Sweden has claimed a major development in fighter technology. What do you think? https://amp.businessinsider.com/swe...r-jet-killer-and-stealth-is-irrelevant-2019-2
Well since AOC is about to get rid of all of our airplanes in the US that means Sweden could beat us with a bi-plane. So this is overkill.
Our Australian government recently bought 100 F35s from the US. Ive read that they are a piece of sh1t....would be interested in US opinions.....
US fighters don't solely depend on stealth tech, they also have their own electronic warfare systems. The F22 has the AN/ALR-94. So that tells you the US uses a multi layered approach. I'd like to see a comparison of their electronic warfare system vs other systems.
On a side note Ive just finished reading "New Confessions of an Economic Hitman" which I recommend to everyone...it seems that perhaps an EHM talked to our politicians, saddled them with the debt, and now the technology and the expertise to keep the planes in the air is probably supplied by...you guessed it.... the American experts who are probably living over here at Australias expense, and being paid handsomely to keep them flying....they reckon there's a sucker born every minute....
The F35 is a Jack of all trades and a master of none. There are better aircraft available for each of the missions it does, but no single aircraft in the world can accomplish all of the types of missions the F35 can do. To me, the F35 is an overpriced and over complicated workhorse type aircraft.
Full electronic warfare capabilities won't be known for decades. The f22 is an amazing aircraft though.
hmmm...The Jet That Kicked the Russian's Butts. Absolutely deadly in air-to-air but totally desperate just to have someone call it pretty. Years ago one wag where I live had a Saab Sonnet. It had a bumper sticker reading "Made in Der Black Forest, by Der Elves
It seems we live in an age where new inventions or advanced warfare tools can be made obsolete overnight. My fear is that foe like Russia or China even Oran at a pinch could come up with a weapon that could out perform, out evade, out jam, out smart all others. Eg they might not need to find ways to sink a carrier- just disable every plane on it or scramble its electronics in the air...checkmate.
Don't sleep on the Swedes. They're going to be one of the more powerful members of the coalition against the German-Russian alliance going forward. And they have an advantage, one that is shared by Russia, they get to prepare almost entirely for a war against a single power. This allows a kind of focus and efficiency that we Americans aren't able to attain.
Like most combat aircraft, the Saab's EW suite makes it harder for other aircraft to lock onto them with radar - and while that is all well and good, it doesn't do anything to make it easier to lock on to opposing aircraft - while technically part of EW, that capability is built into the fire control system. The text of the attached article seems to focus on the ability of the Saab to remain unseen and sneak up on another aircraft; if you cannot see the F22/35, you can't sneak up on it.
I've watched the Grippen in an airshow and it looks a heck of an aircraft. But I can't escape from the feeling that this article and the SAF spokesman's waffle is more about a Swedish sales pitch than anything else.
They have a reputation of being a "flying lemon". I read awhile back an absolutely excoriating report by one of the designers of the F-35; he had nothing good to say about it. His conclusion was that it was simply payola time.
I'm simply a military history buff and no expert on weapon systems, so this is just my humble opinion, the F-35 was expected to replace several different aircraft, the A-10 and Harrier and perhaps a couple others. And they expected to do this with the same basic air frame. Well, you know what they say about a jack of all trades and maybe a single air frame is just not able to do all these jobs as well as specialized type planes.
I think I'm right in saying that it was the F35 which gave birth to the sardonic question 'How do you acquire an F35?' and the answer was 'Buy a piece of land in Germany.'
