Dow surges 425 points, global markets rally on investor optimism following trade truce between U.S. and China The Dow Jones industrial average opened with a big boost on the news that President Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, will let the trade war cool for 90 days as they try to negotiate an agreement. https://www.washingtonpost.com/
Well...that's going to cause the kind of inconvenience that the majority of consumers won't put up with. It's not just the Dollar Tree's and Dollar General's of the market. It's WalMart, Target, Sam's Club, Costco, Lowe's, Home Depot and Amazon. It's Apple. It's just about all cellphone accessories at Best Buy. It's Bed, Bath & Beyond. It's a large percentage of clothing sold. It's Midwest retailers like Meijer. It's Ace. It's car and truck parts used by every single auto, truck, engine & transmission manufacturer in all of North America. It machine tool parts. ""...we should reduce imports from china till the do catch up" - yea, good luck with that.
Took an 800 point dump today, in part on skepticism that the trade war truce will yield anything positive. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/d...ts-over-us-china-trade-deal-emerge-2018-12-04
If America is so dependent on china now then their mercantile campaign against America is succeeding And it will only get worse in the future as china grows stronger and we get weaker thanks to the greed and short thinking of American globalists
So correct me if I'm wrong, but you would like the US to return to mercantile economics to combat China?
What greed? What American globalists? Most people aren't made of money. For most people, they have to stretch every dollar. I couldn't even find an American made gas grill under $1700. And don't mention Weber. All of theirs are either made in China or barely assembled here from Chinese and other Southeast Asia sourced parts. American globalists, my ***. American consumers drive this train.
on what items did they get tariff rates down 30%? Probably on something that they import 10 mill a year on. What does the amount of money China have got to do with it. If we export 100 billion to them they can export 130 bill to us.
Yes it is because of foreign investment. Before the leadership went with a capitalistic economy they were cash poor. They encouraged foreign companies to partner with government sanctioned companies that pretty much supplied labor at a little above slave rates. The Chinese then used the profits they made, reverse engineered the products being produced or in some cases just stole the intellectual property and made their own versions, now 25 years later they are technically and business sound companies and their kids are going to our colleges and they will get closer to our level of technical achievement soon.
Close.… How many US companies have joint ventures in China do you think. Do you think they only sell back to the US or do you think they sell more in China? It's why I don't think the tariffs will work. Even if the tariffs lower the imports from China they will lower the profits of the US companies producing the goods in China as well as increasing the cost to US customers and hurting our exports due to the higher prices. You can see this happening already with steel. As far as trade goes we are now one big family. But you don't have to like your Chinese Aunt. I've posted this before, but once more can't hurt. http://www.jiesworld.com/international_corporations_in_china.htm Alas, It's not just Barbie Dolls we make in China - it's lots of stuff. Some of it pretty necessary to our economy.
What mercantilism by America? None here by the US if we insist on balance and fair trade with china Dont abuse the language because you will only confuse yourself
Make that greedy and short-sighted consumers Many of whom lecture other Americans about pollution and income inequality while the buy cheap junk from china that takes jobs away from Americans I dont expect you to fix the problem all by yourself with a gas grill purchase but at least support those who are trying to fight back on a national scale
I want them to raise the costs of American owned china produced goods. I want to stem the flow of transplant companies. How comes the EU not have this type of trade deficit with China? Their cost to manufacture is as high if not higher than ours. Where I worked we had a manufacturing facility in Xiamen (partially locally owned) and a partnership with one in Shenzhen. At first all we did there was stuff that needed a lot of hand polishing/deburring/painting etc. Then it was Assembly work, then it was the CNC and inspection work. The partners made so much money on providing the labor and building that they purchased the company from us and closed the American plant., as it was not needed as the majority of our customer base was now located in China as American Transplants. China no longer has a great labor savings as in the past in high tech as it has become so automated. We can get that business back on American soil providing local jobs and Property taxes and corporate taxes. We won't compete with toys, and small appliances as those are still labor intensive industries. If we just halve the trade deficit with them would be a boom to the US economy. And the stuff that is needed for our economy- wonderful make it here. If America NEEDS something it should be made here as it then is a national strategic material as Energy.
How does GM closing US factories and firing American workers, moving production to china and importing cars back to America make this country stronger? The answer is that it doesnt Thats just a damn lie that globalists cling to as they advance their agenda
Not so Mercantilism - and any educated liberal should know this - mercantilism is where foreign countries seek to destroy rival producers in other countries with the goal of economic domination of the other country Its a form of war without military conflict Protectionism DOES NOT equal mercantilism
A response to Chinese tariffs on american goods that have existed for the last 25 years. As nations start to industrialize they need tariffs to keep out foreign competition. They tax the products heavily so that they are too costly for thier own citizens and become export driven economy. Most trading nations recognize this and allow it as the initial profits to be made are enticing as a whole new market opens for them. But those nations act that way with the assumption as the native economy grows that nation will cut back on exports and reduce the tariffs so that the trading companies items can be sold to the native population. China has never done that and still keep in place those original tariffs that were "allowed" in a free trade world to open that economy. We are now Addicted to a $15 toaster/coffee maker.
As addicted as the chinese were to british opium in the mid 1800s China had to kick the habit of addictive drugs and we have to kick the habit of cheap imprted junk at the Dollar Store
most car here are manufacture here. it cost a lot to transport auto from china to US. GM closing factory are due to many reason, one of them is raising steel/aluminum cost, and that's due to tariff. when Bush was POTUS he did the same on metal, the end result is 200k job lost, he later retract the tariff.
If that were true china would make everything in America The fact is that transportation is very cheap Making stuff in china is cheap because of the labor and lax environmental regulations GM is about to lose its idenity as an American company and fall under the control pf china
