So he has been working on this for a long time now and he will be stepping into a classroom on Monday morning as a full fledged teacher. He's a bit nervous, its middle school and he wants to teach high school, but i advised him one step at a time. It's great to see him accomplish this.
Congratulations. I'm just starting my masters in education and I will soon be facing that also and I can tell you, its extreme anxiety. I wish you and yours the best! I picked the lower grades myself, I don't think I could handle high school.
Thank you that's sweet of you. He was really nervous at first but I think it's just right for him he handle stress pretty well. And kids that age are quite different then high school kids so it will be I need little Crucible for him to earn his respect in the schooling system. I admire him for doing it I kicked around the idea years ago I'm pretty good at teaching people things but I have a lot of doubts is to the frankly usefulness of much of what Public Schools do. But he has faith in it even though he knows it's flawed he ran into it saying that he's going to be the difference that I admire. That's a good personality trait to have.
One word of advice--he shouldn't smile before Christmas. More seriously, he needs to work on being firm but caring for the first few months. Kids need both. Middle school kids, for the most part, won't learn unless they like the teacher, or think the teacher likes them. On the other hand, middle school kids try to get away with murder. I taught Middle school from 1997 to 2000. It was the longest ten years of my life.
Yeah, hopefully he keeps his cool when they try to annoy him and all that. I've seen a teacher get workerd up and blow his top at brats. Doesn't help anybody. I don't remember too many class sessions from my elementary and middle school years, but that I do remember. One or two cool kids (you know the type) in particular would drive this guy up the wall in a science class.
Lol, he had a pretty good Mentor he was shadowing last year and what she said to him was the most important thing was to maintain respect and discipline if the children think they can get one over on you they're going to try every chance they get. LOL at middle school years they pass slower...
My niece teaches high school algebra. I spent a couple of hours helping her grade Algebra 1 review quiz papers(5 periods). It was depressing. Only about 1/4 of them passed it. I even caught 3 people copying each other by the fact that they shared all of the same wrong answers. My niece confirmed that they all sit by each other and gave them all a 0 for the quiz. My brother has taught for 27 years and he is eagerly looking forward to retirement in 5-6 years. He teaches economics and business software in high school. I go to him when I need help with spreadsheets. He comes to me when he needs electrical work. Make sure he goes with TRS instead of Social Security. My mom's retirement benefits are way better than my dad's with Social Security.
Yeah we're looking at all of those options, thanks for the advice he doesn't really have a mentor in this whole thing.
