Instead of bail them out congress should return the pre-funded pensions they have mandated and then stolen, something no private company could survive. I still get tons of business mail and my mailwoman is great.

It will be sad to see republicans destroy another American institution in their effort to sell out to the highest bidder.

Enjoy that paper while you can! It's disappearing along with the need of large filing cabinets and countless hours searching for a document because someone forgot to put a search function on the filing cabinet.

I think socialism is good in some cases but the post office no longer needs to socialized. There are more important things to socialize.

The problem is one of the your Governments own making. For decades now the US Congress and Senate have mandated that the US Post Office must provide regular and reliable service to ALL American citizens regardless of however remote their geographic location. At the same time they have refused to sanction price increases (or budget increases) that would fully cover the cost of providing those expensive regional services.

Private firms like UPS can factor the cost of delivering items to say someone in rural Alaska in the price they charge. The post office cannot. And of course it can't decline to cover those high cost areas either.

Result? nothing less than the perfect formula for running an otherwise perfectly viable public service into the ground. And its happening no-where else in the western world that I know of.

I still send greeting cards for birthdays and holidays. All that is necessary is for USPS or someone new, to take up general delivery. Perhaps a merger of sorts, but as it exists now, the USPS is a poor financial risk for a 'bail out'.

I just saw a video of a lady who is homeless and lives in her van. She keeps a private mailbox at the Post office to receive her mail.
Wonder what she would do if the Post office closes down?
Also, the post office in my town is located in a beautiful old building. It would be a shame to let it sit vacant and unused.

No, Jeff Bezos is rich enough. I don't want to throw any more business his way. ( And I heard he doesn't even pay taxes).

I use USPS for almost all of my shipping. They have access to my building and can leave packages for me when I am not home. UPS and Fed Ex require me to be home to leave a package. USPS all the way for me.

Yes Republicans want to spy on everyone, the Democrats certainly wouldn't illegally spy on someone's campaign, use various branches of the government like the IRS as a weapon, or have what is claimed as the largest collection of data ever compiled according to Pelosi. Yes it only Republicans.

Get to know your FedEx guy. The ground guys are locally own and contracted to deliver for FedEx. He knows where I want stuff dropped and has no problem leaving stuff for me. And the UPS guy is the same. You almost always get the same guy, they will work with you. I had one guy drop a package off at my house on his way home in his personal because it got put on the wrong truck. It is amazing how well you can get treated when you are nice and polite to people.

My mailman is lazy as they come and is the only guy of the three deliver people I have trouble with. I have watch him put mail in my box many times only to find out that he was sorry he missed me at home and I now have to go to the post office tomorrow to get my package. Talked to the lady at the office and asked he about it and she just shrugs he should and tells me he does that all the time when he needs to get his route done fast.

Congress - both parties - have been raiding the postal service for money for decades. Just let the postal service work like a business. Simple. Find somewhere else to feed the addiction to government spending.

I like the USPS, but if they're not making any money, there's no reason to bail them out.

I heard it floated a while back that USPS could have digital services like protected email, secure conferencing, video hosting... I would support funding the USPS to start up services like this. But we don't need to drop $89B just to keep the mail going. If they can't keep up by charging postage, they can innovate or be replaced.

I'd say the fact that the US Constitution mandates having the Postal Service is a good reason.

I guess that's just a liberal thing now, paying attention to the Constitution. It's for the best that conservatives have stopped even pretending to care about it.
