The most common date given for the arrival of tobacco in England is 27th July 1586, when it is said Sir Walter Raleigh brought it to England from Virginia. Rumor and Legend has it that Sir Walter’s servant, seeing him smoking a pipe for the first time, threw water over him, fearing him to be on fire. In 1586, the sight of the colonists puffing away on their pipes started a craze at Court. It is said that in 1600 Sir Walter Raleigh tempted Queen Elizabeth I to try smoking. This was copied by the population as a whole and by the early 1660s the habit was commonplace and starting to cause concern. http://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofEngland/Introduction-of-Tobacco-to-England/
Tobacco has a long history from its usages in the early Americas. Increasingly popular with the arrival of Spain to America, which introduced tobacco to the Europeans by whom it was heavily traded. Following the industrial revolution, cigarettes were becoming popularized in the New World as well as Europe, which fostered yet another unparalleled increase in growth. This remained so until scientific studies in the mid-1900s demonstrated the negative health effects of tobacco smoking including lung and throat cancer. Tobacco was first discovered by the native people of Mesoamerica and South America and later introduced to Europe and the rest of the world. Tobacco had already long been used in the Americas by the time European settlers arrived and introduced the practice to Europe, where it became popular. Eastern North American tribes have historically carried tobacco in pouches as a readily accepted trade item, as well as smoking it in pipe ceremonies, whether for sacred ceremonies or those to seal a treaty or agreement. Tobacco is considered a gift from the Creator, and tobacco smoke is seen as carrying one's thoughts and prayers to the spirits. In addition to its use in spiritual ceremonies, tobacco is also used in ethnobotany for medical treatment of physical conditions. As a pain killer it has been used for earache and toothache and occasionally as a poultice. Some indigenous peoples in California have used tobacco as one ingredient in smoking mixtures for treating colds; usually it is mixed with the leaves of the small desert sage, Salvia dorrii, or the root of Indian balsam or cough root, Leptotaenia multifida (the addition of which was thought to be particularly good for asthma and tuberculosis). In addition to its traditional medicinal uses, tobacco was also used as a form of currency between Native Americans and Colonists from the 1620s on. Las Casas vividly described how the first scouts sent by Columbus into the interior of Cuba found men with half-burned wood in their hands and certain herbs to take their smokes, which are some dry herbs put in a certain leaf, also dry, like those the boys make on the day of the Passover of the Holy Ghost; and having lighted one part of it, by the other they suck, absorb, or receive that smoke inside with the breath, by which they become benumbed and almost drunk, and so it is said they do not feel fatigue. These, muskets as we will call them, they call tabacos. I knew Spaniards on this island of Española who were accustomed to take it, and being reprimanded for it, by telling them it was a vice, they replied they were unable to cease using it. I do not know what relish or benefit they found in it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_tobacco
The United States sends more Christian missionaries abroad than any other country. According to Todd Johnson, director of the Center for the Study of Global Christianity, in 2010 the United States sent out 127,000 of the world’s estimated 400,000 missionaries. To put this in perspective, second-place Brazil sent 34,000. The irony is that now, America needs them sent here. http://www.crosswalk.com/blogs/dr-james-emery-white/missionaries-to-america.html America: The Americas (also collectively called America) encompass the totality of the continents of North and South America. Together, they make up most of the land in Earth's western hemisphere and comprise the New World. Humans first settled the Americas from Asia between 42,000 and 17,000 years ago. A second migration of Na-Dene speakersfollowed later from Asia. The subsequent migration of the Inuit into the neoarctic around 3500 BCE completed what is generally regarded as the settlement by the indigenous peoples of the Americas. The first known European settlement in the Americas was by the Norse explorer Leif Ericson. However, the colonization never became permanent and was later abandoned. The voyages of Christopher Columbus from 1492 to 1502 resulted in permanent contact with European (and subsequently, other Old World) powers, which led to the Columbian exchange. Diseases introduced fromEurope and West Africa devastated the indigenous peoples, and the European powers colonized the Americas. Mass emigration from Europe, including large numbers of indentured servants, and importation of African slaves largely replaced the indigenous peoples. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americas
The United States of America seems to be 1 Country in America. Just as Niger and Nigeria are 2 separate countries in Africa. But we have to remember that definitions of Country borders, lines, etc are given by men and have been established and have only been around for around 525 years or so... Well, that is for America, at least.
There are 195 Countries in the World.. There are 55 Countries in America.. There are 140 Countries which are NOT in America. The United States is ONLY 1 Country of the 55 Countries in America 1 Corinthians 6:2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Which country does NOT justify the wicked nor condemn the just? Out of all the 55 American Countries, The United States being 1 of them, over 80% of the Population acknowledges themselves as believers in Christ Jesus. If you don't want to be abhored or cursed by people and Nations, stop saying that the wicked are righteous and stop justifying the wicked and condemning the just. Times are changing that this will begin List of countries in the Americas by population https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_in_the_Americas_by_population
What does any of this have to do with tobacco anyways? Tobacco has been around for eons. It has been being used by people in various forms and for various purposes for THOUSANDS of years.
I am pleased that the federal government raised the age of purchasing tobacco like cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, chewing and smokeless tobacco and even the e-digs and vapor cigs and other tobacco products to the age of 21, to align it to the level of liquor age. It a step in the right direction to try to eliminate things like second hand smoke toward minors because that makes the breating air dirty and we as a majority don't like breathing dirty air in our society. I thing the WE CARD people see fit for this. and when I was 9 or 10 years old, I thought it should be the law the cigarette smoking should be for the age of 21. My advice to those under 21, DON"T START SMOKING AT ALL even when you get to 21, Don't do it at all. Contraceptives and such other condoms should also have an age limit for purchase soon. The age might be raised to 21 as well as other things like purchasing pornographic magazines, books and other obscene material to the age of 21 which would be fair. It could be more changes to come. We have to give the Marlboro man the message to BUTT OUT. (Get the idea?)
the age of being an adult is 18, I think making the age 21 is wrong unless it across the board on everything, including joining the military "Contraceptives and such other condoms should also have an age limit for purchase soon. The age might be raised to 21" what, that would increase the birth rate and abortions.. really? that what we want? as for smoking, it does have risks and benefits like many things, a smoker still hold the title of the longest living person... the problem is smoking for many is an addiction, and they smoke to excess the body likes moderate stressors from time to time, like sun, cold, heat, exercise, but any done to excess repeatedly over time and then it becomes a risk
Watch to these cards to appear at your 7 Eleven and other Convenience stores and grocery stores and Supermarkets.
I do not doubt it, sad that we treat adults like children - what's really sad is watching business id obviously elderly people, common sense is not even allowed anymore
I got carded not long ago over a bottle of cheap wine. I just think the old bat didn't want me to have it. I haven't bought anything at that store since.
had that happen at a store years ago too, only the clerk said my id was not valid as out of state, so I got a basket, walked around the store putting random little stuff in it till full, then went to clerk again, still denied me, but made me feel better that he had to ring it up, cancel it and had to put it all away as he was only one there - lol also my bank would not cash a check once cause it was a day after my birthday and expired on birthday, yet still valid to drive this is why I fear using voter ID, how many people would pull these same kinda stunts to prevent people from voting
I don't know what to say on this matter as things are tightening up around here. Society says those under 21 should not buy liquor or tobacco and not even consume it and if and when that happens whoever gave this illegal items would be convicted and thrown into jail.
I thought it was excessive. Just one more freedom whittled away. They could have at least made it 20 years of age. If I was in Congress I would have refused to approve the stricter new law unless they made it 20 years of age instead of 21.
