You realize that the Falcon Project was started back in 2008 and was supported by contracts with NASA all through the Obama years, right? You don't think this suddenly appeared the day Trump got into office, right? Cause that would be incredibly laughable if you did.
Bull crap. Space X and the Falcon Rocket program has been a NASA/private business partnership since it's beginning back in 2008. Without NASA backing and shared launch facilities, Space X would just be a dream - and the partnership was supported through the entire Obama Presidency. Go sell your "Trump is god," crap somewhere else - preferably where where people are too stupid to understand history.
Actually the Shuttle accomplished a lot, Hubbell would be useless, no ISS. Sure it was far to complicated and the idea of it far ahead of technology, which made it vulnerable and extremely expensive to fly. But it worked actually rather good. The idea is not dead, the Air Force has one and there is a rather little known company with a NASA contract, which builds the Dream Catcher, it will fly next year. The problem with the Shuttle, it was a 1 time project, with 70s tech and no further development was done. There was just a model A
U do "realize" that Obama ('largelyl') de-funded NASA & 'poo poo'd' any endeavor of our Gov. getting involved (in a host of other 'poo poo'ed acquisitions with private enterprise involving 'SPACE'... Another example of 'attempts' at crediting former DEM politicians (POTUS no less) with current REPUB actions... (current POTUS no less)... imho, of course
The difference with commercial programs, NASA gives a fixed amount of seed money and the privates than develop and built the equipment. Any cost overrun is the privates problem, they have full ownership of the equipment. Before NASA would pay for any cost overrun, but had full ownership. Take Boeing and the Starliner, they screwed up and badly failed with their first test flight. They will have to carry the cost to fix it, plus the cost of the second test flight and so on and so on. Before, NASA would pay for all of it
Hyuuuuuuge!!!!!!!! Very sad on ABC, CBS this morning. Totally unexpectedly and to the consternation of the experts, unemployment drops to 13.3% and the economy adds 2.5 million JOBS!!!!! Archie Bell and the Drells reuinte to play do the open up!!!!!!!
Obama defunded the rather questionable super heavy lifter from the Bush area. That is a pork, which is loved in Rep States, like Texas and Alabama. He actually wanted to cancel it. But the Republicans in Congress threatened to defund the commercial program, which Obama championed. As a compromise the Bush area program was reinstated and is now the Artemis Program, which is black hole for billions of Dollar. If that program would have been run under a commercial contract, it would have been flying already. But than the pork would not go to those Southern States and the usual defense contractors
Link or we should take yer word for it? The space policy of the Barack Obama administration was announced by U.S. President Barack Obama on April 15, 2010, at a major space policy speech at Kennedy Space Center.[1] He committed to increasing NASA funding by $6 billion over five years and completing the design of a new heavy-lift launch vehicle by 2015 and to begin construction thereafter. He also predicted a U.S.-crewed orbital Mars mission by the mid-2030s, preceded by the Asteroid Redirect Mission by 2025. In response to concerns over job losses, Obama promised a $40 million effort to help Space Coast workers affected by the cancellation of the Space Shuttle program and Constellation program. The Obama administration's space policy was made subsequent to the final report of the Review of United States Human Space Flight Plans Committee, which it had instituted to review the human spaceflight plans of the United States in the post-Space Shuttle era. The NASA Authorization Act of 2010, passed on October 11, 2010, enacted many of the Obama administration's space policy goals. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_policy_of_the_Barack_Obama_administration

Which again begs the question other than "to just go there" what is the purpose of sending humans to Mars or Europa that could not be done by robots? People always try to deflect to the early explorers here on earth but most of them knew what they were after and what they were doing to bring back, even Columbus knew he was going to India by another route to bring various commodities. And settlers came because they knew there was an ABUNDANCE of readily acquired resources on which to survive and prosper. Mars is a barren desolate planet very hostile to human life, VERY expensive to get to even with robots let alone all the survival equipment humans would require and humans require a way to get back. What is the payoff for humans?
How much did it cost to repair Hubble compared to have sent a properly constructed telescope up there? What has ISS accomplished? What were the 3 greatest discoveries, scientific, medical whatever from ISS last year, last 5 years? Could these have been made without humans up there? Shuttle was way too expensive and way too dangerous. Hey I was all about manned space flight in the 1960's and 70's and even into the 80's but we seem to have hit a brick wall and what exactly are we doing up there. And the whole let's send humans to Mar simply because we can makes no sense when that money could be used for more productive projects.
Yes lifting things into space, even LEO, is extremely expensive as is getting it back to earth. And again could it be done without the humans up there. Some of those experiments with micro-gravity production of those ceramics have been done in parabolic flights here on earth.
Fair amount of truth here, I admit. Maybe it was inferred but I never said Obama did away with NASA -- their space programs or their other science endeavors. I'll pass on the idle inane rants.
SpaceX was founded in 2002. They started early work on the Falcon 9 in 2005. They received funding from NASA in 2006. While your point about it not just springing into existence during President Trump's administration is valid, you've got some of the dates wrong. President Bush probably deserves more credit for shepherding SpaceX along than Obama does. NASA did give another big financial infusion to SpaceX in 2008 with the award of the Commercial Resupply Services contract, but again, that was during the Bush presidency, not Obama's.
Correct, NASA does not own the equipment, it pays SpaceX for resupply flights, it pays for hauling Astronauts to the ISS. That way NASA saves a ton of money, which it can use for science missions.
Replacing Hubble would have cost about 2 billion USD and would have taken about 6-10 years. Fixing it was around 300 million and was done in a year, a second mission upgraded and repaired Hubble, some of the gyros had failed and extend the livespan for more than a decade. Which is worth billions. You can go to NASA.gov and check out the science which has been done on the ISS. If it were worthless why would Japan be such a large contributor and have regularly Astronauts on the Station. They are not known for wasting money.
SpaceX got 2.5 billion for the Crew Dragon program, seed money, Boeing over 5 Billion. Compare that to Aurora, its pocket change.
Jesus christ, trump had nothing to do with it. Thanks to liberal nerds to make it all possible!!! We nerds are the science you reject and WE change the world. You just talk about it. And I can't believe you needed to be told that privatization would make space more affordable. This is common knowledge to all of us nerds and has been for decades.
That was Nixon. He killed the funding, but the team finished building it on their own. They weren't able to do testing. I wonder if we would have had this amazing renaissance in astronomy if they hadn't worked day and night before the lights got turned off?
