Nobody is going to intentionally build affordable housing for at risk populations for profit. Its a loser. Cities and counties have to require a few units of each new apartment and the old complexes that get permits renewed, be designated as indigent housing units and subsidize their rental accordingly, that way none do not bare the same market burden and we do not get as much congregated on 'bad side of the tracks'. Lets say you intend to build a complex of condos on a nice piece of property in Miami. If you are building 35 units, two of them will be designated for low income. You do not have to build them to match those gorgeous penthouses you expect to get 3 thousand a month for, but you have to build something designed for low income residents, in order to get your permits.
I see homeless young people here with cardboard signs asking for weed. Unbelievable. (Hey, at least they're being honest, I guess)
If they make enough money to maintain that habit, I don't know why they are homeless. I guess being high is more important.
It's the weather and always has been. They can survive in warm weather more easily. You and your masters.
Just in case anyone is wondering what the weather is like where these pictures are taken, the Winters are long and cold but the temperatures do not drop too low, only slightly below freezing for just a few nights in a row. The Winters are also very often wet and incessantly rainy. Very uncomfortable and unpleasant for the homeless, but not likely to flat out kill them.
perhaps something along those lines might made sense if done properly. We have a development coming near me with 6,000 units, crazy huge amount IMO, but apparently there is a demand or else it wouldn't be breaking ground now. It would make sense for 50-100 to be smaller, cheaper versions of the standard unit.
Here's the problem with my idea. My guess is that that 'huge development', is not necessarily near any public transportation routs with bus passes. these same at- risk people are not people who will ever retain a job requiring a reliable car, car insurance, gas and maintenance costs. They need access to a bus system or employment and services in walking distance. The local food banks, the thrift shops, even the local AA meetings and health or drug clinics are in the urban centers not on the outskirts, or suburbs. Its good for our cities and our homeless to disperse low income housing rather than concentrate it, but we are not dispersing access to what these people really need along with the housing.
well in this example its pretty much within walking distance to most of those, but that's not always the case. Its just off the main drag in the center of town, and since the center of town has semi fallen apart in the last 2 decades, all that crap is right there. Actually the only reason I remember the unit count is because we were talking about the fact that that was a busy area already with alot of traffic congestion and the last thing they need is more dam apartment/condos clogging things up. Funny that we (both) assume that the suburbs don't need bus stops, food banks, thrift shops, AA meetings and drug clinics. I live in the burbs in the corner of town and we have none of that and somehow manage just fine, if anything its the list above that motivated me to move to the outskirts I picked my zip code 24 years ago because I had a 1 yr old kid and that particular area had great public schools, and my old zip code had crappy schools.
That's part of the reason for the housing shortages. There actually are still large rural areas further out, but there's not much out there. Many of the people out there are kind of poor, and the job opportunities for young people or old people can be kind of hard to come by. The city here has a small metropolitan city area, which attracts people. But unfortunately those sprawling suburbs are growing much faster than that original small metropolitan city core. I think many of those thrift shops are going out of business because the increased cost of rents is driving them out. The city does have an excellent public transportation system, and out in those rural areas further out there is basically no public transportation system. Most of the businesses in the area are very reluctant to hire an applicant without recent job experience. Especially the corporate owned businesses.
Cheaper and great quality in California and Nevada. Still a little steep, though. I believe that you can grow your own, + or - twenty plants in Colorado and maybe in Nevada.
Well no, I learned it from life. You send the money in the necessities first. It's really common sense.
Wrong again! This is the result of the FAILED fiscal malfeasance policies of the GOP and their Wall Street Casino Bosses who are depriving hardworking Americans of jobs that pay living wages and benefits. If there are drug users they are probably victims of the GOP/Big Phama Opioid crisis that was promoted to INCREASE Wall Street Casino PROFITS at the expense of We the People. Now returning to the OP. What human rights are being violated by this enclosure? Are these unfortunate people prevented from coming and going? Are they forced to remain against their will?
I love how you put all these problems on the GOP when every single donor you are talking about gives equally, and man times more to democrats.
Well, if you think the left only gets their donations from welfare recipients and union bosses, then I am sorry that you can't be more objective and completely blinded by partisan party propaganda.
The left's failed policies? Tent cities first appeared during the Republican economic collapse of 2008. Now we have a vast and growing wealth gap between high tech workers, and pretty much everyone else. People at google, Microsoft, amazon and the like, are making up to 200K a year, with half the city living on minimum wage - $30K [2.5K a month gross] or less. In Seattle, a small apartment [800 square feet] can cost between 2K and 5K a month. Do the math. This problem is a direct result of a free market. There a thousand variables but you can't avoid the fundamental math.
