The country will have more gruesome deaths from COVID-19 than from some indirect cause of a longer lockdown. Trump will get the blame, but more than that he'll be to blame.

Nobody was talking about rationing and during WW2 the economy was thriving, people weren't locked down.

We could put the economy in a coma for a few months if we gave money to business, big and small, to keep employees and cover their fixed costs, and enough money to cover rent, food for the table, and car payments, etc. for the unemployed.

So far, the feds aren't doing enough to keep the economy afloat after the shutdown. Way too many people are getting laid off because we aren't supporting business for keeping them on the payroll.

Hungry people won't stay cooped up, so the people running the show had better get the money to people who need it.

Meanwhile instead of calling Congress back in session to add $250B to help small businesses Nancy Pelosi is adding to her supply of expensive chocolate ice cream in her multiple freezers.

Not yet, but if enough people can't feed themselves due to job losses etc, then rationing will need to happen. They lived with it for years during the war, so I'm sure we can do it for 12-18 months.

People weren't in lock-down, but they did experience all sorts of other deprivations and restrictions (to movement, activities, etc).

The coauthor of the WSJ retracted those claims in the article. Eliminating bio engineering does not eliminate the possibility that they were studying these viruses and accidentally leaked them. Then with the vicious campaign of disinformation that the Lying Chinese Government engaged in, we now have 147,000 dead, roughly double the number of dead we had 11 days ago. 26,000 in yhe last 3 days.

US State Department cables show that embassy officials were worried about biosecurity at a virus lab in Wuhan, China. The lab is in the same city where the coronavirus outbreak first came to the world's attention.

In 2018, US science diplomats were sent on repeated visits to a Chinese research facility. Officials sent two warnings to Washington about inadequate safety at the lab.

The column says the officials were worried about safety and management weaknesses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) and called for more help.

It also claims diplomats were concerned the lab's research on bat coronaviruses could risk a new Sars-like pandemic. The newspaper says the cables fueled more recent discussions in the US government about whether the WIV or another lab in Wuhan could have been the source of the virus behind the current pandemic.

That the Wuhan Lab (WIV) had carried out research on bat coronaviruses is a matter of public record.

In December 2019, cases of pneumonia associated with an unknown coronavirus were reported to health authorities in Wuhan. The Institute checked its coronavirus collection and found the new virus was 96 percent identical to a sample its researchers had taken from horseshoe bats in southwest China.

That's not the point. They bring wild viruses into the Wuhan Labs in order to study them.

Why was a Chinese lab being supervised by science diplomats from the US?

Who is to say it wasn’t the wild viruses which started things off?

    So what if they do?

The virus was FOUND in the WILD and WILD bats were caught and sold in the Wuhan wet market.

Only someone wearing tinfoil 24*7 is gullible enough to believe that it was deliberately released from a laboratory when it was already in the WILD!

    Sad!

Conspiracy whackjobs will believe the most ABSURD drivel because they lack critical thinking skills.

A sample was being tested in a SINGLE lab while who knows how many WILD bats were being caught and sold in the wet market on a DAILY basis.

But the tinfoil addicts convince themselves that it MUST have been ChinaDidIt!

    Sad!

It is possible that it was accidentally released from the lab' but it seems much more likely to me that the hygiene standards involved in an illegal trade in bats is inferior to those in a high biosecurity lab.
Conspiracy theories are fun though and they sell papers / create clicks.

This is the completely correct assessment. If the laboratory was studying the relevant strain then the possibility that it escaped cannot be discounted, either through a person or an incorrectly disposed of carcass or sample. However, the most likely explanation remains wild animals in contact with humans outside that controlled environment.

The truth is that we may never know. It simply may not be possible to trace back to 'patient zero'. In that case the most likely explanation is the one to go with. Of course, that doesn't serve the political agenda being pushed or satisfy the egos of conspiracy theorists.

When conspiracy theories are HARMLESS then they are funny.

But when they are deliberate DISINFORMATION for the sole purpose of inflaming partisan division then they need to be called out and ridiculed so that no one takes them seriously.

Perhaps what we heard from day one was the deliberate misinformation. The story has changed from multiple sources and lab made sure makes more sense than some guy eating a bat. There was/is also very good reason for selling a viable cover story.

This just exposes your lack of knowledge. Absolutely nobody of relevance has suggested that you can catch the virus from eating bats.
However, scientific papers have suggested that you can get it from inhaling the virus as a result of coming into contact with bat droppings.
