Everyone’s new soccer hero Megan Rapinoe is actually kind of awful

Its no wonder professional soccer has never caught on in the US. Everybody finally pays attention because its the World Cup and we're in the finals. Then one flamer with purple hair ruins it for her team... and the sport.

Oh, boo hoo. Heroes come in many colors and can have many definitions. Your narrow definition of what does, or doesn't, constitute a "hero" is duly noted. Rapinoe is certainly a "hero" in the eyes of my soccer obsessed teenage daughter. And, lucky for her, she's never experienced war outside of what I have told her about my time in the ME. So, while she may acknowledge that a man like Bellavia could be a "hero", he certainly isn't hers. As her father I am perfectly fine with that.

On a similar note, three years ago I had to explain to my then pre-teen daughter why a thrice married man, who bragged about himself grabbing women's vagina's without their consent, and murdering people in cold blood, was now the President of the United States. That was an awkward conversation. Today, perhaps because of Rapinoe, she's asking tougher questions regarding Trump's behavior, and is well on her way to concluding that he is a Grade-A @sshole. Again, I am perfectly fine with that as well.

 

Nice job brainwashing your daughter. When she starts looking for a job she'll appreciate the lowest unemployment in 50 years.

Neither one of you excel at reading comprehension. Which explains a lot, actually. Nowhere in my post did I come anywhere near stating that I think Rapinoe is a hero. My daughter, on the other hand, has a distinctly different criteria for determining who is, or isn't, a hero to her.

 

Professional soccer doesn't catch on because the players largely suck compared to those in other countries. That is because development programs stop very early and not a lot of emphasis is put into developing young talent. If people in America could go see players like Ronaldo and Mesi play, then the stadiums would be more than 1/3 full. It has nothing to do with the ignorant **** you just spewed.

 

If by "brainwashing" you mean providing her with factual information and allowing her to form a critical and reasoned opinion? I'm convinced that you don't actually know what "brainwashing" is.

Perhaps you should explain to her that just because a person excels at particular skill and becomes a millionaire because of that skill, that does not make them a hero. Explain to her that a more valid metric of heroism is what a person is willing to sacrifice for others. When the wolves are at the door, when the country's very existence is at stake, it is people like Bellavia that will determine the survival of your country and possibly yourself and your loved ones. Tell her the reason that people like Rapinoe can take a crap on the American flag is because people like Jason Dunham purchased that privilege for them with their lives.

Having committed my fair share of mayhem against my fellow humans courtesy of the US government, it will not be me to glorify war to my daughter. The Right holds up almost exclusively "heroes" from the battlefield. Which goes to prove in my eyes that you are the party of War. I don't buy in to that based solely on my personal observations of war. It isn't glorious, and it isn't a movie.

My personal heroes have always been explorers and scientists. Number One on my list is Neil Armstrong, who I had the honor of meeting while serving in the Air Force, and I now encourage both my children to seek out role models who conform to their own interests, regardless of what flag they flew.

Patriotism and Heroism are not mutually exclusive. You can have one without the other.

 

Overpaid to kick balls and cant even figure out how to be a good employee.
