Senate passes sweeping criminal justice reform bill Excerpt from link: Dec. 19, 2018 / 2:02 AM GMT / Updated 12:22 PM GMT By Rebecca Shabad and Phil Helsel WASHINGTON — The Senate passed a huge criminal law reform bill on Tuesday night, seizing on bipartisan support for the broadest set of changes to federal crime statutes in a generation. A rare coalition of conservatives, liberals, activists, prosecutors and defense attorneys — spanning the political spectrum — pushed senators to pass the "First Step Act" by a final vote of 87-12. This bill is a big deal. It's expected to pass the House and be signed into law by the President. Where is the left's praise for this bill pushed by the President?
I looked and didn't see any thread on the topic. I guess it's sexier to beat on each other over letters of intent, and whether Cohen and Comey are virtuous patriots.
thanks for posting it. I agree, too much agreement is bad for ratings. Must have Anger and Confrontation!
I agree. However, reports show that without the President and specifically Jared Kushner, the Bill might not have passed. Don't take my word for it. Kushner Earns Praise for Support of Criminal Justice Reform Allies and opponents alike praise Kushner's efforts for criminal justice reform bill. Durbin: Kushner 'very important partner' in passing criminal justice reform bill
Glad Kushner was able to talk sense into the Republicans who were throwing it p Roadblocks. Hope the states now follow suit since this only affects 10% of our prison system.
Many states already have. California being one. The silence from the left on the matter is not surprising, under the current marching orders......
You made a thread on the topic and of the six unique individuals who have responded - all with praise by the way - are five posters who are from the left and you. I will add my applause for the passage of this bill.
Where's the condemnation for those on right who are bashing this bill being pushed by the President? Senator Cotton: "If anything, we have an under-incarceration problem."

Will it finally become a reality, or is there still resistance to what is right and what the American people obviously want?
Man, did you get burned on that... first 3 posts were all approvals for the bill.... Put me down for a 4th, or whatever it's up to now...LMAO... P.S. Where was YOUR thread when Mitchy the Kid was holding this up from a vote for no apparent reason?? I made one, but it didn't get much traction..
Damn, I didn't read this through before I made the same point... My bad and solid from you, my friend! I guess when something that obvious is put on a tee, several of us will have to take some swings...
Yeah, I watched that interview.... Durbin threw some MAJOR shade when he said 'Because of his own family experience, he's wanted prison reform for a long time'.... said with a straight face too... that guy is a political veteran... Durbin was also asked if Kushner was the key to getting the gang of 8 bill on immigration moving again. "I wouldn't presume it." Kushner is a very limited trick pony, but salute for this one obvious result of his in 23 months...
Law abiding folk need to increase their homeowners insurance for burglary. This has been tried in California and it had led to a never ending supply of street urchins roaming the streets at night looking for stuff to steal. They are everywhere in So. Cal.
All 49 Democrats voted in favor of the bill, and 12 Republicans voted against it. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) was absent. The Republicans who voted against the bill were Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), John Kennedy (R-La.), Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) and John Barrasso (R-Wyo.). Interesting... a few of the Usual Suspects (Cotton, Kennedy, Wyoming), but a few of the "seemingly" more moderate folks like Murkowski, Rubio and Sasse.... “While this Sentencing Reduction Bill does some good things for nonviolent inmates, as written it will also release thousands of violent felons very early,” Sasse said. “That’s a grave mistake that will hurt innocent Americans. Good intentions are not enough.” But in a brief statement Tuesday night, Rubio vaguely said the bill "did not address serious concerns raised by local law enforcement, federal prosecutors and constituents in Florida about the sentencing reforms in this bill."
What you failed to notice MrTLegal, is that, to my knowledge at the time I created the OP, no one had created a thread on the subject. It had been something like 20 hours since the historic vote. That silence left me to ask the question.
I leave Republican bashing to Progressives like yourself. It seems to feed a burning in the soul for such types. To the point, the comments from Cotton do have some merit. What elements of his comments would you bash?
the reform is to let more criminals out there being let out because of over crowded prisons only . not a good bill we need more tougher prisons
Man do you Progressives have trouble with the point. It had been something like 20 hours since the vote took place, and to my knowledge, not a single liberal progressive activist poster here had made a thread on the subject. A rather historic vote and result, credited to Kushner and the President. Begs the question why no thread, when all it takes is a sneeze from the President and Progs start creating threads.
