Melting ice is slowing down the Atlantic ocean's circulation system. Yes, that's similar to what happens in 'The Day After Tomorrow.' https://news.yahoo.com/melting-ice-slowing-down-atlantic-184800275.html The ocean current system in the Atlantic Ocean, called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), is responsible for western Europe's warm temperatures. But according to a new report from the United Nations, rising water temperatures and changes to the salinity of the world's oceans is causing the AMOC to weaken. Other recent research has found that the AMOC could slow significantly if enough fresh water from melting ice enters the ocean. Weaker current circulation could bring more extreme weather to the Northern Hemisphere. A version of this scenario is depicted in the movie "The Day After Tomorrow," though the film isn't scientifically accurate. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Unprecedented melting of the Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets, combined with warming ocean water, could cause sea levels to rise by more than 3 feet by the end of the century, according to new report. . . . . . Just more science reminding us we could all die, slow horrible deaths. Moi Across an immense, unguarded, ethereal border, Canadians, cool and unsympathetic, regard our America with envious eyes and slowly and surely draw their plans against us. Witness their fresh water dumping!
Well, significantly slowing that Atlantic current would certainly affect the northeastern US and Europe as local climate is based on heat being added from the south. Significant change in the current would be hard on those regions. But, the Sept 25,2019 report shows much more concern about rising seas and puts the perceptable slowing of this current as being only of possible concern. I think this Yahoo author is strongly overstating what is being reported by the scietific community. That's a problem. When people don't see that happen, people will think science is failing us, is fake news, or whatever -- when it's really no more than authors hyping and creating click bait.
London could end up with the same basic temperatures as Sibera. This ocean current is critical to regulating the temps in Western Europe. But even more importantly, the movement of cold, deep water into warmer waters, is what drives the nutrient cycle that feeds life in the oceans. Rising and falling waters occur in chimneys that can be counted. Navy subs have noted a reduction in the number of chimneys for well over a decade now.
Look at the bright side. A Nordic Wine Industry is being developed. https://news.yahoo.com/winemaking-nordics-world-away-french-chateau-luxe-133558390.html Winemaking in the Nordics, a world away from French chateau luxe Making wine in the Nordic countries is far from the glamour associated with Europe's famed wine chateaux: here the sun is fickle, the season is short and diehard aficionados work up more sweat than wine but climate change is helping boost harvests. Murre Sofrakis, the winemaker at Fladie vineyard, looks at the grapevine near the city of Lund in Skane County, southern Sweden. Worlds away from the thousand-year-old vineyards of continental Europe, winemaker Murre Sofrakis inspects his vines on this late summer's day, his eyes intently focused on the ripening grapes as he strolls along. The 51-year-old strapping Swede with craggy Mediterranean looks owns a vineyard of two hectares (nearly five acres) in Sweden's southern Skane province, and is one of the country's biggest winemakers. . . Like during the Medieval Warm Up, The Brits made better wine than France. Moi
Some areas will see benefits from climate change. But it can't be ignored that the cycle of life itself is being altered and we don't know what the effects will be. In a worst case, the oceans as we know them will die. From there is it possible that we won't be able to produce enough food.
I haven't read the parts of the IPCC report of Sept 25 on sea life. The report is about 25mb and there is other surrounding material, and the OP and Yahoo article don't refer to that. Interesting report from the Navy - thanks. My main concern here is that if we're to ensure science gets a deserved level of respect we need to insist that its findings are repoted accurately.
Good point. Also, it isn't even a matter of the world as a whole producing enough food. If some single region or country can't feed its population, that is a national security risk for us as well as others, as humans won't just sit there and peacfully starve. Or, so says our Pentagon.
@WillReadmore @HereWeGoAgain I might take it more seriously with corroboration on Pacific Ocean thermal conveying currents. Like the "Japanese Current" that comes around Alaska and bringing cold water to Southern California. When I was a kid, the temperature never hardly got above 70F Last Summer it got up to 80F at Surf City USA. And that persistence and strengthening of "the blob" a mass of warm water from to Baja California. What's It All About? Living has a 100% mortality. No one gets out alive!
There is also the Nino/Nina cycle of Pacific origin. While you're right about the Japanese Current, I haven't heard any oceanographer suggest the issues in the Atlantic and Pacific are equivalent. As a total aside, the Japanese Current warms WA and OR during the winter as the air temp over the water is warmer than it would be if it were over land. So, Western WA (for example) is warmer in the winter than other areas of the US and Canada that are at the same latitude. Seattle is farther north than the northern tip of Maine, yet we average less than 7" of snow sprinkled throughout the winter and rarely sticking - even though we have plenty of damp air. Chicago way to our south averages 36" and Boston at about the same latitude as Chicago averages 48" - places where air can come in over the frozen northern land mass instead of our toasty 47f ocean.
"The blob" of warm water off the western, North America coast is geothermal I betchya! And although geothermal events have been noticed, like water flowing under the ice of Antarctica, I guess they are not the preferred Science of Man Made Global Warming to get notice or funding. 21st Century Science has become Diving For Science Dollars. Immigrate to the Southern Hemisphere More Ocean Less influence of ice ages or warm ups. Contact: @Sallyally
Dunno for that’s a good idea. We already have issues with running out of water. We’ll probably all be burnt in bushfires. This summer is going to be a stinker.
Studies of the ocean show that blobs can break off warm water masses in the Pacific and drift north. These blobs aren't pernament features. The blob detected in 2013 dissipated by 2016. Life that lives within blobs can be in deep trouble as the blob dissipates with no path back to warmer water. How do you think we know about water temperature, flow and geothermal events under antarctica? Besides that, the Arctic is at least as interesting as an economically important northwest passage opens and Russia makes claims to territory that is currently not theirs - due to findings in the region. Scientifc method has several levels in its design that are there for the purpose of detecting mistakes and fraud. Anyone found fudging studies is unlikely to have a career. Let's be careful about how much we disrespect science, as it is how we know what is going on.
Something like 60 million Americans live pay check to pay check and many others have no paycheck...unlikely any of these people can migrate anywhere. Millions more Americans, including middle-class Americans, have little to no savings. The federal government is $22 TRILLION in debt with most local and state governments struggling to fund their governments. If we were to consider relocating people and businesses from southern Florida, for example, in the grand scheme of things a very small migration effort, where will people go, how will they get there, once there what will they have, where will they work? There are NO vacant cities waiting to be occupied! Wherever they migrate there won't be infrastructure or water or arable land, etc. Forced migration of millions of people will be a monumental challenge causing horrific pain and suffering...
YES But have Australia's recent leaders ever placed the quality of life for Australians above . . . . FEAR GLOBAL WARMING Buy Australia. or maybe KiwiLand" That is the message. ' NO FORCED MIGRATION1 I ain't advocating no FREE RIDE. Yes, "Build The Wall" Catch and release, over there. With information, how to complain to an Embassy, over there New Zealand would require Moi to not be a parasite on the social system Kiwi-s have worked their lives to establish. Moi be 71, no outstanding pathology, etc. Just saying those concerned about a stable land owning - home during these times of Northern Hemisphere global climate change contact @Sallyally . Don't Trust Mexico to recognize your land deed.
With a population of about 5m, how many people will New Zealand accept? Today, Bangladeshis are trying to escape Bangladesh to India and other places due to climate related agricultural change. Today, the South Pacific has island nations that need a place to move their countries due to sea rise. I'm just curious as to what New Zealand is open to doing.
Pay Your Way and You Get In. Any such Bangladesh type applicants? The Kiwis are smart enough not to dilute their social programs for "globalism". Ref. What Moi has incorrect.
Yes!! That is the problem. NO country likes the idea of large numbers of climate refugees. That is why the Pentagon sees climate change as a national security threat. People won't just sit in their homes and watch the kids starve to death. And, when they decide to move, people aren't going to like it.
NZ is a beautiful country with wonderful people, but it doesn't have the size or economy to withstand a significant influx. South Pacific islands and Vietnam are on the list of coutries most seriously at risk due to climate change. I don't hear of NZ being a significant destination for these refugees - nor would I expect to.
