Winner: Bot Flies, Centipedes, and Bed Bugs! (click for detailed results) Ranked Vote: Discussion Thread ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hey folks, back again and with a new crop of Ranked votes. For a number of reasons, its looking like the next few serious ranked votes are going to be pretty intense, with the one for comprehensive immigration likely to be particularly hefty. So I figure, why not balance things out a bit with a couple more easy/fun votes? Though... if you happened to click on this thread, I hope you came prepared for nightmare fuel... Wouldn't want to meet that thing in a dark alley... ....or a well-lit one for that matter.... The subject of this vote is simple. What are the creepiest bugs on the planet? Be they arachnid, insect, or any creepy crawly thing that's not a bird, mammal, reptile, or large bony fish etc... all are fair game for this vote. No nomination phase this time around. And no letters or specified list to pick from. This vote will proceed similarly to the og vegetable vote. To participate in this vote, simply list out what you think are the creepiest bugs in order of most creepy by writing out their names. You can vote for classes of creepy-crawly (e.g. spiders) or you can vote for specific individual subspecies in your ranking (e.g. black-widows) or a combination. Spoiler: Example Ballot: Spiders, Black-widows, Centipedes, Scorpions, Beetles, Moths If you do vote for a subspecies though, I'll add its overarching class or classes to the end of your vote (assuming you don't include it somewhere in your ranking yourself). That way, at the end of voting, we'll know what is the creepiest class of bug, as well as the creepiest member of that class. .....ugh.... I feel like, by the time this vote is finished, I'm going to need a whole barrel full of baby jumping spiders to act as pallet cleansers. Oh, and btw... though this thread is a bit of a departure from the rest, it is part of a larger series of threads geared towards coming up with and voting on solutions to society's persistent and pressing issues. So if your interested in more ranked votes, you might want to check out the links below: Ranked Vote: Discussion Thread (includes schedule) What To Do To Reduce Partisan Dysfunction In Politics Solutions Oriented Approach to Restoring Meaningful Civil Discourse Ah... that's better. Lastly, if this vote is a bit too creepy for you and jumping spiders don't help, you may want to check out the much less creepy vote on favorite colors instead... Ranked Vote: What are your Favorite Colors? -Meta
Two reasons... First, for this particular vote I didn't want to limit the options at all. Second, I wanted people to be able to rank the options. I want voters to pick from any bug that they know of... and there are a lot out there. Even if write-ins were to be allowed, a per-defined list for something like this would still pretty much encourage folks to pick just from that list. Works for some votes, but I didn't feel like limiting the list made sense for this one. And note, that write-ins actually aren't possible with this site's poll feature, and neither are rankings. So the basic poll pretty much wasn't an option, unfortunately. Would be nice/cool if we could make ranked votes and or allow write-ins with built-in features though... Hmm... might have to ask Falena about that one... -Meta
Because they're awesome. Why wouldn't I use them? Also if there's a list or something that not everyone will need to see, you can put it in the tags to save space. Especially useful for larger lists... Which reminds me, for some reason I keep forgetting to include this: Spoiler: Ranked Vote Notification List If you want to be added to the list (or taken off), go to this thread and make a post and or vote in the poll: http://www.politicalforum.com/index.php?threads/ranked-vote-contact-list.534668/ @Derideo_Te @Pollycy @fifthofnovember @redeemer216 @BahamaBob @modernpaladin @yiostheoy @Spooky @Jonsa @Crawdadr @Longshot @Distraff @Moi621 @Seth Bullock @Thought Criminal @jmblt2000 @61falcon @mamooth @Chronocide Fiend @Merwen @Bob0627 @fmw @clg311 @Mac-7 @APACHERAT @kazenatsu @Socialism Works @Moonglow @FreshAir @rtts48 @perdidochas @Bridget @Bowerbird @scarlet witch @Andrew Jackson @Sallyally @Kode @crank @Bluesguy @AlifQadr @tealwings @Capt Nice @Moriah @Ndividual @wyly @Woogs @DennisTate @Ritter @Junkieturtle @cerberus @Homer J Thompson @JohnnyMo @Smartmouthwoman @ARDY @reallybigjohnson @Falena @PatrickT @StillBlue @JakeStarkey @Nerd of Liberty @drluggit @PARTIZAN1 @Aleksander Ulyanov @Canell @The Rhetoric of Life @Lucifer @vman12 @btthegreat @Mr_Truth @JakeJ @DoctorWho @Loving91390 -Meta
Or this scorpion No matter how big and hard we are there always something a lot smaller and weaker than us to beat our asses lol.
I hate mites, chiggers, fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and leeches. I kill them on sight. I don't get why God made these in the first place. Mosquitoes kill more humans than any other animal besides humans themselves.
No ifs ands and buts about it. Centipedes are the creepiest bugs followed by whatever is crawling on me at the moment.
The Camel spiders from the OP top my list. They're just so... bizarre... I follow them up with a variety of parasites, centipedes, oh, and this thing... Its pretty freaky looking. When I first saw a picture of one I thought it kind of looked like some messed up upside-down spider with weird claws. But it drops down in my list due to all the pictures of folks holding them in their hands like they're pet rabbits. Sort of reduces their threat factor. I didn't put regular scorpions on my list, because while those guys are actually dangerous, they're somehow a lot easier to look at... Camel Spider Bot Flies Tongue-eating Sea Lice Poisonous House Centipedes Centipedes Parasites in General Black Widow Spiders Tailless Whip Scorpions Cockroaches Earwigs Gangis Moths Giant Water Bugs Ogre Faced Spiders Ticks Leeches Pink Underwing Moth Caterpillars Oh, and btw, those Camel Spiders come in a wide variety. All of them freaky... -Meta
Like I was saying before, the tags are there to save space. (afaik, there's no way to take the word "spoiler" out of the label) The one you quoted is specifically used for Ranked Vote notifications. Whenever I post it, if you're on the list you should get an alert. Do you want to be added to the list? -Meta
So on the topic then, you don't like the solifugid huh? Also known as the camel spider directly is a species that lives in the US called the black solifugid. I think they're kind of cool. The bug that gives me the creeps is a botfly
I'm tellin' you, those things just aren't normal. I mean... just look at it. Lol. And I hear they eat people. One lives in the U.S.? Lol, I didn't really need to know that... But you know, somehow the black color does make it a bit less freaky looking. If you hop over to the favorite color thread, you'll note that black is at the top of my list. Hmm, I wonder if that has anything to do with it?... Though doesn't really seem to help my feelings on Black Widow Spiders any... @yiostheoy, what do you think? Does something being your favorite color make it less freaky? That was number two on my list. Yuck! -Meta
Yep the black solifugid. Reading about them because they peaked my interest I learned that they are a separate arachnid class not a scorpion and not a spider.
Yep, which also adds to their weirdness factor. Spiders, mites, and ticks, all have a wide variety of members in their class, some weirdos, but with a bunch that are just like common every-day bugs. Meanwhile, these camel spiders over here are an entire group of weirdos. Whip Scorpions and Daddy-long-legs are similar in that respect, but at least with the long-legs I like them a lot more. Maybe 'cause I used to live with them and they were friendly. -Meta
Camel spiders are relatively harmless. I guess I'm a weirdo I think they're cool but I like whip scorpions vinegaroons and all that stuff. I dated a guy that had a pet spider Rose toed tarantula
