last any better than anything else. When I went to an Apple Store once I remember they told me "it runs graphics twice as a fast as a PC". I pointed out to them I was a Real Estate Appraiser. I needed specialized spreadsheet and data base capability but graphics do nothing but confuse and infuriate underwriters who don't understand them anyway.. You know what they said ?... "it runs graphics twice as fast as a PC" I've not even looked at an Apple since.
Most people into Apple that I knew were running specialized CAD stuff and other professional Graphics applications..
Apple has severe restrictions on their software that Andriod doesn't have. Many phone companies use Andriod now; I think this is a wise move. I would stick with Andriod over Apple; frankly Apple devices are ridiculously expensive.
The only Apple devices I always use/buy are iPhones. Sorry, Android crowd, but iPhones are just more stable. I’m saying that because I used to own Blackberry, Windows, Android and iPhones and out of all of them, Blackberry was my preferred choice, but the company at first almost died and now makes android phones. iPhones are second most stable systems, IMHO. Then goes Android and Windows is least stable. iPhones batteries are also better - all of my androids I ever owned required recharging in the middle of the day, because batteries were getting old literally 6 months after the purchase. My iPhone Plus easily does two days on one charge. Having said that, their computers are junk when you need to do heavy work with data, like Excel, Access, SQL databases, etc. I was on a verge of buying an Apple computer when Microsoft released Windows 8. I’m glad Microsoft changed its mind, but now apparently they put Windows on back burner with their priorities, so they might screw up again. Recently I started to play with Raspberry Pi and learned Linux a little bit. I think if Microsoft screws up Windows again I might just go Linux all the way.
I've basically switched from Mac to Linux. I keep a Mac around as a backup and as THE way to load up my iPod, and I keep Windows around in a VM for work purposes (in addition to older versions for classic PC gaming), but I do my desktop computing on Linux, and can even do my work on it natively. I also have a small Linux machine hooked up to my TV for multimedia use, including emulating older game consoles. Distributions such as Mint and Ubuntu in particular have made great strides in making Linux accessible to regular people who faint at the sight of a command line. I use Fedora, though, as it uses much more bleeding-edge software versions yet is still typically very stable and functional. I'm also using it on a machine that I put together myself and, in my opinion, is cooler looking than anything Apple has ever designed.
Apple cheaps out even on their screws, to the point that the screws for securing the stand or vesa mount on their horribly expensive new iMac Pro will break when unscrewed! It is so strange to me what is going on with Apple these days. They are totally trashing their own reputation with their current quality standards and customer service policies and practices. Just amazing.
I'm not sure iJustine can really be considered a typical Apple fangirl Her income level might be typical for Apple's biggest customers, though! You'd have to have quite a lot of disposable income to buy very much of what Apple has to offer.
Windows is cheap as dirt. Apple is as expensive as gold. If all you do is fart around on Internet, and small stuff, I figure many people can get away with a Smart Phone / inexpensive tablet. Only when you get into C.A.D. Graphics Art and Gaming do you need bigger Guns.. Windows is a birds nest of programming asking to fail. Programmers refuse to bullet proof windows as they are in bed with Hackers and other Prats. Apple software SEEMS less susceptible to hacking and malware and virus attacks. I believe Windows can be made bullet proof.
I use linux for everything I don't need windows for which is essentially CAD and CAM. Not a gamer, take a bite of the apple no thank you
Nah, the real problem is that no software is bulletproof. The more it is targeted for exploitation, the more exploits will be found for it. A lot of security seems to be simple obscurity. If you use a platform that is not targeted by malware authors, chances are it will not be infected by anything even without security precautions, whereas a heavily targeted system like Windows will absolutely need a regularly udpated security solution, and even that may fail. Paradoxically, while I love and recommend Linux over Windows, I kind of do not want to see it get popular enough as a desktop OS to be targeted the way Windows is, because that would almost certainly place it in the same position Windows is in now. However, it might be that its open nature would contribute more to its security also, not to mention its heavy use in enterprise even today. It might have an edge over Windows, but all the same I know that Linux systems have had their share of security issues come up.
In linux I login in with user name and password, then every time I need root access I need the password again. User and admin accounts as standard. I know you can set windows up like this and it's how I have mine set up but when I see companies turn UAC off I shake my head. Too many years working IT lol, thank god I got out it drives you mad. Worst part is you know they're lying they know they're lying and yet still no one touched the PC before it got a virus lol.
Um.....the second he stated that cars from the 80s and 90s lasted longer than today's cars I shut it off.
This was demonstrated a few years back when someone was apparently bored enough to actually make a virus specifically for Apple PCs. Windows users are used to it and most of them (hopefully) run script blockers, AV and use a firewall. One of the things constantly touted by Apple users is that they don't have to use any of that because Apple is magically immune. It was fun watching the meltdown of the Macheads as they scrambled to learn about basic protections that no Apple users have known about forever.
Yeah, it's funny how Apple kind of cultivates a cult following of people who end up reacting like a religious group when some bad news about Apple comes along. It's a shame when a company cultivates & relies on that sort of customer loyalty, because it indicates laziness on the technical end and an overemphasis on marketing.
Apple is slowly losing their grip. IOS is a mess and their offerings are either overpriced or dated. Where is the next must have product? Cloud based AI through a portable device is next? Who gets there first?
Yar. Maybe they spread themselves out too thinly as a company and subsequently failed to innovate in any given area as a consequence. Then again, they still mint money as it is now through their services, thanks largely to iOS's current dominant market position despite Apple's hardware and software shortcomings. People like their Crapple bullsh!t, it seems, so the App Store, iTunes and Apple Music, and Apple Pay all net Apple some big returns, big enough to make them one of the world's wealthiest corporations already. Given this, I can imagine why they aren't too concerned with competing anymore in the areas of hardware and operating system innovation. They're just not hungry, but have grown much more fat and lazy and complacent on the whole.
As bad as IOS is, its ease of use is a key Apple advantage. Techie(r) types can do a lot more with other operating systems, but that's meaningless for most people. They should be concerned because the OS of the future will be feature rich and user friendly. We'll see soon enough.
One thing I've done recently is try connecting the iPod to iTunes in my Windows 10 VM, and it works. At some point I'm sure I'll end up finding an alternative to the iPod, especially one that can handle FLAC and OGG and can effortlessly connect to Linux. Then my last need or desire for a modern Mac will be gone, I feel, unless Apple does something to make it more appealing. If they put out an ARM-based mini, I'll give that some consideration. At least it shouldn't be subject to overheating and dying the way I've seen the overpriced and underpowered Intel version do. But the iPod is the only contact I have with iOS, or indeed with any mobile OS. Don't have and don't want a mobile phone. If I did have one, I think I would opt for Android. Actually, I guess there are some free and open alternatives to Android, so I might even go that route if I were to get a cell. https://www.tizen.org/ for instance... I could even do away with my Windows VM if I get a decent version of Office running decently on Linux via Wine. It's still difficult at best to rely entirely on LibreOffice when working with Word documents for work. Excel files seem to be handled a little better, but I seldom work with those. Word stuff is really close, but still has the occasional issue. So close, so close..
I used to write software for Apple // computers and dropped Apple like a rock when they killed the // series. I stayed away for years until my incredibly stubborn wife (typical computer user) beat me into submission. I got her an iPhone and iPad and showed her how to use them. Apple won... I'm a beaten man. Windoze 10 does most of what I want these days. I spend more of my time investing, traveling, and playing golf. If I was younger, I'd be all over AI like stink on a dog. Could based quantum computing with AI will change everything.
Cloud based processing combined with Evolving AI and data storage is possible now and the future, reducing the need for processing functions and costs and Security concerns of Tablets, Slates, Laptops etc...
