The USA was colonized the same way many other lands in the world were colonized. Europeans arrived (usually under the guise of being missionaries, but not always), gained the trust of the native peoples, and the next thing you know the Europeans proclaimed themselves the owners of everything the natives once had. They would take the natural resources, the land, spread diseases among the natives that they had no immunity for and sometimes try to enslave the natives. If enslaving the natives didn't work, no problem. Just import some Africans and enslave them for a couple hundred years. So, there you have it---a quick summary of European colonization. Does anyone want to add anything? Did I forget something?
I believe I have already discussed this matter many times on this forum and if you are interested in my views you are free to look them up. This thread has been created endless of times and the matter has been touched upon in other threads countless of times. I should have at least 10 posts on it. Anyways, the subject is unoriginal, overdone and boring. Additionally, it is not even clear what it is you want us to discuss.
I want to discuss how America was colonized. There was a lively conversation about it in the "Reparations for Slavery" thread, so I thought I'd move that conversation to a new thread. Don't you think our US history is fascinating?
Something to keep in perspective, the number of native peoples living there at that time was a tiny number compared to just the amount of immigration happening today. So I believe in some way, that argument is a fallacy of extremes. We need to have a grasp on the actual numbers to be able to put things in perspective, and make a valid comparison. Conversely, we can also turn your argument around and say that, if the way of life of the natives was irreversibly altered in a negative way by the arrival of newcomers, maybe we should learn a lesson from that, and not have a repeat.
The Royal Proclamation of 1763 gave Native Americans the western territory and white colonists were prohibited from crossing the Appalachian Mountains. Any travel or settlement beyond the mountains was illegal. Without America's independence, Native Americans would have owned the vast territory including California, Nevada and New Mexico, while American colonists were confined to the Thirteen Colonies. This shows the British really cared about Indians and the stereotype about evil white colonists who enslaved the natives is not really accurate.
Unlikely, Spain would have taken it, and in fact did claim it. France claimed the entire Mississippi River.
Yes, and at one point the British were paying the natives for white scalps. (During the American Revolutionary War)
Unlikely the colonies were colonies but when did the British play nice with non-white inferiors as many saw them India was exploited, slavery once in place was brutally implemented and if they found the natives in the way of wealth they often stepped on them just well would try other things in some cases less extreme than what the Americans did. But it would depend on resistance and trade income if the trade was good and the natives in the Americas were able to fight hard enough to make alternatives far less appealing the British likely would have been lighter handed. On the other hand the colonists did expand even without permission of the crown and had a growing population war and pushing the natives out of land would have been likely and once they found gold and silver lodes good luck keeping the crown out.
Yeah. A couple of small matters. Human sacrifice, cannibalism Stone age technology and a life expectancy of about 35. All of which were taen care of by the Europeans Contrary to popular belief, the Native Americans were not 'Noble Savages', they were just savage. They had no respect for the land other than what they could gain from it. Not saying the Europeans were better, but they were no worse and in many ways improvedt the lives of the natives.
Sorry. You can't justify what was done to Native Americans anymore than you can justify what was done to the enslaved Africans. Wrong is wrong!
Really? They (and your ancestors) reaped some benefit from the Whites. Not just technologies, but philosophy as well. Your statement 'wrong is wrong', for example, comes from western thought. the Native Americans thought about right and wrong along tribal lines. Your ideas about racism come from the same source. Both Native Americans and Africans were unabashedly racist, even against others of the same race if their tribe differed.
such a great topic to bring up to keep white americans from pretending they are somehow a moral authority on....anything really. what to add, hmmmm. Columbus' family, the guy who supposedly founded america was a marrano (secret convert to judaism), were slavers. so any white folk who try to say that a black man was the first person to own a slave in america has to concede then that it was this same mysterious black man who founded america.
europe had a life expectancy of 40 at the time, everyone was living in squalid poverty, torture/human sacrifice was a popular hobby of the royals, so was incest. so yeh, they were indeed no better than the indians. what was your point again?
not only did europeans fight amonst eachother, they invaded and massacred across every continent on earth, death was/is europeans chief export.
