Fact: I considered both shooters. Fact: FBI calls El Paso a white nationalist domestic terrorist shooting. Fact: the Ohio shooter was no more a lefty or antifa than Trump. Fact: when one starts ad homming another poster, he has lost the discussion. Fact: I understand perfectly what the far right posters are doing and why they are failing.

 

While the above is true - his xenophobia is only part of the problem. There are other factors which lead to taking such an action. Many people are racist/xenophobic but, they do not wake up in the morning and decide to go on a mass killing spree. There is much more to the story here.

 

Given some other nations have roughly comparable laws (excluding full auto NFA weapons which arent used in crime anyway) with vastly lower mass shooting rates, I think even if you prefer the gun control route you need to put an equal or greater consideration into what's wrong with the heads of Americans.

Still in Auatralia these vile murderers can legally own the handguns used in the deadliest US school shooting - Columbine. But we don't have Columbines. The reason why is more than just gun policy.

Rarely have I seen a party twist itself into ideological knots the way Trump supporters do. I don't think they know what their core beliefs are, outside "brown people bad". This would seem to indicate the US has deficiencies in registration, licensing, and culture - not so much the legality of certain firearms.

There are still people serving sentences in prison today, who killed people some decades ago, some deliberately, some 'by accident', because the killers were inspired by Leftwing ideology. They are invariably described as 'political prisoners' by Leftists. There are whole websites devoted to glorifying them and agitating for their release, and these websites never mention the victims of these people. You would think they got their long sentences for picketing the White House.

Now ... would it be fair to say, 'Ah ha! See what agitating against the Vietnam War, or against racist police brutality, or for fair treatment for American Indians, or for Puerto Rican independence, leads to?' (All of these are causes which inspired the killers.)

At the time, the mainstream Left disavowed these violent acts, not least because they actually harmed the Left's causes in the eyes of ordinary people. Just as today the mainstream Right disavows White Nationalists and neo-Nazis. (As memory of their acts fades, some people on the Left today take up the cause of the killers, or argue that actually, despite the smoking gun, literally, found next to the killer, he really didn't do it. Credulity and gullibility is found not only among religious fundamentalists.)
