I’ve included all the candidates that we know for sure, but I included Biden. Do any of these candidates have any crossover appeal in your opinion? I didn’t vote in 2016, because I considered the election a game of Russian roulette, but with two bullets. Do you think any of the candidates can get votes from independents, and never Trump republicans? Personally, I’ve been paying attention to Gabbard, and Yang. Both candidates are longshots, but if they get nominated, I’d be very tempted to vote democrat for the first time in my adult life. Mods please move this to Opinion.
If you are talking about a Dem candidate versus Trump, yes, a certain cross-over vote from the Republicans is inevitable.
Sanders is the only Dem I'd even remotely consider crossing over from the left to vote for, but he'd have to run on a non-Dem line in my state, as after 2016's criminal acts by the Dems, I'll never vote Democrat again.
I doubt it and it does not even matter who they nominate, a democratic prez will be beholden to the insane, violent, PC-obsessed, socialist wing of the party, just like Pelosi and Schumer are. When Pelosi sounds "moderate" and she is still overruled by the progressive/socialist mob, you know what's coming if a democratic president is elected, whoever he/she might be. On the other hand, lots of people refrained from voting for Trump in 2016 heeding the MSM's "economic disasters, catastrophes, wars, Nazis freely roaming our streets if Trump is elected" prophecies. Now that they know that the end of the world has been indefinitely postponed, Trump will get a substantial influx of new voters.
Fear not: the Democrats are still the OTHER party of perpetual criminal conservative corruption and death. But fear this: a ham sandwich - and even elderly Bernie - could beat Trump next year, especially as he appears to have thrown us into recession late last year.
Gabbard possibly, none of the others. Gabbard is unelectable due to 1. No machine backing, 2. Too moderate for the current extreme progressive iteration of the Democratic Party, 3. Hawaii. If Trump maintains the extremely high approval ratings among GOP voters, no crossover there. IMO Trump will himself benefit from lots of crossover in the center, but will it be enough to counter the inevitable Democrat voting fraud in corrupt blue population bastions? Stay tuned.
I'm one of those who voted third party in 2016 because of my disdain for both major party candidates. One of 9 million voters who voted third party against both Trump and Clinton. Who could attract the independent voter? In my opinion Biden, Hickenlooper, Klobuchar for sure. I don't think Warren could, she'd be more like a Hillary Clinton type candidate, Sanders, I'm not sure. The rest I really don't know enough to come to an opinion either way. I add this, in 2016 42% of independents voted for Clinton, 12% voted for third party candidates because they detested both Trump and Clinton. That's 54% of independents voting against Trump. I'm sure those 12% of independents hadn't changed their minds on Trump. With the right candidate, those 12% of independents who voted against both major party candidate are ripe for the Democratic Party's taking. The Democratic Party is the larger of the two major parties, if they can win the independent vote, the election is theirs. All depends on whom they nominate. Will the Democrats blow 2020 like they blew 2016 by nominating a candidate as disliked by America as a whole as Trump was and is?
John Delaney. Saw him on tv. Impressive. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell as a donk as he's a capitalist / free marketeer moderate. From wikipedia: Since his election to Congress, Delaney introduced legislation to end partisan gerrymandering. The Open Our Democracy Act of 2017 would appoint independent redistricting commissions nationwide to end partisan gerrymandering, make Election Day a federal holiday and create an open top-two primary system.[28] Delaney was ranked as the 53rd most bipartisan member of the U.S. House of Representatives during the 114th United States Congress (and the most bipartisan member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland) in the Bipartisan Index created by The Lugar Center and the McCourt School of Public Policy that ranks members of the United States Congress by their degree of bipartisanship (by measuring the frequency each member's bills attract co-sponsors from the opposite party and each member's co-sponsorship of bills by members of the opposite party).[29] In 2015, a similar ranking by the nonpartisan site GovTrack ranked Delaney third highest for bipartisanship among all House Democrats.[30] In much of the western portion of the district, Delaney was the only elected Democrat above the county level.
If there were free markets I could grow industrial hemp on my farm yet it is illegal to grow it without a permit in Missouri and there are only two permits allowed, hardly a free market...More like govt. controlled monopolies..
In order to be a leftist crossover candidate you need a fair amount of natural charisma and a following and for the leftist-allied Mainstream Media to back you to the very hilt no matter what. Of the ones who've announced only Warren and Biden and Sanders have any of those elements in their favor and at that it is mostly the MSM saying, "This person is fantastic!" They tried that with Hillary Clinton in 2016, however, and the nation did not . . . bite.
They tried polishing the turd with Clinton, that’s for sure. Hillary had allot of baggage, and so do some of the current candidates. But, not all of them are going to be as terrible as Hillary.
In truth I don't expect any of the final three or final two to be as over all bad as Hillary was. But then again Hillary was very obviously physically too ill to run for the presidency and everyone with an operational intellect knew it at the time via observation and some independent study. The MSM, however, fell all over themselves spinning and covering for her in that respect; essentially and deliberately LYING to the nation . . . just like good little politically loyal leftists.
Funny, I thought we could only indict ham sandwiches... didn't know we could vote for them... Not that I have any control over this, not being a Democrat, but I think a Biden/Amy ticket would be a solid choice for America and would have solid crossover appeal (compared to a Booker or Harris or Bernie)... Prefer that Joey indicates he's only going to run for 1 term, then turn the wheel over to our first woman prez....
Klobuchar is interesting because she is from a solid midwest state. she looks like a tough campaigner. She could take Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and most of the midwest and Great Plains States. That's a lot of red. and take that from Trump and it's party over. Negative is bad staff reports of abuse. Harris is attractive, smart, experienced, and tough but she's from the bluest of blue states - another east/west candidate. Biden has great middle class and labor appeal but his age is against him. Klobuchar and Harris? Wow, who would want to take that on?
I think Klobuchar makes sense from the electoral college stand point. One needs to remember that Trump came within 1.5 points of adding Minnesota to Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Klobuchar would make sure those formerly blue wall states stay blue. Just ensuring those four states along with the one's Hillary would ensure a win for her. Harris from the west coast might not be as attractive to midwesterners as one of their one.
Amy could make sense, EXCEPT: I can't conceive of a scenario where she can eclipse Biden, Bernie, Beto, and Harris The Devil is in the Details.
Agree. Harris alone could be seen as a Hillary clone. Klobuchar could ignore the coast then focus on the south and midwest. Who would be that strong southern hand? Beto?
You're probably right. Not leftist enough to win in the very progressive Democratic primaries. But probably a winner in the general if she could get that far.
I love the huge dimocratic field. The Republicans have been hurt by this in the last two elections. The more you have to say during the primary, the more you're going to expose yourself to potential criticism. It was a two horse race in 2016. Bernie will have to act even more whacked out, mainline dims will have to act crazier, it'll be glorious.
