"Trump demands governors allow churches to open" "President Trump on Friday ordered governors to allow houses of worship to open immediately, declaring them “essential” to American life during COVID-19." “The governors need to do the right thing and allow these very important essential places of faith to open right now, this weekend,” Trump said during brief remarks at the White House. Trump took no questions, however, and left immediately after his brief statement." “If they don't do it I will override the governors. America, we need more prayer, not less," he said." https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/499184-trump-demands-governors-allow-churches-to-open "Behind Trump’s demand to reopen churches: Slipping poll numbers and alarm inside his campaign" "A sudden shift in support for Donald Trump among religious conservatives is triggering alarm bells inside his reelection campaign, where top aides have long banked on expanding the president’s evangelical base as a key part of their strategy for victory this November. The anxiety over Trump’s standing with the Christian right surfaced after a pair of surveys by reputable outfits earlier this month found waning confidence in the administration’s coronavirus response among key religious groups, with a staggering decline in the president’s favorability among white evangelicals and white Catholics. Part of the strategy Trump allies have adopted to protect his relationship with conservative Christians is to frame the novel coronavirus — and church closures in response to social distancing restrictions — as a threat to religious freedom. Pence told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt earlier this month that “the liberties enshrined in the Constitution still apply to every American, even in the middle of a national emergency.” The Justice Department has also gotten involved. In a letter sent Tuesday to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, department officials warned the prominent Democrat that his measures to relax social-distancing guidelines in the Golden State cannot discriminate against religious groups and institutions https://www.politico.com/news/2020/05/22/trump-churches-evaneglicals-coronavirus-274842 Most know Trump's history with religion is skeptical at best, so who, other than some southern evangelicals, are going to now buy Trump's sudden "we need more prayer" theme? And how would this not be Trump pimping religion in the midst of a health crisis for his own political ends?
the weed and porn shops are required to maintain social distancing and have all customers wear masks, and limit how many customers can come in at one time. i have no problem with churches being opened but only allowing 25% of max capacity. plus all persons must sit at least 6' apart.
How many States have weed shops? or even porn shops anymore for that matter? But regardless, how is your view here related to the question how is this not Trump pimping religion in the midst of a health crisis for his own political ends?
Proximity of worshipers, and I do believe in some States Churches are beginning to receive permission to open if they show proper spacing plans, but as we've seen, packing houses of worship with recognizing COVID can lead to disaster So anyways, do you think Trump now raising the question in forceful terms really has a sudden concern over religion or is he pimping religion in the midst of a health crisis for his own political ends?
Correct me if I'm wrong - and I know you will - but Trump doesn't have the authority to override the legal decisions of Governors in this case. And even if he did, doesn't that go against the notion of big-government-bad? Aren't states the ones who are supposed to decide for themselves?
Republicans believe (or believed) in a limited federal power, but Pres Trump has made more than a few comments suggesting he believes the federal government to be the final word on all things COVID. I personally haven't heard of one Republican calling him on it but then much of Republican ideology has proved to be hollow these past few months; law & order, personal/civic/fiscal responsibility, the preservation of life. And on the matter of churches I'll say this. The Bible contains no shortage of God's demand that we serve him through serving others. So I would church goers this question: Are you serving your community by putting yourself in a situation where a deadly virus would be able to spread easily to several people?
I don't believe Covid19 is really behind this power grab. How about they seat people by family members no less than 20ft apart in churches and mosques. And have you seen where you can be charged with a crime for swimming in the ocean at California beaches? WTF they think you might give the Chinese AIDS to a dolphin now?
I love how the left spins everything. The talking points now are all centered around the same theme of "Trump did X but only so he'll win the election". Fact: Trump wants to rebuild/restore the economy Spin: only so he'll be reelected Fact: Trump wants churches reopened Spin: only so he'll be reelected Fact: Trump wants Governors to quit politicizing COVID and reopen their states Spin: only so he'll be reelected Fact: if Trump cured cancer, the left would say he only did it so he'd be reelected
What other motivations do you think he has? Other than his re election, what do you think Trump (or any politician for that matter) cares about? He was banking on the economy for his campaign - he has to do everything he can between now and November to get it rolling again. And he was banking on the evangelical support - so he had to make a grandstand play about the churches.
Because people are being penalized for expressing their 1st amendment right, well at the same time, place like porn shops are free to be open. Churches are essential, porn shop are not.
Maybe be. The only thing I can think of that religion services fall under civil rights. Protection of civil rightists falls under both state and federal. If the state government isn't going to do anything, then the feds will step in. And they have before too.
Churches are not essential and the federal government has no ability to force states to do anything with them being open or closed (congress shall...) That said, they should have been allowed to remain open and not received federal subsidies. If their congregation means so little to them, so be it.
But liquor stores are? LOL yea Churches ARE ESSENTIAL. And as far as being able to not force then open, yea you might wnat to take a look at what happend in SC when all of this started.
It might be a first in 2020... Trump said something I agree with... "America, we need more prayer, not less" However, it's mostly because of him we need to be praying... I personally do not consider churches an "essential business", but with all the other equally idiotic non-essential "essential businesses" opening up, why not?? Your first prayer if you go to a crowded church should be for yourself...
I think Trump actually cares about America, that's what I think he cares about. He was already rich and already famous, and not a career politician. He had no "need" to run for President, but Obama had f'ed everything up royally and we were facing Obama 2.0 in the form of Hillary.....so here we are. A strong economy, especially, benefits EVERYONE. Sure it helps Trump's businesses and it will help his reelection, but at the end of the day it benefits ALL of us, and makes our country stronger. I'm good with that, and no way do I support the Democrats trying to trash it just to try to defeat Trump.
No, liquor stores are not either. Churches as a physical location are not essential, it doesn’t matter if you capitalize it. What event in SC are you referring to?
I'm afraid I don't share your opinion of Trump. Mine was formed long before he ran for President, and he has not changed my view through his current position. But having said that, I respect your view of the man. We can disagree, but I won't make fun of you simply because we differ in opinion.
