Whatever it was the appointment was well known and there was no question of its legality, Can Trump same the same about the Jared/Ivanka ( JUMP? nah, too easy ) appointments?

BTW. The prosecutor Trump wanted removed was being taken off because he REFUSED to prosecute corrupt people, if Hunter was corrupt you'd think Dad would LIKE that, wouldn't you?

Judges shouldn't be subject to elections at all IMO. Some things, like the administration of law, should not be affected by popular opinion.

OTOH removal of a judge for actual malfeasance or incompetence should be easier.

100% try again what does that have to do with them doing so in a secret manner so they won't be accountable to the People?

Isn't the role of Representatives and senators to represent the people of their district and state? Or is it to achieve an agenda in secret that the people of certain districts and states oppose. Going to a secret ballot sets a precedence. You may achieve your agenda, a short term gain. But once done, there will be more and more secret ballots to hid how senators and House Representatives vote so not to incur the wrath of the voters. There will be no accountability, not way to hold elected representatives and senators accountable for their actions and votes. It will be government done in total secrecy once the cat is out of the bag.

We have lots of legislation pass by voice vote alone now. As long as the two major parties agree on that. No record vote. How does one gauge the performance of their representative and or senator when they have no record of them to gauge. Set the precedence with Trump by secret ballot which probably won't entice enough Republicans anyway, you've set the precedence for all future legislation to be done in total secret.

He entered a false affidavit, he suborned that affidavit from another person and his own attorney stipulated sexual activity of any kind and Judge Wright summarily dismissed his attempts to lie as did the grand jury. The CHARGES were submitted to Congress and then held until the day he was leaving office and presented to him.

You keep conflating bringing forth the charges and the actual indictment and prosecution. Clinton was charged the handing of the indictment was held until he was leaving office. Learn the difference.

If there's good reason to hate someone then hatred of him is legitimate motivation. The problem here, however, isn't motivations but the fact that a small faction shouldn't be able to control the vote of someone who represents a lot more people than them by controlling the electoral process. Since the secret vote itself must be called for in popular vote it seems a moot point. It may be one of the many weaknesses inherent in a two party system.

OTOH it should be noted that there is still a general election and if party candidates are forced into positions completely out of touch with the general populace they will simply lose to the other party. This is about to happen to the Republican Trump toadys in 2020

Sorry, fellows, I got a little bit ahead of myself. I was thinking about the socialist-Democrat that would be elected next November in the aftermath of a Trump impeachment AND removal (pick your own Democrat... they're basically all very much alike). I wasn't talking about Pence, but I gave that impression (which would be wrong, of course)....

Even at uninterrupted speed, the House and Senate probably couldn't impeach AND remove Trump before next spring, leaving only a few months before the election. Pence's butt wouldn't even be 'warm in the chair' in the Oval Office before he'd be gone, too. But, Democrats in the House could vote to impeach Trump before this upcoming holiday recess if they want to. That would give them enough time for the 'impeachment' to do them a lot of political benefit.

The Constitution provides the House of Representatives the ABILITY to impeach any president for any reason it likes... ANY reason. It can be a valid reason, or an invalid reason. Remember: ~20 years ago, Bill Clinton was "impeached", but, the Senate did not vote to remove him from office! Net result -- nothing. And, some pollsters claim that Bill emerged from that spectacle more popular than ever before....

Right. Yes, the people elect representatives and those representatives are free to vote how they wish, and they will pay the price if their voting record does not represent their constituents. You know that saying - elections have consequences. I select the representatives that I vote for based on their voting record and how that record aligns with my personal views. If the votes aren't public then what criteria does the electorate use to select their representatives? Nicest smile? Color of their shoes?

The main thing to remember here is that Clinton was impeached for lying about having an extramarital affair, just about every reasonable person I know says that impeachment was about the lying, not the affair, and he was tricked into the lie. It was a scheme by Gingrich and the Freshman Republican Congress which largely backfired . OTOH, Trump wasn't tricked into anything. He was bribing a foreign President with our tax dollars to help him rig his own election. If he isn't impeached and removed then we shouldn't have impeachments at all, we should remove any part of Congress that permits Trump to stay in Office if they do.

If Trump is removed, then Pence is the President.

    Get a better talking point.

I think that's a pretty easily defendable vote though. Plus, there are several retiring Senators who could vote and not face any political harm.

Not ALL votes should be secret, but some, where a small faction is controlling the electoral process based on it, should be. Again, this doesn't come up all the time, Factions which can support powerful Primary Challenges are not often one issue, or one vote, types of organizations

Asked and answered. I represent no one other than myself, representatives represent others and that demands transparency.

Further, We The People is the sovereign, I am We The People. No government or government official needs know how I vote, they represent all equally.

As the article notes, there are several Republicans who do not face re-election until 2024 or who are outright retiring currently.

Don't know about "more popular". Many disagreed with the impeachment of him for such a trivial thing. It was more of a rebuke, not so much that Clinton was "more popular". In many ways Trumps election was the same thing, a rebuke, just for different reasons.

As I expected, you have no idea what that means.

It doesn't remotely mean that the Dems were "lying"; it means that there was evidence of conspiracy, but (in Mueller's opinion) insufficient evidence to establish all elements of the crime.

Do you actually need for me to quote (for the umpteenth time) what Mueller actually thought? I think you need that, because you plainly have no idea what's in the Mueller Report.

You could be right, Aleks, and what you say about Bill Clinton is, indeed, 'spot-on' target.

In the upcoming weeks, there will be a LOT of 'hair-splitting' by both Democrats and Republicans. Some things will be put under an 'electron microscope', while others as large as a city block will be completely passed over. Politics, politics, politics -- Left and Right.

All I can say at this point is that if Trump had been smart, he could have let his subordinates launch a "Ukraine corruption inquiry" without Trump, himself, soiling his fingers with it AT ALL. But, honestly, as time goes on, I am having to confront the unpleasantly stark reality that Donald Trump isn't so terribly smart after all....

My 'gut-feel' at this early point is that when the sun rises on Wednesday, November 4th, 2020, neither Donald Trump nor Joe Biden is going to be identified as President of the United States for the next term... but it will be a Democrat of some variety....

Why is that funny to you? Did you think that witnesses destroying evidence, using encryptions, lying and being unavailable and the President engaging in obstructive behavior means that Mueller was able to conduct a full and complete investigation--that the facts are all out and available?

    *LOL*

Read the report. You need to educate yourself.

Worrying that the people may object if you vote for partisan reasons implies that the people agree with your party. It's very possible that being partisan may be about to screw the Republicans big time in 2020.

I would say that fear rest with the Democrats over this sham impeachment and now you want it done in secret. Just amazing.

He was charged with felonies for lying about his using his power as the President in rewarding subordinate government employees who granted him sexual favors with special treatment, promotions, higher pay in a federal civil rights lawsuit in which another former subordinate state government was suing him for sexual harassment and sexual assault and threatening her if she said anything about it. Why do you try to misrepresent it as merely an extramarital affair? And he was not "tricked" he plotted with Lewinsky to submit a false affidavit, prima facie evidence of perjury and obstruction of justice, and submitted that false affidavit. Gingrich had nothing to do with nor the Freshman Republican Congress, the evidence of the 8 felonies in which he engaged before anything came before Gingrich and the Congress. And of course there was no bribe offered by Trump to anyone and you cannot point to that in the transcript of the conversation.

And Trump will not be overturning the election and I have no doubt the Democrats will immediately begin motions to remove Pence while refusing to confirm his selection for a new VP.

So you're suggesting that the Dems plan to impeach every non-Democratic President from now on if this impeachment succeeds?
