"How an unprecedented strategy cut costs, shook up the status quo, and returned the US to the forefront of space exploration." Bravo for Science. Bravo for this POTUS's administration championing this. Bravo for us as a Nation (regardless of ideological stripe)... Oh... & btw, how the Dem's (under Pelosi's rule) would seek to squelch the entrepreneurial spirit of free markets ~ well that day hasn't dawned... Nor should it Ever!!! https://thefederalist.com/2020/06/01/americas-return-to-space-proves-the-success-of-privatization/
A lil surprised commander bone spurs wasn't on that Falcon 9 rocket. Trying to escape his disastrous presidency...
So by example, ~ we should send up Barrack Houssein Obummer into Orbit... ? (that I might buy into)... LOL (Not even remotely being serious here... no SS at my house please)
I must give credit where credit is due. Obama did allow for this to come to fruition and for that, I do applaud him on, as this event is HUGE for our society!
So it is spun... every 'laudable' event is attributed to the Dem. POTUS predecessor... 'even posthumously' (none of the foibles bespoken...) So it is spun... every 'foible' of the GOP POTUS is an 'excuse' or "insurance policy" against Democratic failings, every success (U get the drift)... - We all know the 'game' & the "gamesmanship" involved... ROTFL Good launch! (We are all proud)
NASA has always been about private contractors who develop the equipment and software and engineering and came up with the various proposals as to how to get a man to the moon and back and NASA picked from those.
Has NASA been privatised? Who manufactured the Space Shuttle? Doesn't this actually prove the ongoing success of a mixed-market of state organisations working with private contractors?
I am happy as all STUFF that we can finally stop paying the Evil Empire aka Russia to get into space. I am an ardent believer that humans need to get out and colonize other planets and far away solar systems. The success of such ventures will be a combination of private development and government. We will need a military force to defend our push to the Stars. So private action alone, though important is not sufficient. If you study history you will see that the British colonized almost the entire world using private and semi private ventures. There was the British East India Company, the Hudson Bay Company and others. The Dutch were also players but at a small scale compared to the Brits.
Wow, packed full... I'm enjoying the enthusiasm! (though I might have an issue with private enterprise being summarily eclipsed by "military force") Oh, yehh a couple of other issues that might be problematic... (Great post otherwise... lol).
Actually the government did quite well with the space program. Then Obama told NASA to forget about space and go mend fences with the Muslims. This opened the door for the private entry......... which has proved very successful.
Trump has no desire to "escape" his presidency, as opposed to the leftist Democrat coup effort who would remove him on a rocketship or any other way they think they could get away with.
How stupid a statement, the development of the private and international space program with NASA has been in the works since the space shuttles were grounded due to age. Private industry for space travel is paid by the US govt. This POTUS has done no more than the previous president on space travel...
Now, the work is more free-range: NASA encourages companies to build their own rockets and spacecraft, provides them a portion of their R&D financing, and then operates more as a customer, buying back the services of the resulting hardware. The most promising example of that business model may be the crew vehicles being built by both SpaceX and Boeing, which will soon begin carrying astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). NASA awarded the companies the contracts in 2014, and backed the work with more than $6 billion in development funding. Boeing and SpaceX, meantime, will get paid for the rides they eventually provide and come away with their own fleet of spacecraft they can continue building and marketing to other customers. https://time.com/5639998/nasa-moon-commercial/
What I would like to see as the next step is developing a better way to get into Space. The design goals would be daily launches, reduced per launch costs, increased safety and power emissions. That's going to cost, and it's beyond the ability of any business. After we get it done, we may want to hand the technology over to the private sector.
You should read the history of the space program and how NASA was just the administrator it was the private contractors who developed the how and the equipment to do it.
Private space travel, makes potentially one man, make decisions that involve many lives. I think Elon Musk is just short of nutz. If he runs short of money, he is liable to make rash decisions. Done by committee, it is likely safer, but not as nimble. There are tradeoffs.
Space business grows steadily, projects to deal with asteroids need attention, and we should be doing more science in Space. We wouldn't have to launch daily, but having the option would position us to be ready for the next phase.
Why do we need people in low earth orbit to do any of those things? Name me the last three science breakthroughs we gained from having people in low earth orbit? You said the goal should be daily launches into space, what for?
