China seems to survive well during the recent episodes of Sanctions I am surprised if could apply such pressure. Really, what can do to China? Moi Across an immense, unguarded, ethereal border, Canadians, cool and unsympathetic, regard our America with envious eyes and slowly and surely draw their plans against us.
I don't know DC is involved or not, I kind doubt it. but even before the protest, mainlander and HKgoner don't see eye to eye, a lot HK look down upon mainlander, HK resident often think they are better than mainland Chinese, a lot mainlander don't like that cause its pure discrimination, now with targeting mainland Chinese student/properties, it generate more hate from mainland. HK should know if they ever want to achieve anything, they need mainland Chinese citizen support. HK just too small compare to China in term of population, military and economy. Macao is another former west colony, but the citizen over there doing differently than HK. rather than violent protest they prefer stability and economy. When Portugal hand over Macao to china in 1999, its GDP/cap is lower than HK, now their GDP/Cap is $80K USD higher than US GDP/cap of $56k, while HK GDP/cap slip a lot to $40k ish. Another thing about Macao resident is they see themselves as Chinese rather Macao citizen and don't want independent, because of that the CCP invest a lot into the region which drum up the GDP there even further. Furthermore, most Macao resident hold dual citizenship with both Chinese and Portugal passport, contrary to HK which only hold Chinese passport with HK special admin region. UK reject 300 thousands HK application to apply UK citizenship after 97 handover, while Portugal accept all Macao resident as its citizen. For most Macao resident there is no reason for them to leave, cause they are making a lot base off mainland tourism/investment and have lower cost of living compare to EU.
she probably mean if china really want to intervene they would done it long time ago, and any protest will be crush before it can start.
China does not rule over Hong Kong - yet. So it cannot legally intervene. As for Tsar Nicholas II, I don't know what the comparison is. What I do know is that the criminal Bolsheviks used the Tsar's free press to spread propaganda and lies and turn some against him. Believe me, it wasn't many but it worked on some malcontents and even on the nobility by spreading rumors that the Tsar's plans were to distribute their lands to the people, when the Tsar's plans were to distribute his own lands. There was a war going on, so the Tsar had to stop everything. The Bolsheviks knew they had to work fast and they were helped by the ambitions of his uncle and his family for the throne. Russia at the time had the fastest growing economy in the world, and it took Stalin 20 years to raise the Soviet Union's economy to the same level. What the Soviet Union owed the Tsar, were the institutions and social services that he started. They survived, while all of the Soviet innovations failed. So what was the result of the Bolsheviks? Twenty million Christians dead, 40 thousand churches burned, communist revolts going on all over Europe, and an oppositional nationalism that culminated in WWII - and the deaths of millions more.
China does have legal authority to intervene and they have threatened to do so: https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/ne8gaq/china-is-running-out-of-options-in-hong-kong https://www.washingtonpost.com/worl...161fba-05b8-11ea-9118-25d6bd37dfb1_story.html https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-49148762 In other related news on China interfering in Hong Kong: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/05/world/asia/china-hong-kong-leung-yau-dispute.html https://foreignpolicy.com/2019/10/22/compromise-possible-hong-kong-democracy-china/ https://www.scmp.com/news/china/pol...ase-intervention-hong-kong-labelling-protests I will add commentary and context to each of the links above and offer more references later, but what China is more worried about is public opinion than any legal right, which, Beijing et al., 2019 does think it already has. Also in The Washington Post article, it does highlight increasingly smaller rioting groups becoming increasingly violent which I did not and do not deny, but there are larger issues at play here. Under Chinese law, if terrorists or subversive groups threaten the stability of Hong Kong, China can intervene, and lo and behold, look at how China has been labeling protestors, and some of the violent aggressors, in fact, meet a definition acceptable under Chinese law.
The US and China were working on a trade deal. To be honest, I don't think China would do anything to jeopardize its economy, especially at a time when it's making trade deals for its silk roads and knowing that Washington will do anything to destroy those deals. They're not even responding to the provocations by our 7th fleet.
What ever happened to "loosing face"? How much does "face" sell for . . . Or Determined to be its' own master after the abuses it took being sectioned for European presence. Opium War. At least they got a great German beer factory out of it And China has Russia trade agreements. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- So China does a Martial Law Hong Kong with military administration and may be condemned for a number of months. But, in the end, things will quickly return to "normal". And China does play the best, Long Game. See Ukraine thread selling farm land. Current News How much will China buy as they buy Australian Dairy businesses and the collapse of Dean Foods, the largest Dairy business. Watch China and what it is buying! Means of food production in "foreign" lands. Everyone concerned has "the bomb" and no one is going to take away China's foreign assets. @Sallyally would your gov't ever take dominion of Chinese assets? Y'think?
China is a threat to America's hegemony, so Washington wants to weaken it in whatever way they could. One of the ways is by playing on the fears and passions of the one's who have the most to lose, and who have been the most influenced by the West. That would be Hong Kong. They also play on the most vulnerable which is the youth, and they do this through NGO's by encouraging them to start demanding more rights. I'm sure there are American NGO's near all the universities. To give you an idea, in Ukraine the propaganda and NGO's worked on the minority in Western Ukraine, since it had been a part of Poland and they hated Russia. The protesters were even being paid. They even hired snipers from Georgia to kill protesters and police so they would overthrow the elected president and take over the country. In Syria the NGO's and agents worked on the Sunnis and others to demand more rights. There were snipers also like in Ukraine, and Washington and its MSM immediately blamed Assad when some people were killed, so they could turn the people against him.
Almost everything comes from mainland China or is shipped in. And the sea around HK is still China's territorial waters and they can stop any goods entering or leaving HK. I believe the problem will either be fixed from within, because HK is losing money, or they will ask for China's help, possibly when a police officer is killed by a protester, and now they are firing arrows and throwing javelins, it won't be long before that happens.
Oddly enough the Chinese government non-response and PR game has improved since 20 years ago. The army has finally been deployed from the barracks in Hong Kong, for clean up duties.
It took them 30 minutes to clean up that mess. Amazing what an army can do. Now shouldn't ours be deployed to build the wall instead of being stationed overseas?
The unrest and rioting in Hong Kong is doing to it what Brexit is doing to the U.K. and specifically London, destroying it's prior position in the worlds economic markets.
https://news.yahoo.com/chile-police-stopped-rescue-workers-004537157.html Chile police stopped rescue workers helping dying protester: human rights watchdog SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Chile's independent human rights watchdog said on Saturday it would file a formal complaint for murder against police officers who allegedly prevented paramedics from attending a heart attack victim amid a protest Friday. Security forces firing tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons made it impossible for rescue workers to properly treat the victim, Chile's publicly-funded National Institute for Human Rights said. Twenty-nine year old Abel Acuna died shortly after at a nearby Santiago hospital. . . . oops that be today's news from Chile, ever mind. psst, witness "Censorship By Choice of Story"
Can you figure out another way to keep track of who is coming into the country, and who is not? The wall is not to keep workers out, it's to keep terrorists who are being sent over by Qatar and pretending to be workers out. Qatar is charging $35 a flight to Mexico from Africa. I would be pretty worried about that if I were you.
The wall that has ben built so far is already being circumvented and people are getting directly through, and the costs are astronomical. In short, yes I can think of better ways.
I don't think there is a snow flakes chance in Hell of that. I am a tad geographically closer to HK than most of you and our national TV Ch (Australian Broadcasting Commission) provides very regular vision up-dates. The protestors have gone way too far. Chinese patience has been quite evident but I doubt it is inexhaustible. If the protestors do not ratchet back, I can see yet another Tiananmen Square smack down not far away.
Of course, to the Hard Left, everything must relate back to Imperialist America or Britain. My enemy's enemy is my friend. China is an empire. Iran aspires to be an empire, for the fourth time. Zululand was an empire. Aztecs were an empire. Russia aspires for a new empire. Mongols had the greatest empire. But... nothing these guys did is as evil as what America or Britain did. You can believe that, so long as you don't read history.
