Flights have resumed. Riot is “a violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd.” The violence was instigated by the PRC agitators who were brought in to hurry things along and cause the demonstrators to lose sympathy.
Failing to transform its economy sufficiently and come up with new growth engines, Hong Kong has seen its GDP, as a proportion of China's economy, shrink substantially over past two decades. Home Business Macro Economy HKEJJun 9, 2017 11:50am HK vs China GDP: A sobering reality Hong Kong’s economy relative to China’s gross domestic product (GDP) has fallen from a peak of 27 percent in 1993 to less than 3 percent in 2017. In 1997, when Britain handed the city back to Chinese sovereignty, Hong Kong’s GDP was still around 20 percent the size of the mainland economy, as the territory played the vital role of a middleman in China’s trade and investments with the rest of the world. Through the years, however, China underwent enormous economic growth. Cities such as Shenzhen and Shanghai developed rapidly and continued to attract huge foreign investment. The Chinese government also launched a slew of policies, such as the establishment of free trade zones, to further stimulate the nation’s economic expansion. As for Hong Kong, it failed to change its economic structure sufficiently, leading to lack of new growth engines. So now, twenty years after the handover, we have a situation where Hong Kong’s GDP is equivalent to just 2.9 percent of China’s economy.
Jesse Jackson confessed to similar fears: "Perhaps inadvertently, Jesse Jackson gave credence to the view in November when he observed at Operation PUSH in Chicago that "there is nothing more painful for me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps, and start thinking about robbery, then look around and see someone white, and feel relieved." This startling comment by the nation's most prominent black spokesman and fighter against racial bias opened the door to more straightforward discussions within the black community itself of the fear acknowledged by Jackson. Since then he has been a leader in efforts to confront not only that fear but the specific question of black-on-black violence." The people who still have to live in our urban hell holes should be encouraged to carry concealed guns to restore the peace, especially black Americans who are being decimated by violent criminals. . The professional police model of law enforcement, at least in our cities, has clearly failed.
China GDP is $14 trillion PPP $28 trillion, HK is about 1%-2% china's GDP, so $14T*0.01 also after disability of protest a lot company gonna move to China/Singapore etc. meaning next few years HK economy gonna get worse. not counting tourist industry which also took a hit. and don't forget HK get 70% of its fresh water and 40% of its energy from china. so in a nutshell if HK get its wish by declare independence. it will become a 3rd world nation in few months.
The question is, which way? In the direction of Light or Darkness. And if Darkness, why wouldn't one want to do everything reasonably and humanly possible to reverse the course, and stop evil at all costs? Wait. I know--In a corrupt world, its best to be pragmatic--everyone knows Idealism will get you killed, one way or another. And for nothing. Ask the fools of Tiananmen Square. Oops, they're dead. Proves the point, I guess.
Did you get an A+ in Economics 101. "Many myths surround the economic relationship between the United States and China. Four, in particular, stand out, and it is important to identify them as myths to avoid misunderstandings that could adversely influence policy decisions. The fact that China has become the largest foreign holder of U.S. government securities is taken as indicating that the United States is heavily dependent on China to finance its budget deficits. Similarly, since China is a major source for U.S. imports, U.S. consumers are seen as dependent on cheap Chinese goods. In addition, the Chinese authorities have emphasized that they strongly resist external pressures to try to influence policy decisions and that economic instability in China is bad, with adverse implications for the rest of the world. Smart Competition: Adapting U.S. Strategy Toward China at 40 Years Taken together, these four myths could lead to the conclusion that China should not be pushed hard by the United States (or other major countries) to more quickly change its policies, especially its exchange rate policy, to facilitate the rebalancing of its economy. But such a conclusion would be a major mistake, and that is why during his trip to Asia, President Barack Obama needs to dispel these myths and bring pressure to bear for faster economic policy changes in China. This would be in keeping with the objectives for dealing with global imbalances laid out by the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh in September 2009." Max Chung, a Yuen Long local and the organiser for this Saturday's "Take Back Yuen Long" protest, suspected some may have come from mainland China. "They looked like triad gangsters. Most of them are local but some don't speak [Cantonese], the local language," he said. This isn't the first time triads have arisen in pro-democracy protests. Five years ago, peaceful activists were set upon by suspected triad members during the Occupy and Umbrella movements of 2014. At the time, academics Federico Varese and Rebecca Wong suggested triads "might have found a new role as enforcer of unpopular policies and repression of democratic protests in the context of a drift towards authoritarianism in Hong Kong". https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-07...hey-involved-in-attacks-in-hong-kong/11341726
The damage done to the CP in China by the Tiananmen Square massacre is slow poison. It was very severe and apparently permanent.
the key words is suspected, they assume anyone speak mandarin are coming from china. I speak mandarin too, and i'm an American. remember the news at airport someone got beat up of Suspect been undercover cop, and protester prevent paramedic access to him, the guy almost die. it turn out the guy is a journalist from mainland. its nothing but Mob justice.
Not like Mexico City 1968 at all. China is "big enough" they really don't care. farm production would be crippled without China as a buyer. Moi @Ddyad is :flagcanada; and moderates over "all of us".
well the protester gonna take PRC example or they want democracy/freedom/innocent until proven guilty like here? if its former then who care, if its latter then they better stop the mob justice attitude.
Are you suggesting China will not send in troops? And if they don't, will it because they agree to Hong Kong to governing itself, or because they've sent in assassins and killed the leadership of the Revolution?
guess I wrote it without checking. my point is if the protestor want democracy etc, then they shouldn't follow example of PRC court system and use mob justice, which is even worst. it does not win hearts and mind of HK locals, it has the opposite affect. you would think they learn this lesson back in 2014 protest.
