You can call me one, but Reps have their own brand of overreach that prevents me from being one. I do support gun rights for gay married couples!
Per reports the teachers union and school district are close to an agreement and will hopefully end the strike this weekend.
The cost of teaching the children of illegal aliens is significant, but this won't be discussed: Then there are those enormous unfunded teacher pensions, these won't be discussed either.
Interesting data, Plus Ultra And, if true, portray a state direction of subsidized housing/ universal healthcare/ free education thru community college, the list goes on. Look to Sweden as the model being implemented in California. BTW, Sweden is 21st in world economies well below California.
Sweden is often touted as the model, but it is far from socialist. Generous social spending is not socialism and only sustainable with a prosperous economy, Sweden has moved on since the sixties, privatized mass transit, education and even healthcare. It is a very socially cohesive country with a strong work ethic. While California has a prosperous economy, this is contingent on a fiscal policy that promotes the generation of wealth. California is much more diverse with a variety of competing communities that have varying 'work-ethics' and very little social cohesion. If California raises its taxes too high, wealth generators will easily opt for other jurisdictions (many already are).
The teachers union is losing their monopoly and they are desperate. My sons charter school is not affected by this strike. We need more competition and fewer rubber room teachers.
"The Nordic model refers to the economic and social policies common to the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Sweden). This includes a comprehensive welfare state and collective bargaining at the national level with a high percentage of the workforce unionized while being based on the economic foundations of free market capitalism." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordic_model
Mayor Garcetti just announced the agreement between the teacher's union and school district pending final vote from teachers.
The tentative deal provides a 6% salary raise (3% for last year and 3% for this year), a reduction in class size over the next 4 years to reach levels in the previous contract. It was also agreed to designate 30 "community schools" which would provide social services for students' family and to eliminate random searches of high schoolers in a couple dozen more schools. No mention of those additional nurses.
The ideal model of what a school can become was promoted by governor Schwarzenegger [Republican btw]. Open early and close late so that before/ after school activities [sports/ tutoring/ meals] can assist working parents. Basically 6AM-6PM. Counseling services are vital and greatly assist teacher engaged in lessons. Programs funded by the county mental health department place behaviorists in class to deal with agitated/ emotionally disturbed/ distracted pupils. If not an RN at least a LVN needs to be placed in all schools over 250 students. All these goals are appropriate/ necessary and doable.
No, I think we'd need more than what that Republican governor (Schwartzenegger) promoted; guidance counselors (properly vetted) to tell the kids how to deal with all these "triggerings", about "alternative lifestyle choices", on "white privilege", all about bullying. Ending the support at 6 PM would discriminate against those hard-working (though non-taxpaying) parents who need to work longer to earn their inevitably inadequate wages, this entails also providing the adequate staff to deal with applications for whatever public assistance and the relevant affirmative action guidelines for everything from subsidized housing to college scholarships. I think this is what is meant by that reference to "30 community centers" in the still to be confirmed proposal by Mr. Garcetti.
Glad the teachers prevailed. This is giving notice to Sacramento; a statewide strike would cripple California. Nurses in each school, 4 less pupils per class and more counselors/ behaviorists/ psychiatric support. Because prop 13 severely limits taxes on homeowners the state is considering raising taxes on businesses instead.
