Just my first day on here but I find the quality of the threads to be quite disappointing...well I will hang for a lil while since I have been banned elsewhere. What topics should I avoid?...i was informed this was a conservative board but it does not appear from what I have read that is the case. Mod edit/#8
This forum is not an echo chamber for partisan ideologues, but partisan ideologues are welcome to share their opinions and engage their political opponents. Members of PF enjoy doing that - it's not for everyone.
Welcome. This is a board that welcomes all political views. The liberals think this is a conservative board. Conservatives think this is a liberal board. It's pretty balanced, although at times it's more one way than at other times. Stay on, if you like to discuss, rather than just cheer on your own side. Read the rules (bottom right of each page), and avoid commenting on other message boards by name.
You have the PF confused with the PF's sister forum which is basically a conservative forum that liberals refuse to participate in.
From what I have discovered there are few if any topics that are not allowed, that stated, my advice is if you think something you wish to discuss might be taboo, simply open a off forum conversation with a Mod before posting it, the Mods here are very light touch and helpful, when I first landed here I stepped over the line a number of times and was basically advised by one of the Mods to not repeat what I did wrong, versus some forums where I would have been given a week or so vacation, if not outright banned. And like all forums never forget moderation is not censorship, you do not have a First Amendment right to post here, the only person who does have that right is the owner of the forum, that's just the way the First works. Go forth and have fun, but if you get into a hot button discussion make sure you have your fire retardant clothing on, this is not an echo chamber, opinions run deep and people here are passionate about their opinions, which is good as it never gets boring.
Oh so true, so true, the forum is rather balanced, but many here like I, consider their opinions to be gospel. Not to be a critic, but one would think in a political forum where passions tend to get hot, the rules would be top and center, maybe even as a flashing neon sign.
You must be one of those people who just accepts the rules and conditions without reading. That said, mods here can be very chill.
The forum is full of people that think the forum is conservative. The forum is full of people that think the forum is liberal. Probably means it is pretty open. Don't call people names. Don't harass posters and you will probably be OK. Read the rules. If you get banned then it is on you. Welcome.
I suppose anybody can have their opinion on what constitutes "balanced" as opposed to "leaning" (Left or Right). At any "political" forum (and just speaking generally and not referring to PF, but just speaking "generally")... ...One of the first metrics (in judging the "lean" of a forum) is how many threads on the first page of Current Events are sourced by RW Comedy Propaganda Machines (Like Breitbart, Etc.)... ...And, whether it is always the same group of people going around in circles playing the "you like mine/I'll like yours" game. And, once again, I am not speaking about PF (specifically), I am only speaking in "general terms" in metrics that can be used to judge any social media site. Whether or not the following GENERAL STATEMENT (that defines a well-accepted metric determining political "lean" on social media sites) applies to PF, is a matter of individual opinion. ...One of the first metrics (in judging the "lean" of a forum) is how many threads on the first page of Current Events are sourced by RW Comedy Propaganda Machines (Like Breitbart, Etc.)... ...And, whether it is always the same group of people going around in circles playing the "you like mine/I'll like yours" game. __________ Welcome to PF, and I hope you enjoy your time here.
This is a very good forum. One of the best, if not the best, I've seen. It's a good one because there are some very high-quality people here, on both the Right and the Left, and the rest of us benefit from their posts. Of course, there are plenty of threads, and diversions of threads, where you find a long list of back-and-forth insults, just a waste of space. That means that some thoughtful exchange of views gets pushed back into the obscurity of preceding pages ... and how many of us start from page 1, and go forward to page 12? But I suppose that's inevitable. Threads to avoid are probably these: President Trump's latest pronouncements or actions. What more can be said here? Threads which are basically a reference to some news event which will give pleasure and confirmation to one side, and consternation to another. For example: Muslim fanatic murders ten Christians. Or Christian fanatic murders ten Muslims. The problem is, some of the best discussions tend to be thread diversions (or 'sidelines' as someone called them) in the middle of another, maybe trivial topic. |You might discover these just be accident. It would be nice if there were some way of signalling the existence of these. Some examples: discussions of 'feasible socialism' by Marxists who eschew the classical Marxist model of centralized state ownership of the economy, but who remain faithful to the ideals of socialism. Or discussions about American foreign policy -- in particular, the less creditable events in our history, like My Lai. We've got a number of people who actually have real-world experience of, say, Vietnam; others who are familiar in depth with American, and other, history. Sometimes we get Germans, Russians, Iranians, Australians, contributing their views. I personally have learned a lot about weapons and ammunition from people who obviously know what they're talking about, on one thread that started out with the usual back-and-forth about gun control.
