When you go to a store that has self checkout machines, dont use them. All you are doing is putting someone out of a job. It is simply the politics of money. And to my way of thinking, if you use the machines, you should get and employee discount since you are basically working for the store.
Society adjusts to all changes and capitalism is the best way to go. Suppose back in early 1900 everyone decided not to buy automobiles because it would put the wagon works people out of a job? Do you also suggest we avoid ATM machines which bypass bank tellers? How about gas stations where we now pump our own gasoline eliminating the gas station attendant? Should we stop ordering products on-line so as to protect the brick and mortar store clerk's job? I like self check-out machines because usually I don't have to stand in line. Many jobs have been eliminated in the past 300 years but today we have over 300 million people and the lowest unemployment in history. Relax.
you should have thought of this when you dropped out of high school and became a cashier at the dollar store.
I often remind young cashiers to remember to always mention this job on all of their future resumes and applications. I tell them, as an employer myself, I would want to know that they have a documented history of being trusted with other people's money. And, I'd especially want to know that they thought of it that way.
So you want socialized grocery stores and don't believe in capitalism. Don't worry. Already being done - you walk in the store and facial recognition cameras pull up your account. You get what you want. When you leave, RFID tags on each product are read at the door and billed to your account.
And if you don't keep prices down, you'll be gone and your business will go to your competitors. Kroger is going thru some sort of crash.. I expect they will rewrite their model.. like Aldi perhaps.. Meanwhile, the former cashiers might train in developing or manufacturing or repairing self scan equipment.
I’m not a fan of self service, but I use them because the alternative is waiting ten minutes for one of three cashiers in the whole store to check me out. Always hate seeing 30+ registers with no one working them. I guess they don’t want to pay for the manpower to run them. Save a buck any way you can I suppose.
Cashiers are cashiers because developing self scanning machines is probably beyond their abilities. Furthermore it takes far fewer people to manufacture nowadays because of robots and only a handful are needed to repair them. What will the rest of the cashiers who are now out of work do for a living?
Why pay someone to scan all your items when the customer can scan them? Why pay someone to bag your groceries when the customer can bag them? Why pay someone to gas up a vehicle, clean the windshield, and collect the money when the customer can do it and pay at the pump with a credit card? But one day in the future when we have gone full circle don't be surprised if someone comes up with the idea of a full service gas station where they greet you by name with a smile and wearing a clean uniform. A new idea!!! The attendant will gas up your car, clean the windshield, and check the oil and tires, all while you just set in your comfortable weather-controlled vehicle
Home Depot is getting really bad about it the last time I was there they literally had 2 regular registers open including one for the pro accounts. Then they will have like eight self-checkouts with three cashiers helping people. Used to be really annoying. couple years back but I've gotten used to it. it goes fairly smooth.
Fallacy of the seen and the unseen, one of the most common in economics. There is little to no evidence that automation leads to net job loss. Will you also avoid ATMs? How about all ecommerce?
I think you're correct, but people fear change or at the very least they are temporarily uncomfortable... so you do get those who rant and rave about "Liberals".
It also lowers cost which lowers prices. No different than self service gas pumps. Before you claim it does not lower prices, remember that there is competition for your money.
Their self checkouts are at least pretty smooth. Can’t stand the ones that always have weight issues in the bagging area.
ya and HD at least got the little gun scanners now so you can "beep" a 2x4 w/o any hassle, but when its not busy, its a tad frustrating because there are 2 or 3 of us doing self checkout while the 2-3 employees kind of stand there and watch you do their job, but some of the more active (good?) employees will step up and do it for you right there, maybe because they just want to help, maybe just to alleviate boredom.
So cashiers are reduced to being underpaid cleaners thanks to automation. Must be all that "winning" that is making America so "great" for the top 1% while hardworking Americans are reduced to the status of exploited serfdom. Sad!
No, it's called progress, you know, as in "progressive". President Trump has brought us unprecedented lows in unemployment and with that come rising wages. They may be fin different fields than previous but there have been few times in our recent history where the demand for carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and others in the trades and automation has made those jobs easier.
