Stews are great for low income family since you can make do with lesser cut of meats or even go all veggies. Same for soups. Pre WW2, those were the main way to feed your family were I'm from.

Not exactly, they are getting obese on taxpayer's dollars. So taxpayers are as much too blame for the obesity of the poor as the poor themselves.
