Well in my example above our drunk brother. If that rifle was locked he couldn't have done that. I am reminded of how many American families must go through this with loaded handguns in the house. There's always the heart warming (!) story of someone pulling a gun on an intruder and potentially saving their life. But on the other hand, 114,000 people were shot last year - and not many of these were intruders.
Shall not be infringed. Is that what a five year old says when he or she grabs hold of that loaded firearm, just lying there on a table? Shall not be infringed. That's what a drunk man says when he grabs that gun during an argument with his family. Shall not be infringed is what a thief says when he makes off your Glock and ammunition? Do you consider a safety latch an infringement on your liberties? See how this "infringement of liberties" philosophy is taking America to the point where every man, woman and child have Coronavirus - so if you are not one of the 114,000 shot then you WILL be a Corona statistic. All while the rest of us look on in amazement.
Nah... he didn't shoot anyone. We drove off the farm with the car lights off. We had nightmares of bullets tearing through that Subaru. This still comes to mind when I read of domestic shooting statistics in USA. Been there, done that.
Firearms ownership is a constitutional right. Operation of a motor vehicle on a public right of way is a privilege granted by government. The two standards are simply not comparable to one another. It is not so much a matter of comparing apples to oranges, more accurately it is a matter of comparing apples to cinder blocks. One may as well be asking why government cannot legally require all individuals to submit to forcibly implantation of contraceptive devices, to insure that only those who seek government permission are allowed to have offspring.
Such already exists in the united states. It is already, and has been for many decades, a very serious crime for any private individual to recklessly discharge a firearm in any manner that causes harm or death to others.
Just drunk. Some people are aggressive when drunk. Imagine aggressive drunks in a nation with 400 million guns just lying around - not even under separate lock and keys.
