Sedans still sell better in Europe, and China, better than they do in the US, and at this point the sales numbers show that the mix is still slightly in sedans advantage in both locations. That said, the only thing any manufacturer can do is try to extrapolate from those numbers with the trends are, and the trends are leaning toward more SUV and crossover sales, with a corresponding Dippin sedans. The thing is here in the United States, and Canada, sedan sales are plummeting. There's no other way to put it. The only way that sedans are moving in this country, even when there are product like the Chevy Malibu, and the Ford Fusion, that are pretty competitive with their Japanese counterparts, is with a lot of incentive dollars on the hood. You can go to Ford's website, or Chevrolet's website, and do a little digging around and you'll see that sedans have far more incentives on them then SUVs and crossovers.

It's simple. They make nearly twice as much money on a Silverado that they make on a Cruze.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! That's exactly what the situation is. GM makes a hell of a lot more money on a Silverado than a Crude. Hell, the make, more than on a Cadillac, except for the Escalade.

Only as long as gas prices are low

If the price spikes again the dealers wont be aboe to give the big iron away

And GM will flood the US with chinese imports

Either way, its still a big gamble for both Ford and GM to say adios completely to smaller vehicles. Next time gas prices jump to nearly or at three bucks a gallon, the consumer is going to be ditching SUVs for hatchbacks and the like. GM could kill the Cruze, but they needed to hang onto the Volt for consumers making their transition from all-gas to electric, without going all-electric like the Nissan Leaf or a Tesla. People still need to commute, and SUV's are not commuter-friendly vehicles nor are trucks gas-wise. If Japanese and German automakers were doing what Ford and GM are doing, it wouldn't' raise red flags. But they're not, at most Toyota is simply weighing their options. I still see plenty of sedans and hatchbacks on the road here, so its quite obvious that consumers aren't making a big merge toward gas guzzlers as Ford and GM are assuming they are.

Irrelevant to the point that American cars are now more expensive because they can not buy cheap metal, because of the US government put taxes on them. "Go buy American"... yeah.. Joe the plumber gets to buy an American car whose more expensive because the US government taxation.

One, another gas price spike is unlikely, given the amount of tracking in the U.S. Two, a lot of plug in hybrids are on the way, from GM, Ford, & Chrysler

Bottom line is that for the Detroit Three, sedan sales have cratered. And look up the sales figures before you pass judgement. It's happening to all the automakers.

Over 250,000 units a year, all luxury cars, is a token few. Idiotic comment.

Joe the Plummer pays $200 more the car

and Pete the factory worker gets to keep his job instead of collecting welfare paid for by Joe

Plus our biggest rival has less power over the US conomy

This is a geo political as well as an economic issue

Toyota is considering thinning their car offering, although no where near as drastic. Honda is bring back the Passport SUV, sized between the CRV and the Pilot. CRV now outsells the Civic.

Ford Explorer Police Utility is the best selling police car in America, vastly out selling the Taurus Police Interceptor. The Explorer Police Interceptor Utility sells so well, Dodge is bringing out a Durango police utility. GM's only real offering is the Tahoe, as they dropped the Australian made Caprice. They dropped their police sedan offerings.

Go to a BMW or Mercedes dealer and see what's on the lots - SUV's vastly outnumber sedans.

Outside of SUV's, Toyota best sellibg pick up is the Tacoma, Nissan well with the Frontier and Honda does well with the Ridgeline. And all three sell a lot of SUV's.

90% of GM stock is held by Americans amd you claim GM works China? Even by Texas standards, you're seriously delusional.

The four largest exporters of vehicles to China, from the US, are BMW, GM, Mercedes, and Chrysler. I believe in that order.

According to my info GM imports only a small fracton of the cars going to china

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2018/04/04/us-china-exports-tariffs-trade-war/485006002/

German automakers export 115,300 vehicles from the U.S. to China annually, while U.S. automakers other than Tesla export only 28,819, according to Evercore ISI analysts.

However I’m quoting a lib journalist at USAToday so consider the source

Could be accurate. Hard to find exact numbers, even in individual auto makers annual reports. I know Cadillac CT-6's go to China as does Lincoln Continental's (hell, Continental was designed with China in mind), and Mustang's. BMW and Mercedes export SUV's from the U.S.

So basically you agree that Joe the Plumber becomes a victim of the taxes that Trump installed.
And it's not just a car. Anything where Joe the Plumber buys with metal in it,... has become more expensive.

And the point is... since all them cars and parts and whatever metal are more expensive when the US makes them, means... CHINA doesn't need to put up tariffs against those US products. Get it? And it's not just China, it's everybody else as well. So them "ha ha, we're putting up tariffs"... it's just boomeranging back.

If you want to look at it that way

But a big part of the cost of the car is government mandates that automakers must comply with and the consumer have to pay for

You seem to not care that America has a $350 bil trade deficit with china

But that is a serious problem
