I am all eyes. There are multiple labs here in Europe developing tests as well. No one is ready to test-the-tests, however. Too soon, they say.

So, I cannot imagine by what magic the US has come through so quickly on these tests.

Anyway, we shall see how well they work - and if they do indeed work so much the better for all ...

That's a non-starter. They already have one somewhere between them and Russia ...

One good thing to come out of this plague, is that there is increased use of soap and water for hand washing, and increased attention to cleaning of our hospitals etc.

I have been concerned by the slapdash attitude to routine cleaning in several hospitals I’ve visited. I don’t know if it’s because the janitors jobs have been outsourced. A team of hospital employed cleaners would take more pride in keeping “their” workplace clean.

Private industries developed the tests as they do most other tests. They would normally be required to go through months or red tape with the FDA/CDC. Those two watchdogs have loosened their usual regulations in light of the crisis.

It seems developing a test may be the "easy" part. Getting government approval is the logjam.

This could be a good thing if the tests work, or a disaster if they provide a lot of false positives or negatives.

Our Navy ships sit idle with a skeleton crew. As I understand it, they take a few days of "prep" before they are ready to be sent on a mission.

I hear that the White House is considering quarantining New York, New Hampshire and parts of Connecticut from the rest of the country. No specifics as of yet as to what that means exactly.

The European Union has twice the population of the US, but it is doing not bad with a fiendish COV-19.

Italy in the south is drastic because of the magnitude of deaths. But the north, and particularly Germany, are moderate in their numbers under care.

We'll get though this. What I am concerned about is "the next one".

As I have said too often in this forum, we really messed up with SARS (that did not get out of China). We should have learned more from that two-year epidemic.

But we learned nothing. After all, "that was China's problem". And now its ours. What goes around, comes around. Including deaths from a poisonous epidemic.

We should have known better 18-years ago - thousands are already dead due to our unpreparedness ...

I was pleased to learn that soap&water is considered a very good application to rid oneself of any COV-19 that one may have recovered ...

I think you might be mistaking SARS with Swine Flu as very few people contracted SARS and a tenth died. Less than 1000 died

    What matters most is lifespan:

    Of Italy*: 83.1
    Of Spain: 83.4
    Of the USA: 79.6

On that note, one key difference between the US and South Korea: Follow-up contact. I cannot even begin to say how US doctors very rarely, almost never in fact call their patients.

I think the last time a doctor called me was when detailing my STD results(negative thank god) and that was like two years ago. And before then? Probably 9 years old or something.

So it could be there are more recovered close cases than we think or is reported.

Yes, I did misquote the numbers. Thanks for noticing.

    From here -Total (29 territories):
    Cases: 8,096
    Deaths: 774
    Fatality %: 9.6

SARS has no known antidote ...

Yes, they have a better diet and more relaxed lifestyle. In the US people may have more gadgets, but the qualify of life is better in Italy, Spain, and I'm sure France. My father in law was a Spanish MD who came to the US after the Civil War, he would always take a two hour Spanish-style good lunch. His partners would ask him why he did that, he could have taken a 15 minute lunch and made more money seeing patients like they did. They all died long before he did.

Was it a newborn? Did the mother have the virus while she was pregnant? They aren't sure what the risks are the babies of pregnant women who get infected.

    This is very sad news.

This is why Köln is affectionately called "little Italy" in Germany. In Köln, the method of getting through life is: improvisation.

So, with more than 2 hours left in my day, we have already passed 30,000 COVID-19 dead and also passed the raw growth from yesterday. Looks like we will get close to +70,000 COVID-19 cases just today. Just to remind, one month ago, on 02/27, we have a sum total of 82,000+ cases.

    2020-03-028 COVID-19 evening 001.png

Please notice the current death rate. It has risen to 4.63%.
